Birchbox was one of the very first beauty subscription boxes—we’ve been reviewing it since 2012! Each month, subscribers get a new mix of 5 beauty samples, such as makeup, skincare, haircare, and fragrance items. Birchbox lets you choose whether you’d like a box of items picked just for you (incl... read more.

I saw this box in person today at the Birchbox store in SoHo. It was not impressive enough to hold my attention for very long. The candle is probably the nicest thing in the box, it’s a good size and smells nice. The umbra tray is very pretty but so small I’m not sure what I’d do with it. Pretty disappointed with this LE box, especially since I was hoping to unload my last $42 in points as I canceled my subscription after the points-pocolypse. Pretty sad that a company that used to get me so excited every month has changed so much for the worse in such a short period of time.

It’s not their best box by no means.. But i do line half the products and the tray i love. Usually i would but two this time just one. Bb is getting ridiculous and not with it. I wish or voices was loud enough that they would fox the issues and make it worth whine after all they charge all these companies to be featured in their boxes so they are not hurting money wise. But, if they keep up this road they will be hurting sub wise! Mysubaddic should send them a copy of all these complaints. Then maybe they will get their act together. Plus this was suppose to be a thank you box for customers. So this is a big screw you box.

I really liked the Summer le box, but not impressed w this one. I was a BB subscriber since the very beginning. Gosh was it 5 years at least? I cancelled 2 months ago after all of that time.. It used to be better..

After being with BB for 3 years I cancelled last week. This box is not worth 50.00 in my opinion & nothing is calling out to me… I definitely won’t be buying this. Easy 50.00 saved for somthing worth it.

This is really bad for a LE. I’ve been with BB over 2 years and buy almost every LE even the men’s boxes for my sons. There’s not a single standout “wow” item in this box. Everything either has been given or can be given in monthly boxes. When my yearly sub ends in Dec., I’ll have to think twice about resubing. The only reason I would stay is because I order a lot of products from their “store” and I’ve had really good experiences with customer service. I’m sure I could find another place to order my Oribe hair products.

You can order them from bluemercury and they have a rewards system too

I have not bought a limited edition box in years. They are not worth it anymore. They used to be great.

The tray and candle look good but otherwise this is really blah. It’s sad to see the spark leave a company that use to get their customers so excited. It’s clear that Birchbox is cutting back to please their investors but in order to win customer’s they really need to spice up their offerings. Hopefully they can get back on track for the holidays.

man, their limited edition boxes used to make me swoon. this does nothing for me. i feel no thrill from it at all. so sad. why can’t they get better, new, fun products?? it’s not that hard. it’s like they aren’t trying at all anymore. so glad i unsubbed a few months back.

Yup, same here. Birchbox used to be so awesome. I used to order nearly every special edition, got two boxes (or more) per month. Then they took away anniversary codes, points, phone support, well basically everything that made them stand out and I canceled. Looking at this box, it’s okay and all but I feel no urge at all to buy it. None. So I guess that having been away from BB several months cured me. It’s good but really sad what they’ve become. I just can’t imagine they will still be in business in another year the way they’re going.

I also agree. On the plus side I feel ZERO temptation to buy this box. I don’t want one thing in it. So— yay for budget!

I agree, doesn’t have a very special feel to it, and I certainly don’t feel like giving Birchbox any money since they took the points away. But I’ve gone cruelty-free, and it looks like every product here is cruelty-free, which never happens, so I’m considering it.

Is that the same Pixi palette they were giving away for free not long ago? … Not hating on it or anything. Pixi is not my favorite, but I’d use it. I just feel like Birchbox is getting kinda sloppy. We’re seeing a lot of the same ol’ products being repeated over and over, and for it to show up in a $50 LE box… Its like they’re saying, “Well, since we couldn’t give them away, lets throw them into a LE box and hope nobody notices”.

The CR lip stain was also free with purchase not long ago…

Yes! My thoughts exactly Bette. I thought the same thing when I saw the Pixi Palette. They were giving this away a free gift for subscribing to BB. I know for fact the Cynthia Rowley lip stain has been in the shop for a long time, I wanna say a year at least. It is currently in the sale section of the shop too. Literally almost all of these products have been featured in past monthly birchboxes, if not the exact same product the same brand. Just very lackluster in my opinion. Remember the good ole days of the vanity affair limited edition box. It was a bit expensive but omg it was awesome. It was the only gift I asked for for my birthday. I was so excited to open it up and try out all the goodies. It seems like now they try to keep the products in a certain $50-$60 price range, but if the vanity affair box taught them anything, people will pay more for a limited edition box if it is stellar. They sold out of it pretty quickly, they didn’t have to put it in the sale section and discount like they do now. They need to focus on curated boxes that wow rather than more thrifty.

Yep, same Pixi palette I got for free when signing up a few months ago.

Easy pass on this one. I usually LOVE their LE boxes, but this one is just so underwhelming. The tray is beautiful, but not enough to make me want to buy this box. Waiting to see what I get in my September box, but it looks like after a year and a half, I may be saying goodbye to BB.

I was hoping for a great LE to burn through my last $35 in BB points but I’m not feeling this one.

Me too! So sad because I was saving my points just for this. Guess I’ll have to find something else good.

Same! I cancelled my account back with the review debacle and was waiting for a good LE box to cash out. Super annoyed that this is such a dud box.

I agree. Pass.

Do I “need” anything from this box… no.
Will I buy it the second it goes on sale… yes. Why? Bc I know that once Liz reviews it, it’ll be so amazing and I’ll wish I had one at that moment so I could enjoy it right away 🙂

Im a cosmetologist and I’ve tried every high end and drug store wave/sea salt /texture spray on the market and that ouai wave spray is pretty great. I ordered the full bottle after I got the sample in the play by Sephora. I really want this box , but Im waiting for beauty fix . I’m new to these boxes and I get boxymatized and order everything.

I agree it’s a good one for the most part. Sadly I’ve got a full-sized AND three small because of subscription boxes. It’s got a HUGE push going on from the company.

I wish we could use the class action settlement credit on this.
Reply
Jodie
What class action settlement? Was there one?… Hard pass on this box.
Reply
Jay
There was, but it only applied to subscribers in California. It had to do with failure to “adequately disclose” the terms of the automatic renewal. I believe The settlement credit amounts were between $5-$10.
Donna
What’s this about a class action suit? I have not heard about this yet so any information would be greatly appreciated. I just cancelled BB. I hung on past them pulling the review points thinking they might up their game in the actual samples, but those have gotten pitiful too, so byebye to me as their customer. Anyway, whatever you can share about BB would be wonderful.

I couldn’t agree more Liz….Do I need more mascara and highlighters right no? Well, no…but I need that little Umbra tray! ?

I adore Birchbox LEs!! This looks pretty good but I’ll wait to get a better look at it to decide if I’ll get it or not. I do wish the palette wasn’t Pixi, though. My experience with their cosmetics so far has not been good (love their toner, though.) And I am raising my eyebrow a bit at the Ouai. Again?? That’s the third box it’s been in in as many months! O.o
BUT I’ve heard good things about that mascara and I love Erno Lazlo and REN AND pretty much anything Umbra!

Ouai is the new pur-lisse/supergoop in sub boxes! Bring it on I say.. It’s a great company!

Briar, if you’re curious, Liz did an excellent review of the LE box. It was super. I hope they release more every so often

New Beauty magazine put out a Beauty Choice Awards Limited Edition box a couple of months ago. This was their first LE box (and hopefully won’t be their last!).
