When you sign up for Little Starters, you'll be guided through a quick quiz to select your sizing and styling preferences for your child. You can see everything we got in our box above.
We're sort of in between sizes right now, so I chose a size 2T for pants but a 3T for tops based on what sizes my son wears in other brands. He's a tall kid and sometimes 2T shirts are a little too short for him, but 3T pants are too long and just fall right off him.
I loved this little color picker! You can specify your favorite colors (and any colors you like to avoid). For my 2-year old son, I specified that we like to dress him in grey, black, white, and blue, and I definitely see that reflected in this box!
You also let them know if there are types of clothing you avoid.
That's it - quick and painless!
Little Starters includes a note with your first order, reminding you that you only pay for what you decide to keep. There are no upfront fees either (other than a $1 pending charge on your card, like other similar kinds of programs). They have free shipping and free returns on every box.
There's a little info card included as well. They design new prints every 4 weeks, so if you subscribe monthly you'll always be getting something completely new.
Silver Bolt Tee in Black, Size 3T - Cost to keep: $12.50 ($10 with whole box discount)
(Most of these items are not available for one off purchase, so I'm just using the prices list on my invoice.)
This is a simple cotton black tee with a metallic foil lightning bolt. Super cute and very rock-and-roll! As soon as I saw this, I had good feelings about this box.
Bolts Classic Hoodie Blueberry, Size 3T - Cost to Keep: $25.50 ($20.40 with whole box discount)
This is a well made, heavy weight hoodie. I often dress my son in a hoodie in the mornings when it's a bit cool out, so I'm always happy to add another one to our rotation. He's growing out of his 2T sized jackets now so this is a perfect transition piece. Plus, this print! So cute!
The fabric itself is really, really nice, but I did feel like the zipper was undersized. I'm used to big bulky plastic zippers on kid's clothes and this one took a little extra effort to match together and zip closed.
Bolts Little Slouch Pant Heather Gray, Size 2T - Cost to Keep: $12.50 ($10 with whole box discount)
We got three items with the same print in this box; thankfully I love this pattern! Not only do these items all go with each other, but they seem easy to mix with pieces of clothing we already own. Even though the print is the same, I love that the colors are all a little different.
I wasn't totally sure about the cut of these pants at first, which seemed a little babyish for my giant toddler boy. They looked really cute once they were on, though:
Disclaimer: They may be on backward in this photo, I'm not 100% sure. 🙂
I couldn't resist the all-over-lightning-bolts outfit. My husband said he looked like a Williamsburg hipster, but the grandparents thought he looked adorable (I agree!).
The pants are definitely a little cropped on my tall guy, but they're perfect for spring/summer. (I'm not sure exactly how tall he is at the moment, but at our 18-month doctor's visit, he was still in the high 90s percentile for height - my guess would be about 36" right now.) He loves to be outside and I hate putting him in shorts because he scratches his knees up like crazy; these will be a really nice alternative. The size 2T fit him really well overall.
The 3T tops, meanwhile, are a little big... but not too big. They will definitely serve us well all summer and maybe into the fall as well.
California Tee in White, Size 3T - Cost to keep: $17.50 ($14 with whole box discount)
I love the style and simplicity of this button up tee! It's a nice light fabric that is super wearable in the current spring weather.
Even though we are diehard Pittsburgh Pirates' fans in our house, we'll allow it since it since this tee doesn't actually reference the Dodgers. 😉
Literally, every photo I managed of this shirt has my son with a cup in front of his face for some reason. You can see the lightweight fabric in this shot a little better - it was perfect for running around outside on Mother's Day. Other than rolling up the sleeves a little bit, I thought this shirt fit him really well (also a size 3T).
Painted Stripe Little Slouch Pants in Black & White - Cost to Keep: $12.50 ($10 with whole box discount)
These have the same cut as the lightning bolt pants, but a different fabric. I love the graphic pattern!
The fabric is really lightweight - but it's also a tad see-through.
Superstar Pullover Indigo Black - Cost to Keep: $21.50 ($17.20 with whole box discount)
This blue color is so rich! This is another really nice layering piece.
This is listed as 100% cotton, but the fabric is really unique and has a subtle yarn-dyed texture. I thought it was a cotton-poly blend at first. It's nice and sturdy and seems like it will hold up well to wash and wear.
I did have to cuff the sleeves on this one for him to feel comfortable. I love this fun take on a stars-and-stripes outfit!
After watching my son jump and climb and generally do toddler parkour all over our living room, I can safely say the pants offer a completely free range of motion, too. 😉
Blue Sharks Pajama Set - Cost to Keep: $25.50 ($20.40 with whole box discount)
This matching shark pajama set is made of a very stretchy baby rib fabric.
I was pretty happy to see this set in the box! I didn't realize that pajamas were part of what Little Starters offer, but we always need new ones. I was worried they wouldn't fit at first since they were size 2T.
Since they're color coordinated too, I could definitely see us wearing these shark pants as regular pants.
The fit was actually spot on even though we're wearing 3T for pajamas in other brands. This fabric is so soft and comfy! I recently bought a couple new pairs of toddler PJs at Target, and everything was so scratchy and polyester feeling - these are the total opposite of that.
Bonus - Little Starters included a laundry bag with our order!
I am really hard on kid's clothes so I thought this was a really nice touch to help ensure these items last longer.
Verdict: I was really, really pleased with my first Little Starters box! I tend to avoid 'character' clothes and look for plain colors and patterns when dressing my son, so this was right up our alley. Everything was cute and functional and seemed both trendy and timeless to me, which is perfect if you plan to pass clothes on to a younger sibling. And other than those striped pants and their very lightweight fabric, everything feels well made and like it will actually last.
The cost to keep the entire box after the 20% discount is $102, an average of $14.57 per item. The pricing seems fair to me; it's definitely more expensive than buying Cat & Jack basics from Target, but overall in line with specialty brands like Primary.com and cheaper than boutiques like Mini Mioche, both of which have a similar minimal aesthetic when it comes to dressing your kids. Plus, I cannot ignore the convenience of being able to try on clothes with kids at home, and not having to deal with a toddler in a fitting room.
