The October 2016 POPSUGAR Must Have box is on sale now! (If you sign up for a subscription, this should be your first box.)

And we have an exclusive new spoiler that's a Special Extra for the October Box! Each box will include:

pop-sugar-october-2016-001

Power Your Happy by Lisa Sugar - Retail Value $25

FYI - This book is a "Special Extra" in the October box and is in addition to the standard monthly value.

And with this book release, I was able to interview Lisa Sugar and ask about the POPSUGAR Must Have Box and Power Your Happy!

screen-shot-2016-09-16-at-10-41-30-am

POPSUGAR Must Have has been one of my favorite subscription boxes since it launched in 2012. When you first started POPSUGAR Must Have, no other subscription company was doing anything like it! What inspired you to create a subscription box?

At POPSUGAR our editors love testing, recommending, and writing about our favorite products every day! At the same time, my kids were getting a monthly craft box and their excitement around this package and the fun we have working on it together made Brian and me realize how wonderful it would be if we could deliver this form of happiness to our POPSUGAR audience. We wanted to cover the variety of categories our editors write about and we wanted the items to be full size. We wanted it to be a surprise each month and feel like a gift to yourself or the perfect gift to give someone else.

What goes into the curation process each month? How far in advance do you plan out boxes?

Our head merchant gets lots of ideas from trade shows, relationships with brands, and of course working closely with the POPSUGAR editors. She and I meet weekly to set big themes, test new products, and brainstorm. We are constantly emailing each other new products we can't wait to try! Our meetings are so much fun. In between sampling five different chocolate bars, I will be testing lipstick swatches on my arm. I come out of the meeting looking silly, but it's such a blast!

We have to plan the boxes several months in advance, so we really have to be on top of trends before they hit the mainstream. We like to think of the process as a fun puzzle; we have a theme we want to make great for the subscriber and a budget we have to balance, so sometimes we have to move products from one month to another so we can make it all work.

What’s been your favorite collaboration box to date? Any hints on future collaborations?

Asking me to pick a favorite collaboration is like asking me to choose a favorite daughter. Can't do it! We've been so fortunate to kick off partnered boxes with Neiman Marcus for holiday. Curating with their fashion director Ken Downing has been such a pleasure. For future collabs, we'd love to do something with a celebrity. 🙂

What’s one Must Have subscription item that you always have in your purse?

Currently, it's the Unplugged phone screen cleaners from the August box. I also always have a That's It bar, one of my favorite on-the-go fruit snacks. There is also an incredible lip gloss in the September Must Have box that is always in my purse!

Your first book, Power Your Happy, is about to be released. What is one thing you do regularly that makes you happy?

Smile, which may sound cliche, but when I smile and my kids, a co-worker, or even a stranger on the street smiles back at me, it makes me happier. 🙂

please I am dying of anticipation over here…
not sure why but this seems like the longest we have had to go without Popsugar spoilers

Am I alone in hoping that the coffee maker shown in the photo would be included? That would be so great. It looks like it’s a single cup drip thing there. I have enough coffee makers but I could see that sitting on my desk with a fresh cup brewing as I do my homework.

Great interview Liz! I’m super excited for this box. Is my birthday month so I’m hoping for a great box and that cozy does not means socks 😉 lol! I’ve been an addict to subscription boxes since I discovered this site and have done 6 since February but at the end my favorites are always Popsugar Must Have, Fabfitfun, Rachel Zoe and Ipsy! Thank you for introducing me to this amazing world and also for the reviews and spoilers, I can’t wait to see what else they will include! I super loved my September one 🙂 So fingers crossed for a great birthday month box!

How does this fall into cosy, fall, home, love… I am sure it is a great book but I rather pick out what I want to read. It sounded sooo good in the beginning but now…. Boooo.

Looks like she is making herself an instand best seller…buy at a very marked down price 20,000 ++ or more books and put then in Popsugar boxes. It should be a bonus item.

Tracy

It is an extra. It’s clearly stated: “FYI – This book is a “Special Extra” in the October box and is in addition to the standard monthly value.”

For spoiler #3, can we please, please have those amazing shoes she is wearing on the book cover? I want them for my own!

Oh, wow! Waaaaaay beyond my budget but super cute!

Man! I cancelled after last month’s sadness and now I am sad I did. Just keep bringing on the pain PSMH! (yeah, I know I could order just this one, but ugh, the money.) This book is something perfect for me right now, as some of you know, and the umbrella would have been great to block all this crap falling on me. I mean, it would also double as something to block the rain.
I feel like PSMH is like a relationship. Always up and down, but in the end someone always ends up giving up and regretting it…Let this be a lesson, never give up! (I’m just over here trying to convince myself I should get the box, sorry if you are reading this).

Tiffany

I canceled after I got June’s box, too many duds in a row and I am so glad I did there hasn’t been a box that I feel regret about not getting since. If there is a black friday deal this year I might consider re subbing if the deal is good, the first few boxes of the year were pretty good after May it all went downhill.

Weezie

Hmpf. I was not impressed with the gift-with-purchase umbrella with giant branding, and when I saw that this book was the next spoiler, I decided to cancel and skip this month. But then, I read that it is a bonus item, and am back to indecision. Ack, I don’t know what to do!

I think we all knew it was heading our way, but I think people would have been ticked if it was a regular item and not “extra”. Not that they should be surprised, she’d be a horrible business woman if she didn’t include a book she wrote about herself in a box she personally curates for a company she owns.

Reply ButtonReply

Jamie

Love it! I have been hoping this would be in a box and I love that they made it a special extra. Also I love the early spoilers.

Reply ButtonReply

Jt

When does the October box ship?

Reply ButtonReply

Cornflake

I think it’s just “by the 20th” per their site, but I’m not sure when that could actually be…

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

Thank god I didn’t order the box based on the first set of spoiler themes, that included home decor and cozy.

Reply ButtonReply

Adele

I agree! Not exciting at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Khaleesi

Excited to see this as a bonus item! Can’t believe my 6 months are almost up, it’s been a meh six months for me :/

Reply ButtonReply

Joy

I agree. Not bad, but still meh. The May and August boxes were great but June and September were not and July was a complete miss. I was really hoping for more candles, bath stuff, and useful or beautiful home goods, and fewer inflatable swans, bandana scarfs, and items with logos or words. I’m impressed that they can offer what they do for the price but the items are just too often a miss for my personal style.

Reply ButtonReply

CiCi

“fewer inflatable swans”- I’m dying over this!

I do like the book as an extra spoiler though. I will definitely read it.

TiaMarie10

This is my last box of my subscription so I hope I end on a good note! If they have another black friday deal I might join again but we will see!

Cornflake

What deal did you get last year? Just wondering – heard a few people mention it on here!

Reply ButtonReply

Tamara

It wasn’t actually on Black Friday last year. If they offered a deal at all on BF itself it was minimal. The deal popped up several weeks later. I don’t remember the exact amount off ($75 off, I think??) but it brought the price per box down to around $25 with a six-month sub.

Danielle

I guessed we would be getting this book, and I’m happy about it! I’m also loving that it’s considered an extra item in addition to the regular box value.

shakira

Excited to get this book!!

Reply ButtonReply

Heather

Was hoping this would be in a box soon, so cool that it’s an extra as well! Great interview! ???

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

Called it with the ‘Happy’ inspiration! 😉

Reply ButtonReply

Kate N.

Knew that was coming! Wish they gave an option for an e-reader version…I don’t remember the last time I actually read a REAL book!

Reply ButtonReply

Tamara

Totally agree. I imagine it costs more to let us choose a variation, but that extra cost would be compensated for by reduced shipping cost and lesser cost to produce a physical book.

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

That is actually an excellent idea.

Reply ButtonReply

Natalie

Agreed! It’s 2016!

Reply ButtonReply

Steph M.

Right? I was like …book, as in, pages? Save the trees and the shipping cost.
