VNYL is a pretty interesting subscription service for record collectors. When you sign up for this service, you fill out a lengthy profile that includes not only your likes and dislikes but also links to all of your profiles on digital audio services such as Spotify and Sound Cloud. They then ask you to choose a "#VIBE," which is an activity that you would like them to select the music for, such as studying or pool party. They then select 3 new albums and send to you based on all these criteria.

VNYL often sends a flyer advertising their new releases. One of the perks of membership is access to the member store, where they have a variety of albums for sale at a discount. Records purchased in the member store are shipped free with your next month's regular shipment.

I chose #STARRYNIGHTS as my "#VIBE" for this month. My curator for this month was Sam (pictured above). He writes:

"Anna! Here's your #starrynights shipment! As a huge Neutral Milk Hotel fan (ITAOTS is one of my favorite records ever!), you owe it to yourself to check out The Decemberists - they call NMH a big influence on their loud-and-proud folk rock, and it really shows! Next, since you're following Menomena on Spotify, try fellow indie rockers The Dodos (with whom they share a member!). Enjoy! -Sam"

Castaways & Cutouts by The Decemberists - Value $15.69 on Amazon

I can totally understand what Sam is saying above and his reasoning for selecting this album for me. Unfortunately, there's no way that he could have known that The Decemberists' lead singer's voice drives me nutty, haha. I have known about them for about a decade now and have listened to them many times, but they're just not for me.

Time to Die by The Dodos - Value $13.58 on Amazon

I was a little afraid of what this album was going to sound like based on the title and the back cover! It turns out it's really friendly, accessible morning rock. I like it!

The Domes by Slowmotions (value not yet available)

I am so excited about getting this record! First of all, it doesn't even release until October 21! How do I already have it? I don't know! Second, yes to lemon yellow vinyl. Just yes. Third, it sounds great!

Verdict: The day I get my VNYL in the mail is one of my favorite mail days all month! This month there was a miss, but that's bound to happen sometimes, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how rarely an utter miss occurs with VNYL. I can't really calculate the value this month since the third selection has not yet been released (!!!), but this subscription has never failed to give me a great return on my investment, so I'm not really worried about it. I'm a huge VNYL fan, and I've discovered tons of great new music because of them.

What do you think of VNYL? What did you get this month?

I’m almost 50. Do these vinyl subscriptions cater to the music of my generation? 60s , 70s and 80s? Every review I see of these feature obscure artists I have never heard of. I want Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC DC, Journey, etc 😉

You might want to look into Vinyl Me, Please which only sends one album each month but does mix a lot of vintage/classic albums in with newer artists. (I’m considering subscribing my little brother to VMP as a Christmas gift and he’s just turned 58.)
