These are the supplies I was sent this month. My new hobby for April was calligraphy! I used to do calligraphy when I was a kid, but I used pens with ink cartridges and slanted tips. This is the real deal with a little ink pot and a nib and everything! The monthly tutorials are always online, but this month's kit came with a mini guide book as well.

This is where I practiced writing the alphabet. Real calligraphy is super messy! And ink stains! (Life hack - hairspray will take ink right out.)

This is my completed, fancy calligraphy phrase that I wrote just for you. I finally started getting the hang of using the nib, but I'm still kind of terrible at real calligraphy!

Verdict: I love New Hobby Box, and I think it's a lot of fun, but this month's new hobby is not for me. I found it really messy and difficult, and I kept thinking, why go to all this trouble when there are pens out there that make it a hundred times easier and neater? This was just my experience, though; I'm sure there are loads of people out there who love doing this the old-fashioned way. I appreciated the opportunity to experience it first-hand, though! And I also think that when it's done correctly, calligraphy can be really beautiful.

Spoiler Alert: Next month's hobby is scrimshaw! How unique!

This box makes me sad. I do calligraphy and your results indicate to me that this is just a poor kit (low quality). I’m sure you’d do fine with the right supplies. I’m sad because this box probably is discouraging people from picking up calligraphy. It’s really not that hard. *hugs* to you for trying to make it work with the poor supplies provided.

As someone who tried out calligraphy as a hobby fairly recently I can say that this box is definitely not worth the $30 price tag. Those supplies are a total of $10 at most for basic beginner brand items and the internet is swarming with free or very low cost printable workbooks and videos. I recall value being short last month also.

While I like the concept of the box, the value just isn’t there.
