Ipsy Review – August 2014

Ipsy Review - August

Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to build out your makeup collection on the cheap!

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

Ipsy Review - August 2014 First Look

The Subscription Box: Ipsy

The Cost: $10 a month (free shipping)

The Products: Full size and samples of makeup and beauty products. (Plus a makeup bag!)

Ships to: US and Canada

Check out all of my Ipsy reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Visit the Ipsy Swap Page to swap for any of the items you see in this review!

Ipsy Review - August 2014 Items

At first look it was somewhat surprising to not see larger items! (I'm used to lots of full size items from Ipsy!)

Ipsy Review - August 2014 Eyeshadow Quad

Manna Kadar Sheer Glo Shimmer Lotion - 8 ml Value $7.80

Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Balm - FULL SIZE! Value $5.50

Coast Scents Sampler Quad - Value $2?

(This little eyeshadow quad is so tiny I used a quarter to show scale). I've sampled all these products before and the Jersey Shore Sun lip balm is my favorite - I love that it's all organic!

Ipsy Review - August 2014 Urban Decay

Cali Cosmetics Body Creme with Volcanic Minerals & Sicilian Lemons - 1 oz Value $4

Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil in Plushie - .03 oz Value $15

This Body Creme is from a brand that's new to me, and I'm a fan! (Natural citrus is one of my favorite scents for lotions, and this one is very refreshing and lightweight).

I've sampled Urban Decay's 24/7 liners before and they are amazing. They go on smooth and don't budge. I also never need to buy full-size versions because the samples are practically full-sized. This Plushie color is a pretty bright purple for me though, I would have preferred a darker plum shade.

From what I can tell on Instagram, everyone either got an Urban Decay liner sample, or a Perversion mascara sample. I really wanted to try the mascara so I'll probably end up swapping for it!

Verdict: I paid $10 for my Ipsy glam bag, and I received about $34 worth of products. The value is good, I think I'll use everything, I just wasn't super wowed by the bag this month. (I think that's in part because I subscribe to a ton of boxes so I get a lot of duplicates).

What did you get in your Glam Bag this month?

Well, I’ve ALWAYS loved IPSY but this month they REALLY let me down!!! When I opened the mailer it was OVER……..ALL of the products were in the mailer ~ my IPSY BAG was like an after thought and was all smashed up and jammed in the mailer!!! The products were embarrassing and I too am giving them one……possibly two more months to get there “BAG” together or I will cancel!!! Signed up for the new French Box…….hoping it is a winner! Also having thoughts of quitting PopSugar…..but that scarf was too good to pass on this month. Hated BB and quit them. ……Boxycharm and Glossy Box just got the axe too. Julep is next (I only have ten fingers!!!! TOOO much polish!!) Keeping ELF….they are TOPS with me. Wantable also hit the road a couple months ago. Thinking of giving Sample Society a try ~ anyone want to give me few good reasons to take the plunge??? Thanks Liz for ALL you do to keep us in the know about the beauty box world ~ YOU got me hooked!!!! 🙂

Have you tried Petit Vour? It is $15 a month and I’ve found them to be always wonderful, and full of interesting products. Eco Emi has a new box out with full size products. – I’m also trying the French Box, and YogiSurprise. – I canceled Julep, Ipsy, Blush Mystery Box. As far as beauty boxes I’ve been sticking to MeMe boxes. I’ve found the value good and they are fun and interesting.

– The reason for some of my box cancelations including ipsy, has been because I’ve been borde with them. – I liked Julep yet budget wise it did not make sense, since I polish my nails once every 2 weeks and use cutical oil between them. Ipsy is great, yet not liking most the FB stuff including getting off the wait list, plus hated my last 2 bags … For me a box has to have value, and be different.

I wasn’t too impressed for my first month. The mascara doesn’t do much for me. I do like the Dr. Brandt Pores no more, It works great. I’m a sucker for lip balms too! 🙂 The tiny blush and eye liner I haven’t even tried.

I’m not terribly dissatisfied but not exciting as much as my other boxes. I’m not wowed yet! I like the idea of receiving a new cosmetic pouch each month and discovering new items.
I was just on the waiting list a time and really expected more! I’ll give Ipsy a few months to see if it’s right for me. I cancelled Birchbox after this month. I’m hanging on to my full size cosmetic boxes as the value is there and I seem to love the items. Plus I’m hanging on to Beauty Box 5 because last month was great. I’m also joining in on Sample Society, starting with the September box. I’m exited about that.

Sounds like there was a mass exodus away from Ipsy this month. I cancelled too – I’d been talking about cancelling for 6 months and after getting some terrible selections in my August bag, I’m done! I’ve also cancelled Birchbox, BeautyBox 5, and Beauty Army (I never got all 4 at the same time, but have gone back and forth between all with Ipsy as a constant for the last 2 years). Right now, I’m happy with Sample Society and Bijoux Box, and am toying with the idea of ditching PopSugar but can’t seem to let go yet!

This month’s Ipsy bag was a shock. It’s was so awful!
I got: coastal scents el teeny and el cheapo eyeshadow, a sample of dry shampoo, a plain lip balm, and some tiny tube of manna sheer glo shimmer lotion, and the tiny tube of perversion mascara. This is how I feel about this: I could have taken $10 and done better at Dollar Tree. Seriously smh. And it arrived yesterday! 8/18/14. It took them two weeks to ship that? It was listed as “shipped” for two weeks. Also, there’s NO products available for Ipsy point redemption right now. None. It doesn’t matter how many points you have; it’s likely they will “expire” before you can spend them. I’m so over this bag…looking for something else.

Did you notice the new French Box Liz posted about today? It sounds great. First box is on special for $14. – I canceled my ipsy sub this morning ( I did not like the August box either ) so I’m going to try the new french box instead. – I like Ipsy, yet after 3 soso months and after that long wait list, it is time to try something new.

This was my first Ipsy Glam Bag, and I’m neither impressed nor dissatisfied. I love the Urban Decay Perversion mascara–definitely one I will be purchasing a full sized tube of. I also love the Dr. Brandt Pore Refiner. The tube isn’t too small, either, so I can get some good use out of it. The JCat eyeshadow isn’t too bad, I just wish it was a bit more pigmented. I also thought the dry shampoo was great. It soaks up a lot more oil than I was expecting it to (I’m on day 3 hair right now, and it looks like I just washed it because of the dry shampoo), but the thing that just annoys me is the Mongongo lip balm. My EOS lip balms work so much better and it has a funny scent–like a mix of animal crackers and lemon meringue pie. The bag, as well, was pretty cheap. It smelled like a beachball and I don’t like the color orange. I am going to use it as a pencil pouch for the new school year, though. I am going to give Ipsy a few more months though. If the next few bags are as impressive or more, I will keep it. I also got Birchbox for the first time, and I wasn’t impressed at all. I canceled right away.

Got the same bag and I love it (including the bag) 😀

Stephanie

I got the Mongongo lip balm too and was pleasantly surprised. It is one of the better lip balms I have tried recently.

Kelly

I wasn’t initially wowed by my ipsy bag when I saw it online but I’ve really been happy with it since I got it. I got the same lip balm as you– I’m a lip balm addict and I’m pretty obsessed with this one already. I also got the UD Perversion sample, Jcat eyeshadow, dry shampoo, and Dr. Brandt primer. I was pretty pleased with the value from this month but that Coastal Scents palette does look pretty tiny :/

Finally was able to redeem my IPSY points, so I am waiting for my September bag & if it isn’t better…I will cancel. I cancelled with GB earlier last month & signed up with Sample Society since the revamp has looked amazing. I used to be Team Ipsy all day but this bag was just sad!

Brandy

I agree and what I don’t think was fair… It is hard to earn points and they had a surprise makeup bag costing 1500 points with one of there best selling previous bags.
They sold out immediately also but most people have points to expire before being able to purchase anything. At least with Birchbox there point system is awesome! I’m glad that you were at least able to redeem your points. 🙂

First month with Ipsy and not wowed but I do feel that I received my $10 worth. The samples were so tiny.

I’m joining sample society this month and debating glossy box. I cant turn down Sample Society there first spoiler of an $85 full size eye cream. Plus I’ve been wanting to join and it’s $15.

I already have birchbox, ipsy, beauty box 5, boxycharm and Blush Beauty Mystery Box.

Boxycharm and Blush beauty mystery box are definitely my favs! Full sizes for $21 for BoxychArm and $24.95 for Blush. The only wow factor boxes.

I’ll be at around $96-97 a month when I join sample society (6 boxes total) and I really don’t wanna top $100. There starting to all add up. Lol. I’m now an addict!

Oh not counting I did get one quarterly box of Fab Fit Fun Summer box because of the coupon and I really want the New Beauty Test Tube super bad. Ah..

I do not see myself every dropping boxycharm or blush beauty mystery box!

I haven’t even gotten my Ipsy bag yet this month and I already cancelled my subscription. Last month was okay but this month was crap and I wanted to try Birchbox instead. From what I have seen, a lot of people prefer Ipsy to Birchbox but I just wasn’t loving it.

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

This was my fIrst box and I was not too impressed, I thought I complained a lot about birchbox having small samples and too much shampoo and conditioner but for my first box Birchbox won. I like the idea of getting a cosmetic bag and makeup each month though.

I received a tiny sample of Coastal Scents blush and a tiny Lord and Berry eye pencil. I did get the mascara by UD and Dr Brandt. Pores no more as well as full size absolute lip balm in grape.

I wanted the Glamglow and purple UD eye liner. The mascara is not all the hype. It works like my drug store mascara. Not impressed. They also had a choice to receive a full size eye shadow but i did not receive that either.

I’m hoping they go back to the other cosmetic bags. This is cute for my age 29 but cheaply made and bad for shipping. Did anyone notice the smell of plastic?

Anyway I am fairly satisfied with 3/5 items. The other two are just too tiny. I will try Ipsy two mOre months and see how things go.

Reply ButtonReply

Toni

My husband said that the bag smelled like a beach ball and I think that’s the prefect description. This was my sixth bag with Ipsy and it was a bit of a bummer. I also got the mascara and I certainly have drugstore mascaras that work better.

In the picture I’m adding, the left side is the UD Perversion and the right side is the Revlon Bold Lacquer by Grow Luscious. With one coat each, I think the Revlon made my lashes look longer and separated them a bit more.

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

Hi Toni,

Yes looking at the picture the Revlon looks better and they have great mascara. I have that exact one from a sub box and I totally agree. Yes the bag does smell like a beach ball. Perfectly! Lol!

When I tried the mascara I wasn’t impressed. Online it gets about 3 stars used alone and more stars used with the UD lash primer. I don’t own a lash primer.

I’m hoping for a great Sep box because from what I’ve read this used to be a great subscription. Now so many people are joining but what they don’t understand is that I’ve seen many people cancel recently.

I will decide by seeing the next two boxes if I will keep ipsy or just cancel. I do wish that everyone received the Glam Glow. I really wanna try it but oh well one day my subs will have it (hopefully 🙂

Anna

It looks like a lot of people share my feelings about Ipsy. I have gotten 2 bags so far and both I was disappointed with! I like Birchbox better, which is surprising – on FB everybody writes how Ipsy is so much better then Birchbox! I feel opposite, for me Birchbox after writing reviews is only $5, and I got better samples so far then from Ipsy. Giving Ipsy 3 more months to impress me, otherwise I will cancel

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

I got the Jersey Shore Sun lip balm, the dry shampoo, the J Cat eyeshadow, blush and the UD eyeliner. This was my first Ipsy bag and I’m pretty on the fence about it. I feel like I got the $10 worth, but the only thing I was truly excited to try was the eyeliner and then I realized it was purple and not something I’d wear. I ended up swapping it for the mascara. Everything else I feel like is stuff I already have in my collection – I started subscribing to boxes to try new things. I mean, it’s stuff I’ll use but nothing is new or WOW’ed me. I’m going to give it a solid 3 months and then decide where to go from there.

My first BirchBox was also this month and it blew this out of the water which I was super surprised by because it seems like more people prefer this over that box.

So people DO actually get off the waitlist!? I’ve been on it since May!! If and when I do get on, I’ll probably give them 2-3 months to impress me. Right now I get Sample Society, Beauty Box 5, and GlossyBox in the way of straight up beauty product boxes- all of which I have been very pleased with. Plus I am giving Mirenesse products a try, so I’ll be getting their VIP Glamm Box as well. I also do stand alone purchases of the Blush Mystery Box and QVC Test Tube if the products intrigue me. So I am not sure I need another beauty box. Maybe I should just not even bother with Ipsy if the opportunity to get off the waitlist does arise??

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

I have been debating glossy box. Are the sizes decent? I know that I like the brands already.

I’m going for Sample Society now as the Sep spoiler won me over.

Canceling Birchbox after another month (probably) and maybe ipsy in a few months if things are the same.

Blush Beauty Mystery Box and Boxycharm are my favorites by far! Then Beauty Box 5 has been decent and full size for $12 a month. I do like them too.

I haven’t been impressed by Birchbox and ipsy. The samples are so tiny and some I don’t use including shampoo and conditioner.
I just enjoy the point system with BB.

Reply ButtonReply

Brandy

Dear Melissa,

I was on the wait list almost a month. I contacted ipsy telling them I liked there FB page, etc and don’t have Twitter and to please take me off the waitlist and was removed the next day.

My friend who joined 5-6 months ago stated she was on the list two weeks but this past few months ipsy is really growing! The average wait list is 2-4 months tops. It used to be shorter. I highly recommend you contacting ipsy via email like I did and you may just get taken off.

Vanessa

Hi Melissa! I have both Sample Society(revamped version) and Glossybox and I am thrilled with both!!! I also got the QVC test tube recently and loved the brands inside, specifically the kate somerville travel exfoliate. I recently cancelled IPSY. I really think it’s not worth it unless you have some kids to give the stuff you don’t want to. And, if you like the brands in those other subscriptions, you may not like the size and brands in IPSY. The most important thing is to make the right choice for what matters to you! For me, it’s brands, quality, and size!

I am so glad this was my last month. I cancelled my renewal after last month’s bag with the tanning oil (I’m black and had specified that I did not want any tanning products). I used to love ipsy but it was just getting progressively worse. And this month these samples and bag were so tiny! Ugh. I had already cancelled my birchbox (but kept the boyfriend’s.) because of tiny samples.

I think Julep might be next to get the ax, only because I have way too much nail polish. For now, it looks like the only beauty box I’ll be getting is (occassional) Memebox since I have a couple friends at work who are happy to take the makeup that won’t work for me.

Oh well. Thank goodness there is always a new box out there to try!

Reply ButtonReply

lily

Have you tried Petit Vour – $15 a month, the products are all interesting and the values stay consistant. Another box I really like is Blush Mystery box. Great Values- I canceled Julep too, after I discovered Zoya. —

Reply ButtonReply

Deidra

I haven’t yet. But I think I’m going to hold off on anymore beauty boxes until I use up my hoard of products.

I used to work for Zoya, so I have plenty of their polishes and got them at a discount! 🙂

Erica O

Does Zoya have a subscription box?

Alecia

I got the Perversion mascara, green apple lip balm, Pores No More, a tiny blush sample and tiny eyeliner this month. I used to love Ipsy, but it bothers me when my bag value is barely $20 and other people receive something like glam glow that is a $19 sample. I wish that they would make the bags a little more equitable.

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

This was my first ever Ipsy bag and the only thing I’m excited about is the UD mascara. I’m going to give it another month, but I’m not optimistic.

Reply ButtonReply

Julia

I’m glad I’m done with this subscription. I should’ve done better research before wasting my money. This month’s makeup bag went straight in the trash. That chemical smell gives me migraines.

Reply ButtonReply

chantel

I agree with so many of the comments that have been made. I have been with ipsy for a year and a half, but each month seems to disappoint a little bit more. I liked the urban decay mascara and the no more pores, but my blush, eyeliner and green apple lip balm were nothing special.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

This was my first month of ipsy. I loved most of it. I received the UD perversion mascara, pores no more, J.cats eye shadow, dry shampoo and lip balm in orange ginger all of which I am really excited to try. I also received an orange bag, it was kinda childish and my daughter loved it for her play makeup

Reply ButtonReply

Kathryn

I got the exact same things and I was very happy as usual. Loved it all, especially the mascara and surprisingly the lip balm!

Reply ButtonReply

Violet

That was my bag. I loved it (even the bag) 😀

Reply ButtonReply

Brooke

I got the exact same bag that you did Liz! Not thrilled but not hating… I really like the UD eyeliner and I can never have enough lip balm or moisturizer.

I’m not thrilled with either ipsy or BB but I hang in there b/c they’re so cheap. (Also I have 2 teen sons with girlfriends and I give them all the products I don’t want.) I like Petit Vour but my favorite beauty sub is Sample Society!

Reply ButtonReply

lily

The past 2 months having ipsy after waiting about 3 months to get off the wait list have been disapointing. I dont like the tiny samples – Does anyone know if the Ipsy bag is canceled if it can be reinstated easily without a 2-3 month wait list?

Reply ButtonReply

Sneaky Burrito

Nope, you’re back on the waitlist if you cancel and sign up again. Unless they have one of the “skip the waitlist” events (usually involving Facebook posts) or you can get someone to sign up with your referral ID.

Reply ButtonReply

lily

Thank you for answering the question – – Not sure if I want to get back on the wait list for the ipsy bag, I know sometimes companies have a great bag after a bunch of not so good reviews. I’m hoping next month will be a better month.

Kathy

If this box had been halfway decent I would have continued my subscription, but it wasn’t so I didn’t. I have always dissed BB for their tiny samples, but this time Ipsy was the tiny sample winner. Aside from the awful colors, the blush is a joke, as is the liner, & I don’t think I’ll ever need another mascara. Said bye to both BB & Ipsy this month. Wonder where to spend my now freed up $20 a month.

Reply ButtonReply

Cindy

I signed up for Ipsy but too late for this months bag. I have to say I am glad after reading this thread. I hope next month is a great bag. I signed up for BB a couple months ago and was kind of shocked at how small the samples are.

Liz, you should definitely try the subversion and perversion duo! When I saw that they had a primer I had to go pick it up and try it with my perversion sample… It’s awesome!
