Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to build out your makeup collection on the cheap!

This is one of my top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out my list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2016 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Ipsy-August-20161

Each month, ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items. I was expecting this bag to be canvas from the spoiler pictures, but it is actually a much more durable vinyl-type material.

And it is gorgeous too!

Now onto the items!

Ipsy-August-201611

Formula X Nail Color in Dollface - 4 ml Value $3.80

This high-shine ballet-slipper pink creme is my new favorite color! And I got full coverage with only 2 coats! Here it is on:

Ipsy-August-20162-2

Ipsy-August-20167

Trust Fund Beauty Liquid Lipstick in K, Bye - FULL SIZE! Value $22

This is a dusty rose, highly pigmented lip color. It isn't completely matte, but close. I really like the formula - it wasn't drying, and this shade worked well for me, too. (Swatched in picture below.)

Ipsy-August-20168

NYX Born to Glow Liquid Luminator in Sunbeam - .5 oz Value $6.25

This luminator blends out really well. (Which is a good thing since it is pretty pigmented - blended and non-blended swatches below.)

I liked that I could make this a very subtle highlight that gave me a dewy finish. (And this is 5/6 the version of the full-size, too!)

Ipsy-August-20161-2

Ipsy-August-201610

Jersey Shore Cosmetics Mongongo Lip Conditioner - FULL SIZE! Value $10

This lip balm is one of my favorite Ipsy discoveries of all time. I didn't think a lip balm could be that stand out of a product - but the formula is amazingly moisturizing, and the Vanilla Coconut flavor is phenomenal.

(If you've tried this lip balm and feel the same way, let me know. Hopefully, I'm not the only person who is obsessed with it!)

Ipsy-August-20166

Marc Anthony Deep Hydrating Conditioning Treatment - 50 ml Value $3

This is an in-shower treatment. After shampooing and rinsing your hair, you let this sit for a few minutes before rinsing out. I definitely could tell my hair was softer after using it, but now after seeing some reviews of this product, I'm wondering if I was supposed to use the entire tube in one treatment? (There is a foil packet available in the same size - which seems like a one-time use product to me.)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $45. That's pretty great for a $10 subscription box (And that's not counting the value of the makeup bag!) I really love all of the items included this month, too!

The Mongongo was a great choice for me last month. It always lives my lips so silky-smooth, luscious and hydrated! Lips feel amazing. The lip montly is really great service and I’m so glad I chose them. For that price it’s really great and I think it opens up a lot of opportunities for everyone, even those who are not that good with money like me. 🙂 By the way, their customer service has been great with me, and I think even those who experienced some bad things have to know they are just people and everyone makes mistakes. I would recommend everyone who wanna join, to join ipsy and they won’t regret it. 🙂

Ipsy, is the worst at customer service. I have not gotten my August bag and have reached out on several social media sites and email to sre what’s the delay and no response from anyone. I am going to unscripted because they are not going to continue to take money from me without a product. Apparently, a lot of others are experiencing the same exact experience right now. Please give me my money back and you refused to respond to telling me where my bag at.

Hi everyone,
I am very new to beauty subscription and thanks to this wonderful website I found out the world of subscription boxes and I recently subscribed to ipsy ( about 10 days ago) and when I check my status on my profile it says that they haven’t put together my bag and there is no tracking number. And that is my August bag… We are already at the end of the month and since I am so new at this I am just concerned . I have sent them an email but I haven’t gotten a reply.
How long does it take to arrive once you subscribe and after that around what time of the month should I be expecting my box to arrive?
Thank you in advance!

I am still so irritated by what happened this month with my bag. I ended up canceling over it. At the end of June I changed the address on my subscription to a new address in another state that I was going to be moving to the beginning of July. Everything was fine and dandy except that mid July I noticed I hadn’t received my Ipsy bag. I login to find that my address on my profile was my old address. Instinctively I changed it again and contacted Ipsy support. They said that the new address was now in their system and they refunded me for the bag I didn’t receive and said everything would be fine for August.
August comes and I get my email that it has shipped. Well, it was sent to my old address again!! I contact Ipsy AGAIN freaking out that I’m not going to get my bag and whoever is living at my old house now is getting my bags! The rep said they’d send me another one right away to my correct address much to my relief cuz I mean LOOK at how cute this bag is! It’s like, the cutest one all year right?
Well, I received my Ipsy in the mail, super excited only to find that it was not that bag and not the amazing items I was supposed to get (understandable that they wouldn’t be exact perhaps) but I was floored at what I received. I got a nail file, a smashed up, used looking Michelle Phan mascara that smells to high heaven, a cheap 99 cent store looking NEON BLUE gel eyeliner, and an 99 cent store looking loose banana powder that was everywhere because it wasn’t sealed…all within a plain looking metallic bag that just said Ipsy on it. Absolutely unacceptable. I can’t believe they charged me $10 for this bag. I would have even been content if I had gotten the cute bag! I find it hard to believe there was not even 1 left somewhere. So annoying. So, that’s my story with Ipsy the past two months. I definitely won’t be resubbing, especially now that I finally got on Sephora Play.

@redpandapop Wow that’s awful. Did you contact customer care again after you received the bag?

Juli

I got my 4th and 5th bag

2 spinning teacup nailpolishes
2 faces wipes
Tarte mascara
It eyeliner
Three tone bronzer
Spice eyeshadow

Has anyone else NOT gotten their bag yet? Mine shipped on the 11th and still nothing. Tracking has it going all over the country. I had 2 expensive add-ons with my points, one of which is the Hourglass stick foundation, and I’m very concerned that its been sitting in the heat for 11 days and its destroyed the foundation stick. I’m beyond irritated. Urg!

Finally got my bag yesterday! I also had an add-on which was the St. Tropez gradual tanner lotion. Too my surprise, they included the tanner but there was a “bonus” item of a glow toner. I don’t know if that was an accident or if they were just being nice because of the long delay, but it definitely made me happy! Plus, I really liked my August bag (got the trust fund k, bye which is very nice!).
Finally moving on to my September bag, yay!

Reply ButtonReply

KC

Nope, haven’t gotten mine yet, either. They ‘shipped’ it on 8/12.

I also have a Points item included and I read in another thread that those can cause the monthly bag to be slightly delayed? This is my first Points order, so just guessing.

Kelly

I received my first ipsy bag and I am slightly disappointed.. I got an olive oil moisturizer which I think smells horrible, tarte lash paint which is decent but kinda clumpy, the X factor nail polish which is ok, a bronzer that contains talc (yuck!), and a cheap makeup sponge. I’m hoping next month is better. If I am not impressed next month, I will probably cancel my subscription.

I received:

– Marc Anthony Argan Conditioning Treatment (chin-length hair, going to get a few uses out of it)
– Beauty For Real 24-7 Eyeliner – keep saying I DO NOT want pencil or gel liners, only liquid – keep getting pencils and gels
– Organic Pharmacy Rose Facial Cleansing Gel – smells nice, not a makeup remover.
– Beau Gachis Applicator Sponge – so I finally found out what all the fuss is about with these sponges! Loving it!
NYX Illuminator in Gleam – My profile is red hair/blue eyes/fair skin – so ipsy sends me the DARK illuminator. More like a bronzer on me.

Reply ButtonReply

Stefanie

I got the applicator sponge for the first time, too, and it has changed my life!

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

I am soo not happy. I got everything that isn’t on my profile. Nyx illuminator in gleam which is way too dark, formula x nail polish which i will not use because i do not use any nail products and have told ipsy this before, in transit primer, peter lamas complexion booster and japonesque blush. I like the blush but everything else i will not use. I got three different face primers and illuminators. There should be more variety. I did not get any lip products which is the only thing i have checked on my profile. I have yet to receive a lip product out of five months of bags. If they didnt have such o great points system i would cancel. Hopefully ipsy will read my reviews on the products and actually look at my profile for next month.

Sandy

I have the same complaint I get all ask cleansers and eyeliner which I do not use

Got my bag today, it’s the saddest bag I’ve gotten from ipsy. Everything is sooo small. Nothing is full size in my bag and the product i redeemed my points for isnt with my bag. I emailed about my missing product. Usually I get a good size or full size something, not this month?

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

I didn’t get any full size either. I did get my extra item i used points on though. You might have redeemed your points after the date though. It will probably be in next months bag. You should contact them to make sure.

I got my 3rd bag yesterday.

Organic Rose facial face wash I love this!!!

IT leave in hair treatment. I tried it today and is a great it took the tangles out my hair, which is hard to do. I have long thick hair and it tangles horribly. I have to comb it many times throughout the day.

Spinning teacup nail polish

Nomad spice eyeshadow. Very pretty!

Nyx highlighter in gleem

Amie

I am new to Ipsy and just received my 1st Glam bag (which is the August one). I am not very impressed. I do love the bag. I received:
-111 Skin Bio Cellulose Facial Treatment Mask
-Peter Lammas Supreme Radiance Complexion Booster (which doesn’t come even half full)
-Beauty For Real Eyeliner
-Lord & Berry Lipstick Crayon (the one thing I am excited about)
-NYX Liquid Illuminator in Gleam (I already have all shades of these and am not a fan. They don’t compare to my collection on Too Faced, Anastasia, Becca, and Cover FX)
I will give Ipsy one more chance with my September bag and if that isn’t any better wI’ll definitely be canceling and finding a better subscription box. Sure wish my spot on the waitlist for Sephora Play would come up.

Amie, Sephora Play! Opened their sub boxes today. My new favorite with deluxe samples.

Heather Robinson

Oooh good to know! I, too, am dissapointed in what is coming in my bag — I peaked on the site and it is not very impressive. All sample sizes, too. 🙁 I would have loved what is pictured above. Do they give priority to the people who blog? That sucks!

C

Neogen derma- gold black caviar (1pad)
It cosmetics- no tug waterproof gel eyeliner (very excited to try)
Winky lux- diamond powder foundation
Ciate London- full nail polish (dangerous affair)
Marc Anthony- Argon conditioning treatment

I’ve never done a subscription bag before (and I’m waiting till I move out of an apartment to try this one) but I can’t help but read the reviews and comments each month to keep checking if it’s worth the trouble. Some seem really disappointed while others are excited, and there are so many different types of products. I love the idea of being able to try products I would never consider buying otherwise, and I’m pretty bad at make-up in general so having something to test out and not break the bank on sounds right up my alley.

So basically here’s my question, is it worth it?
ps- I really want the bag, love the design this month!

Reply ButtonReply

Morgan

Completely worth it. I was in the same boat as you but I started geting my bag shipped to my mother in law). It can be disappointing sometimes but I have to remind myself that it’s worth it when I think of the value, how long it takes to get through even a deluxe sample (I.e. Eyeliner), and getting a chance to learn to use new product types or discover new brands.

Reply ButtonReply

E

I absolutely believe it’s worth it!! You get to try so many different products!! I love the surprise of it!! I don’t look at the spoilers or try to figure out what I’m going to receive!! It’s like Christmas every month!!! I would never complain about spending so little to get such a variety!! Also, some of the items I’ve received are GREAT for traveling!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Sherry

Yes its worth it. If you dont have a large make up or skin care collection or a lot of subscription boxes then its more fun. If you start to get more boxes you will start to get repeat items because they seem to spread from box to box. Plus if you don’t pay attention to what others get then you’ll love what you get better. The grass always seems greener on the other side. I just cancelled a couple of boxes because I’m getting over loaded on similar products. But for $10 a month ipsy is a cute sub to start with.

Reply ButtonReply

C

I agree with your comment 100%. Plus woman tend to get stuck in the same colors. Makeup should be played around with. You can change the colors with different products or learn to blend certain colors by watching some videos. I don’t ever get envy because I can play with what I’m getting or give/gift…. I would NEVER just throw them away.

This is my first month, I absolutely LIVE the bag. My mom gets them subscribed to her too she got the other design ( The one I REALLY WANTED lol). When she comes up to visit my daughter she’ll bring hers and we’ll switch what we like/ don’t like. I wasn’t too impressed with the products I received this month, but my mom on the other hand had recieved all really good brand products. My advice to you would be to just DO IT. its like a present each month lol but honestly the way I look at it, what you’re paying vs what you’re receiving, you’re really winning here. Some months won’t be all the great, but others will blow you out the water and be well over a $10 value. I received a full size lipstick valued at $20. Just do it chick!???❤

Reply ButtonReply

Morgan

I wish I could trade with my mom like that. She only has a couple of colors she uses and what she wears is limited, even though she has a ton of crusty 25 year old makeup.

C

I wasn’t impressed with my first one either but as I fill out the reviews it really did improve and I love it too. Kudos to being involved in it with your mom, as I love when my daughter will take the products too. She’s newer to makeup but has learned a lot and it nice to click on something, lol.

C

I think it’s worth it. I have had it 6 months and I’ve recieved around Lowest $34.90 and highest was $62 in value. I seem to enjoy boxycharm more for the value. I’m on month 7 highest $166 lowest $106. I pay $116 for the 6 months. It seems to be more around the $120 a month in value. I was really new to playing around with makeup too as I was stuck on Mary Kay for 20yrs. I wouldn’t pay for most of the items either so I love that I’m not breaking the bank too. Also I share what I know I don’t want or need with my teen. I also figure if none of us want they can be included in gifts and so far anything I have given the person has really liked they got such a nice product to try. I seen many complaints that people didn’t want anymore brushes…well I never spend much on brushes and I have loved the ones I got. Mascara complaints… I have sensitive eyes to it so it’s nice that I’m not wasting money on ones I can’t use. Ipsy sending the smaller size is great. Not much waste, you will use it and great for throwing in your purse. Eyeliners are not all the same either, if you get to much they are both great gifts.

Sarah

Finally…no eyeliner or nail polish!! Lol. I got:
NYX Illuminator
Dr. G Brightening Peeling Gel
Dead Sea Wash off Mask
Lord and Berry Lip Crayon
Jelly Pong Pong eyeshadow palette

Pretty good overall. I will use everything for once 🙂

My bag included:
This Works In Transit Closeup (moisturizer/primer)
Beauty For Real 24/7 Eyeliner (Black)
OFRA Cosmetics You Glow Girl Highlighter
Organic Surge Perfecting Face Polish
Ciate London Paint Pot in Dangerous Affair

I was very happy with my bag!! My only bust was the This Works moisturizer, it was much too oily for my skin type, and had the most horrible scent to it. I really liked the Dangerous Affair color of nail polish, but I really struggled with the brush. The product description described it as a “tapered precision brush that allows for easy and more controlled application.” For the life of me I could not use this brush and not get polish all over the sides of my fingers, it was wide and beyond my expertise, but the quality and color of the polish is fantastic. 🙂

I’m in Canada and I received the Jelly Pong Pong eyeshadow, the Tarte lipstick in Wonder, Ciate nailpolish in Spinning Teacup (lavender), Symphony Beauty cucumber makeup wipes and the Mongongo lip balm which was my favourite item in the bag – it smells AMAZING and it goes on smooth without being waxy. It’s like putting coconut oil on your lips but not greasy. I seriously love it, I was really stoked when I opened the cap and this wonderful coconut smell wafted up…and it’s organic!

I got:
– Paula’s Choice skin perfecting exfoliant 1 oz ($9)
– Trust Fund Beauty liquid lipstick full size ($22)
– Winky Lux complexion powder 3g ($10)
– Organic Pharmacy Rose Facial Gel 30 mL ($18)
-IT cosmetics black gel eyeliner .012 oz ($15)

I’ve been pretty generous with my price estimates, but overall I’m excited to try all these things. Yes I get a lot of black eyeliner, but I do wear it everyday so it’s nice to try products I wouldn’t normally buy. I’m in love with the rose facial gel! So sad to see a full bottle is waaaaaaay out of my price range.

Reply ButtonReply

Juli

I have received two of my 5 bags.

I have jelly pong pong pallette. I love this pallette. I got it the last time they gave it out and I wear it all the time. I was so happy to get it again.

I got 2 dangerous affairs nail polishes

Facial deep sea mask. I love facial masks!!

Organic Rose facial cleansing gel. I love this, it smells so good!

Marc Anthony hair product

NYX Gleam highlighter

Neuma hair cream

Tarte lip crayon

Rodail eyeliner

I got exactly the same bag as pictured except instead of the lip balm I got two Camella Oil Ampoule face masks that I am excited to try.

Im pleased with my bag, I mean the bag itself is worth the monthly fee and the items inside?? Let’s see, the NYX highlighter. Great. I will use. Dead Sea Mask that was in a cute pouch like thingamajig. Cute little Pacifica Bronzer and the JellyPongPong Neopolitan Palette which is travel friendly and highly pigmented. I think I made out like a bandit.

Reply ButtonReply

Paige

The bag is so stinking cute!
I got:
*Tarte Lash Paint mascara sample – $10 now I see what all the fuss is about. Great stuff.
*Ciate nail polish in a pale lilac color that I like FULL SIZE $17
*Rodial black eye liner FULL SIZE $21- I know I’m in the minority but I wear black liner daily and needed a new one
*Madam CJ Walker silkening blow out cream 2 oz sample $6.50 RV – I’m game to try anything to make my hair look better
*Beaute Basics 3 tone bronzer – This is the only dud in the box for me. Gave away immediately. I can’t find this exact product on their site but estimate the value no more than $10

Overall, I liked Liz’s box a lot, even though it was a lower value for Ipsy. I would have used everything in her bag. Mine adds up to around $64.50 assuming I’m close on the bronzer RV. With 4 of the 5 products being keepers, and loving the bag itself, I consider this a great value for $10.
