Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Tote

Golden Tote is one of my favorite monthly packages – and I think a good deal of my wardrobe is now from Golden Tote items!

If you aren’t familiar with Golden Tote, here’s a really quick intro: Every month you get to pick out 1-2 pieces, and they surprise you with the rest. (The surprise items are completely different from the pieces you pick from).

FYI – This is not a typical subscription, each month they release a new collection and you can decide whether or not you want to buy it. For returns it’s an all-or-nothing deal. You can return the entire tote for a refund, but you can’t return individual pieces.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Blue

Vintage Havana Bring on Spring Sweatshirt - Value $58

(47% Polyester, 47% Rayon, 6% Spandex)

This was one of my two picks for the $149 tote. I was planning on getting this sweatshirt in blue or white and then getting the black maxi as my other item, but the maxi sold out so quickly! So I kind of gave up a little and just decided to get the sweatshirt in both colors:

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 White

Vintage Havana Bring on Spring Sweatshirt - Value $58

Even though I wanted that maxi, I'm happy with both of these sweatshirts. The patterns are fun, and perfect for chilly summer nights. (Also great for air-conditioned indoors, etc. - I seem to always be cold so I think I will be wearing these a lot!)

The fabric is so soft and lightweight too. The only potential concern I have is how they will hold up going through the laundry multiple times. (The fabric is inverted so the super soft sweatshirt material is on the outside, and I'm worried it will turn into fuzzballs).

Now on to my surprise items:

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Maxi Skirt

Promesa Maxi Skirt - Value $40

(95% Rayon, 5% Spandex)

This material is thin, slinky and very comfortable. Fortunately since the print is pretty busy I don't think the fact that it isn't lined will be an issue.

(FYI - on my style profile notes I asked for as many maxis as possible).

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Dress

Le Lis Tunic Dress - Value $45?

(100% Polyester)

This piece is too short to be a dress for me and a little too long and busy to be a tunic. It will be swapped! (It is well made though - I'm impressed with the embroidery detail on the top).

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Grey Maxi

Hem & Thread Grey Maxi - Value $45?

(92% Rayon, 8% Spandex)

This is my favorite surprise item in the box. It's made from the softest material ever, and I love that it's a great basic piece.

Golden Tote $149 Tote Review – April 2015 Green

Very J Top - Value $25?

(85% Polyester, 15% Cotton)

I was hoping this would be one of those pieces where I would say "it didn't look great on the mannequin, but it looked surprisingly good on me!" But no - it looked much worse on me! The color is draining on my skin tone, and the shape isn't flattering either. In an attempt to say something nice, I will admit that the fabric itself is lovely - it's almost like a lightweight linen.

Verdict: I'm pretty happy with this Golden Tote - I love my maxis and my two sweatshirts. I would pay $149 for those four items, so this is a break-even tote for me - not a home run. What do you think of my $149 tote? Which items did you pick this month? Were you able to get your picks before they sold out?

I sooo want to sign up for Golden Tote but I am nervous about it, especially with the maxi dresses. Do they sell shorter length clothing? I am 5’4 and I am afraid that those cute dresses would just drag on the ground.

You tell them what types of clothing you don’t want, maxi skirts and dresses are listed on there. Liz just really likes the maxi dresses so she gets them a lot (you should see her Stitch Fix reviews).

Liz, I love your maxis. I finally received my tote today and received a maxi, grey but different style than yours. I used your tip and commented I’d prefer more dresses, if possible. So, it worked. Thank you. My tote this month was great. I removed boho, and received better stuff. One of my chosen items was the coral dress but it’s too big. I also chose the sleeveless, shorter black dress and it’s adorable.

How do the sweatshirts fit? I wanted the navy one in large, but it sold out so I bought medium hoping its roomy.

Also, I still haven’t gotten my April tote or my late March tote – they really are getting slower with shipping. I wonder if the larges take longer than the smalls? The May spoilers are out already!

I can’t actually remember anymore what I ordered, its been so long, but I think I got what I wanted. April I waited until after noon because I had to work and I really am sick of the nightmare that starts at 9:00 a.m. PDT.

I ordered both a medium and a large because I wanted it to be oversized – the only difference I noticed was that the large was very, very slightly longer. You should be fine in the medium!

I got the sweatshirt in medium and still find it to be roomy!

I received my March restock large tote (restock was the Saturday before April totes came out) on Monday. I kinda liked my chosens–Barcelona pants and Chambray shirt, but only liked 1 out of 4 surprises. I learned that I probably should not pick the Boho style profile, because 2 of the ones I didn’t like seemed to fit that category. I think I just like Boho-lite or something. One was a tassel shirt (white with tan tassels), where the sleeves hit me between 3/4 and full (I have short arms), the other was a tank with embroidery on the straps that just hung very oddly on me. I also got the Key to my Heart print dress that was too small on everyone–too small on my hips, too, even though I have narrow hips! Kinda liked a geometric short-sleeve top I liked, but that was something I had requested!

Realized the Barcelona pants and Chambray top didn’t fit me as well as I’d originally thought and hadn’t had much interest in buyers for surprises, so I sent the tote back today.

I did end up ordering a small tote yesterday when the restocked the Perfect White Top–hopefully I’ll like that surprise better!

Definitely let us know how the washing of the sweatshirts go! This is always my biggest fear with every Golden Tote item.

The same thing happened to my sleep set from GT this Winter… wash it a few times and that softness is gone & the lint balls begin!

Thanks as always, Liz. <3

I also got the grey maxi and sleeveless top for surprises. I love the blue sleeveless top, but be warned about the grey maxi. I washed it in the machine on cold water and it shrunk up several inches. I did not put it in the dryer. It probably says to hand wash but sometimes I risk it, this time it didn’t work out.

I was able to get the black maxi and black batik dress for my chosens. It took a while though with all the website issues. Both items are amazing

Also, the May totes will be delayed by one weeks.

I picked the same two chosen items and also got the tank top but my other three surprises were way different. The sweatshirts are way cute but just don’t look that flattering on me they way they hang so sadly my whole tote will be going back. I also found it really disappointing that there was not a puella/priddy item this month. Those are always my favorite and their was no chosen item or surprise item in the brand. I wonder if they are no longer doing that?

I would love a maxi. The problem is that I would have to hem it, I’m only 5 foot tall, all the ones I have found are designed for women much taller.

Liz,

Maybe try washing the sweatshirts inside-out to avoid fuzzballs?

Whenever I have something that I want to avoid fading/friction when washing, I wash it inside out. It seems to help although I suppose it could all be in my head. Good luck!

I’m also curious about whether or not the sweaters will be easily prone to fuzz balls. If anyone has dealt with this material before, I’d love some pointers!

I recently returned a top I bought online ‘cos it was this same material and I didn’t want to deal with it. );

Everytime I see another Liz’s GT review, I wonder how many maxis do you actually own! LOL

Britney

Haha! Good to know I’m not the only one! I have quite a few maxis myself, they’re appropriate for (almost) every occasion and so comfortable!

Too many and yet never enough! 🙂
