POPSUGAR Must Have is a monthly lifestyle subscription box for women. Each month they send a mix of items from categories like beauty, fashion, food, fitness, and home.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: POPSUGAR Must Have

The Cost: 39.95 a month

ACTIVE DEAL: Get $20 off your first box!
CODE: MSA20

The Products: “Must Have” items for women selected by POPSUGAR editors. (Fitness, Home, Beauty, Food, and more)

Check out all of my POPSUGAR Must Have reviews and the Women’s Subscription Box Directory!

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing the items included, and what themes inspired the box.

The themes this month are: beach read, swim, waves, breeze, mermaids, and palm trees.

Now, on to the items!

Aloha Collection Mid-Size Ocean Coco Palms Pouch – Value $36

This pouch is made from 100% coated Tyvek, so it is splash proof. (They don’t call it waterproof, since you can’t submerge it in a pool for example, and expect there to be no leaks onto any items inside the bag.)

But it is perfect to use as a swimsuit bag, makeup bag, beach clutch, etc.

The material has a crinkly feel, but it is still pretty soft. And it measures 11.5″ across x 2″ wide x 8.5″ tall so it can store a lot.

Here it is with a few items to give you a better sense of scale:

This bag also came with a coupon for 25% off an Aloha Collection purchase.

Captain Blankenship Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray – Value $24

This spray is made with all organic and natural ingredients: Water, Atlantic Sea Salt, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Sea Kelp Extract, Organic Rose Geranium Essential Oil & Organic Palmarosa Essential Oil.

AKA - it smells lovely!

You can use it on dry or damp hair, and it is designed to give texture and beach waves to your hair.

My hair is naturally wavy/curly, and adding this spray to it just made it look a little more frazzled. It didn't make much of a difference to my straight hair, either. But! I found a different way to use it that I really like.

Here is my attempt at a hair tutorial 😉

First, I started with straight hair. (This $20 hairdryer/brush has been a game changer for me. I don't use a hair straightener anymore!)

Next, I curled my hair with the 1 inch Beachwaver. Since my hair is naturally wavy, it retains the curl really well. A little too well...

So this is when I brought in the Sea Salt spray! I applied it liberally on my hair and brushed it out to get this result:

(If you apply a lot of the spray like I did, you might get some crunchy hair pieces at first, but I was able to brush them out.)

I like the relaxed, more tousled looking curls - and no frizziness! Let me know what you think!

Billabong Aloha Trucker Hat - Value $18

Confession, I literally googled, "Are trucker hats back in style?" when I saw this in the box. And the answer is.... yes. (Exhibit A: WhoWhatWear article.)

When I think "trucker hat," I think of Ashton Kutcher in a Von Dutch hat, so I'm happy that this hat has a different vibe - much more sporty/baseball.

And I like the bright blue color - this definitely feels like a summer hat.

It's an adjustable snap back, with a white mesh back panel.

While this hat is pushing me out of my fashion comfort zone, and not something I would have bought myself, I can give POPSUGAR points for mixing it up. I have several floppy straw hats for summer thanks to subscription boxes, but this style of hat is a first!

My husband Eric told me I looked "pretty cool" in the hat, but I'm not sure I'm convinced. Here it is on:

Honest thoughts?

Meri Meri Party Straws - Value $6

Meri Meri has been featured in POPSUGAR before, and they make the cutest party accessories!

Thes pale blue paper straws would be great for entertaining, or just keeping in your car for various summer drinks.

And speaking of drinks...

Starbucks Frappuccino - Value $2.20

(This item is a special extra in the box.)

What a great special extra! My husband is always SO curious to see what the food item is in every POPSUGAR box (he has discovered so many favorite snacks thanks to this box), and this month he gets a drink and a snack!

FYI - subscribers will receive one of several flavors.

And there's a coupon included with your Frappuccino, too.

Snack time!

Belgian Boys Mini Cookie Stash - Value $1

These cookie butter mini cookies are shaped like mustaches!

This is a fun and easy treat to throw in your beach bag/purse, etc. My official POPSUGAR treat taste tester said these reminded him exactly of animal crackers and the bag was finished quickly!

NCLA So Rich Mermaid Tears - Value $18

Don't worry! These are "mermaid tears of joy, not sorrow." 🙂

This vitamin-e infused oil is made with sunflower seed oil and smells like honeysuckle. It's the best smelling cuticle oil I've come across!

And I needed only a few drops to make my cuticles look instantly better, so this little bottle should last all summer!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Retail Value $26 (On Amazon for $17.10)

This is a brand new release book - it was released today, June 13th! I love when POPSUGAR includes books in their boxes. And as someone who spends probably too much of her day in front of a screen, I always appreciate a hardcover book over a Kindle edition. (Of course, I still use my Kindle, too!)

Book Summary from Amazon:

In this entrancing novel “that speaks to the Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in us all” (Kirkus Reviews), a legendary film actress reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

This book was available as one of the Book of the Month options this month, and I didn't pick it. The summary just didn't call out to me, and I'm not much of a biography reader, so I wasn't sure it would be for me. But I'm so glad POPSUGAR sent this and forced my hand!

I found the book interesting from the first page, but I really wasn't drawn in until the chapter that starts on page 43. Once I started reading the fictional biography chapters from Evelyn, I couldn't put the book down. And then I started to get more invested in the story with Monique.

I'm past page 200 now, and I plan on finishing this book tonight! (If you aren't sure of this book like I was, I definitely recommend giving it a chance.)

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $131. (About $122 if you use the Amazon sale price of the book.) While this isn't my favorite POPSUGAR box, I always appreciate a good theme. This box feels like everything you need to throw into your bag to take to the pool or beach: a beach read, summer hat, water/sand proof bag, snack and drink, and two mermaid inspired beauty products. (Oh, and some cute straws!)

I'll use just about everything. (The trucker hat is a miss for me, though.) And I have to remind myself that sometimes the best part of subscription boxes is that they send things you wouldn't buy yourself. (I'm so glad I started reading the book!)

I live in Hawai’i and I loved the aloha bag and the aloha hat. It was a double score for me! I get surnburned easy so the hat is perfect for hiking or a windy day at the beach. Not like I’d wear it to be fashionable but it’s functional and sporty.

Excited for the sea spray and cookies. I’m smelling the cuticle oil on my nails as I type this and I’m really happy with the scent.

I just got my box today! I must be the last person. I love it. I’m surprised how much I love it. I needed a cap for my walks. I even wear them in the car now. Anything to manage my dark spots. I don’t ever care what the cap looks like but this one reminded me of my youth. It’s big and I can see how some people probably hate it.

Love love love the aloha bag. So many uses this summer!

The mermaid spray is so pretty and smells good and works well with my hair. The cuticle oil is fabulous and smells divine.

The book…eh and I’ll use the straws for swizzle sticks.

Love the Starbucks and the cookies. It was a fun box. Definitely full of items I wouldn’t pick out, but will definitely use

The ETA on my box is next Friday 6/30/17
I can’t waitttttt any longer. I’ve never gotten a box so late before. ☹️

I agree…mine hasn’t even shipped yet. I find it frustrating that they’re already posting sales for the June box when subscribers haven’t received theirs yet. This is one of the reasons why I cancelled this subscription. It seems to make more sense to wait for promos. At least then you know what you’re buying. Good luck!

I finally got it today! I hope everyone had it by now

This box was a big ‘meh’ from me. I don’t use sea salt spray because my hair is an inch long. The rest are OK but nothing stands out to me.
I feel like I’m aging out of this box. If the next few don’t inspire me, I’ll unsubscribe.

Why do they add books? I’d rather have products, I am selective about what I read and usually buy for my Kindle.

I love this box! I will use every single thing in this box (And I’m in my 30’s.) I would never buy myself cuticle oil ever, so glad I received this! I also would never purchase a hat, but since we have vacation next week, this works out! I love the sea salt spray! I thought the smell was a lot but when you spray it on your hair, it smells awesome! I also love reading a good book! This is a win for me. 🙂 Thank you Popsugar!

This certainly isn’t my favorite PopSugar box but they did a great job picking a beach read. I picked it up and couldn’t put it down! Nothing too deep but good fun.

Same here! Just finished it in one day but I can see some people being upset by the topic of it! perfect timing for the topic though with events coming up though! Other than the mustache cookies this box was a bust for me but you know, the good book made up for it!

Just got my box. I had not read any spoilers or comments. This box seems a little ‘light’ to me. Glad for the book and bag and cuticle oil. The rest are a miss for me. Can’t seem to get the hang of beach hair spray and that hat. No way on that hat…just no.

I received my box today and I like it! The hat is really cute on and both my husband and girls loved it on me so that’s a win! It will be useful for the beach and for his baseball games. The coffee is a win for me and my 7 year old claim the cookies as soon as she saw them! The straws will be used by my girls and I’ll try the cuticle oil today. The book choice is something different than what I would have picked for me but I’m still looking forward to reading it and hopefully liking it 🙂 the sea salt spray is gorgeous but I won’t use it so I’ll list it to swap. All and all I like this box and the packaging was beautiful and different than the normal Popsugar must have packaging.

Liz, love the review and the hat looks great on you!

I LOVE reading your reviews Liz, and I think the tousled hair look works for you!! The hat with your hair down doesn’t work as well, however….if you’re having a dress down/casual day or a yard work/hiking kinda day then throw the trucker hat on with a ponytail out the back and pull a few of the little wispy hairs by your ears out so it’s not a severe ponytail/facelift look. LoL!! Pair that with a baseball shirt, (Loot Vault has some cute Geek Chic ones on sale!!) capris, or jeans and a pair of sneakers and I think you’ll have a better opinion of the hat!!! (This is from someone who lives in a state with these horrible vermin aka blackflies that will carry the unaware away the moment you walk outside between late April- early June, so “baseball” style or “Trucker” hats are a must have if you don’t want your hair to smell like bug spray for the entire day!!) Good Luck and I look forward to reading your next review!! 🤗🤗 From Maine….the land of Far, FAR AWAY!!

Most psmh boxes are very taste specific thusly not being super well rounded imo but that’s okay! I would have loved the sea salt spray and cuticle oil but that’s about it. I don’t subscribe to this box bc I know I’d be disappointed every single month, I think Dec and Feb are usually the only boxes I get.

I love the pouch clutch and it will be great for summer travel. It’s light so it will be good in s suitcase. The nail product is also good! I wish we would get a quick dry nail product instead of oil. I use that more often. I’m over 50 and I like the different items but sometimes it’s not fitting my age. The hat is one example…. I gave it away with the sea salt and added a nice brush and gift certificate to Sephora for grad gift. The high schooler was thrilled!
Maybe I’m too old for this box , but I always get at least one thing in every box that I love. It makes me feel young!

Just received my box yesterday. Not understanding the hate. Maybe because I live in a state surrounded by water, this box was VERY useful. Hats are always needed at the beach. Water resistant pouch for my phone and camera? Yes! A book I was looking at buying? Yes! Cuticle oil and spray that smell amazing? Yes! An afternoon pick-me-up with a snack? Yes! I avoid spoilers as much as possible as I enjoy the “surprise”. I think they lead to pre-dissapointment sometimes as well.

Just got my box and had to comment that I am really impressed with the packing.

They have really stepped up their game with the internal packaging of the box this month! I can’t imagine anyone receiving anything damaged or broken with how secure and protected everything was done. Good Job PSMH!!

Not gonna lie, I’m glad I don’t get this box. If I paid $40 and got a hair spray I can’t use (allergic to aloe), an ugly hat, a Starbucks drink I can’t drink (caffeine intolerance), a bag I never would have paid $36 for even though it’s cute as hell, some cuticle oil, cookies, paper straws and a book (that seems interesting, but…) I would be sorely disappointed. I feel like this was a huge miss for me personally and none of the items were “must haves.”

I have to admit that I’m not loving the hat. Even though trucker hats are a ‘thing’ now, doesn’t mean that everybody wants one.

I like everything else in this box. I could always use a new hair product and the snacks are always pretty good. The straws my kids will use. The book is meh, only because I don’t read a lot of paper books…I get everything in digital format unless it’s only available in paper form. Books would be more attractive if they were offered in digital format for download.

Thank you for sharing! I love most of the items in this box! Especially since I’m going to Hawaii next month!

Liz, I must say that you can rock the hat. I think it looks quite good on you. Wanted to thank you for including the hair dryer product you use.I think I will try it. I have straight hair that I use so many brushes to smooth down that this could be a replacement for dryer and brushes with two hands. PS. My teenage daughter loves the hat and I was able to swap for it!

Just received this e mail from them:

Just a quick note to let you know that your June Must Have box may be arriving at your doorstep a little later than usual. Unfortunately, one of the products in the box was delayed in getting to our warehouse. We are working as fast as we can to ensure your box arrives to you in great condition. Boxes have begun to ship and all boxes will ship by the 22nd of this month. You will receive tracking once your box ships. We can’t wait for you to see what’s in it!
Even though I don’t really like the contents of this month’s box I am happy with their customer service. I did like last month box, so i am looking forward to Julys. You win some, lose some.

I am not sure how I feel about this box, but the curation feels off….we shall see! But I do love the Billabong label. so I bet the hat is pretty cool.

Thank you for the tutorial on the beach waves, that is adorable. Now I will have to try the multitude of sprays I have received in boxes.

Forgot about the hair spray since I hate that kinda stuff for my super thin super straight hair. But that also feels beachy!

May

I don’t love it but I don’t hate it.

Hat – Kinda cute, should be nice for going to the beach or park in the summer. Only have one baseball cap so don’t mind getting.
Straws – Will use but boring
Book – Excited to read
Oil – Always good to have extra
Snack – Too much sugar but a nice snack for the BF
Pouch – Will use, don’t have one like it, would be good for gym clothes

To me the box feels summery. Like you can take the snack (and straw), to the beach wearing the hat using the pouch for your bathing suit and read the book while you tan. The only thing that does not fit in is the oil which I think we got a similar one a while back? Maybe SPF would have been a better choice?
