I'm reviewing The Couple Next Door:

botm_092016-002

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena - Retail Value $26 (On Amazon for $15.60)

Book Summary from Amazon:

It all started at a dinner party. . .

A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . .

Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco  soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years.

What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family—a chilling tale of  deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

I cannot PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! (But I forced myself to do it just for a little to write this review.)

This is one of those books that pulls you in from the first chapter, and before you know it the sun is setting and you are wondering where the day went!

If you have gotten hooked on true-crime shows like Making a Murderer, I think it is safe to say you will find this book riveting as well. The author uses different viewpoints, so you get to see how both potential suspects and detectives are interpreting the events.

This book came with a letter from the judge, Liberty Hardy, on why she picked this book:

And a Book of the Month bookmark:

Verdict:  I'm very pleased with the value of my Book of the Month subscription. The prices are better than Amazon for new hardcover releases, and they always feature a good mix of popular new books. And I love that you can skip any month you aren't interested in, and you can also buy books from previous months as add-ons for $9.99.

What do you think of the Book of the Month subscription? Which book (or books) did you pick this month?

FYI - you can still get this book or any of the other September selections for your first month if you sign up by the 14th. Use coupon code READ5 to get your first month for only $5!

For those looking for more future add ons I just finally got around to reading my January selection (too many other books called my name first) My Name is Lucy Barton and it was great. Super quick read but very elegant in its simplicity.

I also really enjoyed the older picks Shrill and So You’ve been Publicly Shamed – they both really make you think about some of the things we consider normal and acceptable now as a society that we really should not. And of course, Eligible, The Nest and a 1000 naked strangers were all great too.

I usually only do one book a month bc I have two other friends who get BOTM so we all pick different and trade. Plus I read on my kindle and use the library still too. This is one sub I will never give up! I wish they would do a YA version too……

I picked Behold the Dreamers and The Secret History by Donna Tartt in BOTM’s new Other Favorites that they started offering. I love the Other Favorites section they started as it gives me more books to choose from. I was going to start Behold the Dreamers first, but The Secret History looked so good. It is completely absorbing and I’m hooked! Plus I’m a fan of Ms. Tartt and wanted to read her debut book as well.

By far, BOTM has become my favorite subscription! The option for early shipment is so great and I always pick it every time.

First month I actually skipped, nothing really called to me, but totally ok. I have a huge back log from ordering so many each month. Love this sub!

I’m reading “All at Sea”. It’s a small book but it’s very tolling emotionally so I am reading it in small bursts. I also ordered “A Gentleman in Moscow”. I usually just read one book a month but am glad I ordered two this month since “All at Sea” is thin.
This is my 4th month of subscribing. I was spoiled the past 3 with the freebies in each box.

This was my first month and I chose The Couple Next Door. I also added on two books from previous months. I can’t wait to start reading them.

There has only been one month since I started last October I didn’t get three books. I. Love. This. Subscription. I gave up PSMH for this and Uppercase YA. Book lover, and customer, for life.

I’d be way happier with BOTM if their shipping wasn’t so horrible. I ordered mine to be mailed early, and it JUST left Las Vegas after sitting there for the better part of a week. It drives me crazy how damn long it takes them to ship.

Yes! Mine shipped almost a week ago and has only moved twice. It’s still nowhere close to where I live. I usually don’t receive this sub until the last week of the month. Beyond frustrating!

I know! When I first started a year ago it came 2 day but it must have been too expensive to sustain…..

I picked the same book, and it should arrive next week! I also picked up The Woman in Cabin 10 and Missing, Presumed (I just joined this month). I hope they are all good since I’ll be on maternity leave this winter!

The Woman in Cabin 10 was a nail biter. You’ll enjoy that one for sure! This month I chose Behold the Dreamers, A Gentleman in Moscow and the Couple Next Door. I almost always purchase 3 books as their selection is always super. Welcome to the club! ?
