These earrings are beautiful and remind me of snowflakes - I think I'll wear them a lot during the holidays!

Eleanor "Shining Bright" Hoop Earrings - Retail Value $125

Cate & Chloe Jewelry Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Earrings

I don't usually wear hoops, but these mini-hoops work for me!

Verdict: I think this was a great box in terms of value (I love it when they include a bonus item), but I think it would have been even better if there were a bracelet or necklace in the group of items to get a little more variety. As far as the packaing changes go - I think the jewelry boxes look even better than the ones they used to send with the sticker on them, and I was expecting them to go from 2 packages down to 1 package a month - with shipping costs it just didn't make sense to not send everything at once!

Do you subscribe to Cate & Chloe? What do you think of the subscription?

I’ve recently researched this. USPS labels nail polish as an item that’s “mailable but has specific restrictions”:

https://www.usps.com/ship/can-you-ship-it.htm?showtab=2

The eBay community forums have a good discussion of this:

http://community.ebay.com/t5/Shipping-Returns/How-to-ship-nail-polish-usps/td-p/21358556

—-

The package should be clearly labeled “ORM-D” and “SURFACE MAIL ONLY” – you can search Google Images for free sticker printables online.

USPS “Parcel Select Nonpresort” postage (surface / ground mail) can be purchased online if you have Paypal – this article explains the label purchase process in more detail:

http://travelwithgrant.com/ebay-amazon-tips/print-usps-and-ups-shipping-labels-from-your-paypal-account/

The direct link to purchase the label is here:

https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now

“Parcel Select Nonpresort” is an available choice from the “Shipment Information” pull-down at the PayPal link above.

Via Stamps.com:

Does Parcel Select include free Delivery Confirmation?

Yes, Parcel Select includes free Delivery Confirmation. Tracking can be viewed using the USPS Track & Confirm website.

Parcel Select – Nonpresort: Service is available online through PC Postage vendors. There are no minimum package numbers needed and labels do not need to be pre-sorted.

Can I hand my Parcel Select package to my mail carrier?

Yes, as long as your Parcel Select package has pre-paid postage from a PC Postage vendor, you may hand the package to your daily mail carrier.

Can I drop off my Parcel Select package at the Post Office?

Yes, you may drop off any Parcel Select package on the Post Office desk without waiting in line as long as your package contains pre-paid postage from a PC Postage vendor.

Thank you for the links …. I just spoke to a clerk at another post office I go to, and that person was saying that standard ground mail has to be at least 1 pound. – So that eliminates mailing off 1 nail polish by itself. – 2 nail polishes might go over the limit one can mail in a box on that type of stuff. – So for now I’m skipping mailng nail polishes.

Liz: —– Sorta on the topic, sorta off the topic …….. I was told by my post office today that nail polish can not be mailed using USPS. So it can not be mailed first class, stardard, or priority mail. It can not be mailed off at all 🙁 – Which makes sense, because every time I’ve gotten items from companies with nail polish in it, it is normally via DHL. So I’ll be removing nail polish from my swaps. — Sometimes what can be mailed and what can not is so confusing. And I do not want to try and figure out how to use DHL if that is even possible to mail off nail polish. — Time to find a nail polish craft project — Ughhh.

I always get my Julep and Square Hue boxes in the US mail. I noticed the Square Hue box this month had a sentence saying it complied with a certain regulation on the front of the box. (Maybe it did before too but I never noticed?) I THINK this was the citation if I remember correctly but I no longer have the box: 49 CFR 173.4.

The nail polish thing has become so confusing, one post office i go to says it is okay via standard ground mail only, it can not go 1st class or priority ( that would be air mail ) so that makes sense. The other post office i go to says they can not mail it off at all via any method. – I have noticed a lot of the companies that ship nail polish use dhl to transfer it to the post office to have them deliver it once it is at the exact post office they deliver the product from ——- So if I get nail polishes in boxes right now, I’ll be giving them as gifts, donating them, or crafting with them

If I sign up now, what are the chances I could receive exactly the same August box as this?
Every piece is just what I’d pick for myself, I’d love to get it!

I would contact Cate and Chloe customer service and see what they say.

During the time I subscribed, I never got the same pieces as Liz. So I think there is considerable variation (I did have a “no earrings” request on file).

Erin

I hate to say this but after seeing quite a few CS issues not being appropriately or timely resolved without hassle to the subscriber, I’m relieved my mom’s 3 month sub ended this month. She got a great variety over the subscription period, necklaces, rings, a bracelet and earrings, in her choice of metals. She even requested a specific piece and received it. The first month they sent her an extra bonus pair of earrings and let her keep them (which she generously gave to me), so she received 4 pieces in June.

I expected the shipping model to change. They were using a delayed shipment system that couldn’t have been as cost effective as a single monthly shipment. I know that dual shipping aspect was part of their business model but it’s not make or break for most people. My frustration with the change stems from a complete lack of notice to subscribers that they were changing to once/month (all correspondence for the gift sub comes to me). That’s never a good thing and only invited more inquiries from those thinking they missed a delivery.

Sneaky Burrito

There was a note in my last box that they were changing over to a one-box-per-month model.

I had CS issues resolved easily; when I wanted to cancel, I heard back from them in a reasonable amount of time and I haven’t seen any unexpected charges on my card.

I mostly quit because I was getting too many similar sorts of items.

Has anyone else that bought more than one month of the Living Social deal, had any issues applying it to your account? In the beginning of the sale it wasn’t limited to one per person or to new customers only (you could choose to buy 1-10 vouchers). I emailed them after purchasing to get them applied to my account. Shortly after I emailed them they changed the terms of the sale (to one per person and new customers only). Now I’m fighting with them to try and get them to honor the vouchers. I’ve been subscribing for several months and love my subscription but am so upset over this. I’m just wondering if anyone else is having issues. (Plus my box this month was missing one item! Only the bonus earrings and another set of earrings were included)

Erin

I’ve had very good CS interactions (I bought a 3 month sub for my Mom). I can tell you for certain that legally (I’m a federal attorney/judge) they are bound to honor the terms of service in existence at the time you purchased the vouchers. Regardless of a later change in terms limiting the vouchers to one per person and/or new subscribers, they can’t apply the new terms retroactively. If they do, they are opening themselves up to FTC investigation for fraud and BBB complaints. How the cost impact to C&C is handled in terms of claimed undercharges (I’m assuming C&C is unhappy with so many using multiple LS vouchers) should be between LS and C&C – not the customer (nor their expense and hassle).

Worst case scenario is to demand a refund for unusable vouchers from LS. If their vendor isn’t complying with terms of sale and service they are on the hook as they accepted payment and facilitated the transaction. So you have that option should C&C refuse to follow the law regarding applicable point of sale terms of use.

Hi Erin,
Thank you for that information. I will definitely mention that in my next communication with them. They did suggest that I get a refund from Living Social. However LS has the deal where if you refer 3 friends that buy the deal you get the deal for free. Since I had been loving my sub I told a bunch of friends about it and referred 9+ people. So I ended up earning the deal for free by referring so many people. I couldn’t then get another refund, without losing out on the referrals (does that make sense?). I had really hoped that they would be decent about it (especially as I referred so many others). I have 6 one month vouchers and they’re still refusing to honor them all.

**and for anyone that decides to subscribe, make sure you give them the name of a current subscriber as a referral. You’ll both get 10% off of your sub for as long as keep it. Feel free to use my name (Lisa Dion) if you’d like 🙂

I also signed up with the Living Social deal – and then re-upped with the $19 offer we received. I have been SO happy with them. Right after I signed up, I sent CS an e-mail to add to my profile that said I did not like gold jewelry, or “chunky” jewelry, and preferred smaller, more classic looking pieces. I linked 5 items from the site that I loved – and 5 items from the site that weren’t my style at all. They were so helpful in their reply and even wrote back to check my ring size since one of the items I put on my “like” list was a ring. And this month I got that ring (Anne “Graceful” ring) and the Alice “Noble” necklace. Perfect for my style – they nailed it!

This is my second month with C&C. I purchased this month with the special that was offered in the LS box. I filled out the style survey, placed a few items on my wish list, and also filled out the section that asked which piece I liked the best (or something similar to that). I also emailed CS to let them know that I do not wear earrings and had my account marked as such. They were happy to help me with that.

I received the Simone “Sweet” Bangle which is a pretty silver bangle and Laurel “Nature” Leaf Necklace which is the item that I placed on my wishlist and marked as wanting on the survey. I also received the Perk of the Month which is the same as what Liz has listed.

I’m pleased with my selection and look forward to next month’s selection.

I’m glad you’re liking your C&C… I can’t say the same. I’m going to unsub.
The main thing I hate is the absolutely ridiculous prices they claim their cheap jewelry is worth. It’s all CZ & silver plate…. do they really expect us to believe it’s worth hundreds? I’m fine with them sending me, say, $50 worth of costume jewelry for $40, but don’t try to pretend it’s $200 worth!!!
I also hate that so many pieces are similar. I’ve received 5 items: 2 CZ pendants, 2 CZ earrings, and the interlocking rings ring (which I do like, though it too is quite cheaply made).
And their billing/shipping is very confusing. I thought they owed me 2 more items, I called the ‘VIP’ number numerous times (no response) and I finally got an answer via email. They do NOT owe me 2 more items, I was confused because of how far in advance they bill.
All in all, I’m super unimpressed.

I totally agree w/Brooke that the “list pricing” on their web site is ridiculous and off-putting, but I just try to ignore that. I am really liking the quality of the pieces for the price I’ve paid so far, and that’s what is important to me. I got the Hayley “Hero” Necklace, the Simone “Sweet” Bangle, and the bonus Crisscross earrings (which are in Liz’s picture) this month. Very happy! I did ask them not to send me earrings as part of my sub (due to allergy), but if they are a bonus, I certainly will not complain!

I was very happy with the items that I received this month. I got the criss cross earrings, the Diana “Divine” earrings, and the Zoe “Life” interlocking rings. I’m very pleased with this subscription!

I signed up with the LS deal thinking I’d only do that month (got a CZ pendant which I wear all the time, including right now, and CZ post earrings which seem a bit too big for my ears). Of course they sent a $19.99 offer with the LS box and I had to do ONE more month and I LOVE the pieces! I got beautiful drop earrings w a sprinkling of CZ in them and a super lightweight silver bangle – both of which I’m wearing today (I haven’t tried on the bonus earrings yet, but I’m not that into posts). I didn’t realize I could email them with my preferences, they might have gotten me for one more month 🙂

I’ve been wanting to try this company for months now. I even contacted them after the last review you did (that I saw) of theirs. They told me to wait as you’d have a coupon code that week, and I haven’t seen anything again until now lol. Do they allow you to pick your preferences like other companies? Could you get the items shipped to different locations since they come twice a month? I’m curious because, as far as preferences, this would’ve been the worst box for me as I don’t wear earrings at all. Sure, it’s great there were bonus items, but everything in the box were earrings. That’s not a enough of a variety for me to want to join this month, especially if the whole box/every item would be something I wouldn’t wear. They are cute though.

PA Anna

I started my Cate & Chloe subscription with the LS deal followed by the special that was offered for the following month. I specified no earrings and explained that I do not have pierced ears. They have been wonderful in understanding that and have not sent earrings except for the perk of the month which was a separate piece from the 2 regular pieces. I’m pleased with this.

I cancelled last month after 2 or 3 months. I was unimpressed with their confusing billing cycle and how it related to their shipping (I would be charged, get one shipment, be charged again before getting the second shipment). I still think they owe me a shipment, but was too tired of debating it with them.

I also said no gold & no bracelets. My last shipment was a gold bracelet, so that was the last straw for me.

The updated shipping with both items makes more sense. I may have to try again, and hope I don’t get all of the same thing, like you did.

This was my first month after the living social deal. I’ve been pretty impressed. I saw that several people weren’t happy with getting CZ jewelry in their first box. I was very specific in my survey about wanting more every day jewelry and requested to not receive a lot of CZ pieces. So far I haven’t gotten any. They’ve also been good about pulling items from my wish list for my box.

Sneaky Burrito

If I hadn’t dropped my subscription, my box would’ve been totally different as I had a “no earrings” preference set (can’t wear anything but titanium unless I want my ears to turn black…).

I liked the stuff I got, but it was kind of similar — in 3 months I got 3 CZ pendants. Anyway, had to quit due to financial issues and am not really missing it.
