The box came with a personalized card telling us which books we were receiving from our personal book picker. The profile you fill out when you sign up for Bookü asks about their grade, age, reading level, interests and also has a spot for you to the book picker anything else you want them to know about your child. This helps them get to know your child well and figure out the best books for them. Our books were based on my son’s profile so your child may receive completely different books.
Dinotrux Go to School by Chris Gall - $10.86 on Amazon (retail price $15.00)
In my son’s profile I mentioned he likes dinosaurs. Unfortunately this is one we already own, but it will be passed along to one of his dinosaur loving cousins. This book combines truck names with dinosaur names and while it’s not my favorite to read, it’s one my son enjoys so that’s what matters most!
Shark School 3 Books in 1 by Davy Ocean - $7.60 on Amazon (retail price $8.99)
This paperback anthology arrived in pretty bad shape. The front cover was ripped, the back cover was very wrinkled and there was marker on the bottom pages making me feel like it was a clearance find. I can’t imagine why they sent us an over 300 page book to a kindergartener. In my son’s profile I said he’s not reading yet, just learning basic sight words. This may be a cute book but I don’t see us even cracking it open until second grade at the earliest.
The Amazing Trail of Seymour Snail by Lynn E. Hazen - $16.99
What an adorable book about following your dreams and demonstrating perseverance. Seymour the Snail dreams of being an artist and is determined to make it happen. This book is longer than what we usually read at home, but my son would like to start tackling chapter books at night stretching it out over a few days. The illustrations make transitioning to chapter books less daunting.
Verdict: Bookü was a bit of a disappointment this month. Receiving one book we already own, one book that wasn’t written for his reading level (and was in poor shape) and one really cute selection leaves me with mixed feelings. Our first box in June was a huge success so I think we just had an off month. I am confident our next month will be better.
What do you think of Bookü? Would you prefer to try the Books Only box or the Books & More box?
