Darby Smart To DIY For Subscription Box Review October 2015 - project

This month's project is a DIY Tricks for Treats Box! I wasn't that interested in the Halloween aspect of this project because I really needed a little box like this to use year-round. BUT, I was THRILLED to finally get the chance to try wood burning!

On the back of the card is a variety of ideas for wood burning. I like that they give suggestions on where you might take your newfound crafting skill after completing the project. Conveniently, you can buy more supplies at their online shop.

FYI, Darby Smart does not include instructions in their boxes. Instead, they provide a code you can use on their website to look up the instructions. I appreciate their efforts to reduce paper waste, but I like to get away from technology when I'm crafting. I think I would prefer paper instructions. (And thank you to all who suggested I just print out the instructions last month. I should have thought of that!)

Darby Smart included all the materials I needed to make my box. This is the blank box itself.

This is the template for the Halloween designs plus two pencils. The technique that should have been used here was to cut out the template and cover the reverse side with graphite from the pencil by scribbling thickly over it. Then place the template picture-side-up where you would like it, then trace the black lines. The graphite from the reverse side should transfer to the box. I didn't use this method, I just drew my designs straight onto the blank box.

This is the wood burning tool! I am so excited to have one of these! Guess what everyone's getting for Christmas? I'm not sure, but you can bet it will be made of wood and burned.

I'm sorry, I'm just so happy with how it came out that I had to show you all five sides! I used the bottom for figuring out how the wood burner works. I love this! My husband is going to stain it for me and then I will have the perfect keepsakes box.

The Verdict: I'm obviously thrilled with this project and the way it turned out. I tend to love most of Darby Smart's projects, and they do a great job with including complete and good materials. Once in a while they also do something that makes me ecstatic like they did this month - namely, they include a tool that you can keep using forever! Awesome!

Perhaps I’m slow, but I cannot figure out their website for the life of me. How do I sign up for a subscription!? I’m seriously writing it off for the shittiest web design and U.I. I’ve ever seen. I just want to subscribe and get a box mailed to me dangit!

I got my first box, it was the October box. I got the burner too, but got leather coasters which is perfect for my home decor. I am going to make something cute on them. I will give the burner away since I already have one.

I already have the wood burning kit, so I got one to make bath bombs. (Which I used to make shower fizzies since I don’t take baths.) I appreciate that they’re making an effort to avoid repeats for those of us who have been with them for ages. I love wood burning but definitely don’t need another pen.

Anna, your box looks great! I agree with your decision not to use the Halloween design. Your design can be displayed all year long and it is your creation! Staining it will make it complete.
