Birchbox May 2013 Review - Makeup Sample Subscription Boxes

May's Birchbox theme is beauty diaries - they encourage you to share your beauty routines with Birchbox on Twitter for a chance to win a full size version of your box!

Birchbox May 2013 Review - Makeup Sample Subscription Boxes

The Box; Birchbox

The Cost: $10 a month (get one month free with annual subscription)

The Products: Beauty and lifestyle samples

Birchbox May 2013 Review - Makeup Sample Subscription Boxes

Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner Mini - Value $6

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle - 1 oz  Value $2.75

These are the two products in the box that I am most excited about. Thanks to subscription boxes, I definitely don't need any more black eyeliner for years, so this blue shade is nice twist for summer. Also, the Beauty Protector Leave-In Conditioner spray smells amazing and it's sulfate and paraben free - totally safe for color treated hair!

COOLA Classic Face SPF 30 Cucumber Moisturizer for Face - .23 oz Value $4.30

Folle de Joie Eau de Parfum -  2 ml Value $1.70

This summer I'm trying to stock up on safe and organic SPF - so this COOLA mini will definitely go to use!

Birchbox Finds Bonus Item - Pilot Acroball Pen

Birchbox Finds are bonus items that do not count against the samples in your box - these are bonus freebies. In the past they've included drugstore beauty items like a razor and an eye-cream. This pen feels a little out of place to me in a beauty box - but this is a bonus item, so no complaints here!

Verdict: I'm pretty happy with this box despite it being probably one of the lowest value Birxhboces I've received (about $15).  (Birchbox has me spoiled- I'm used to getting boxes with values over $20!)

I will use the sunscreen, eyeliner and leave-in conditioner, so I'll definitely get my money's worth. Also, the Beauty Protector and Sumita brands are new to me - so this box also has an additional value of helping my discover new products! What did you get in your May Birchbox? Any products you would recommend?

Here’s the link to my unboxing post http://mysesameseedbuns.blogspot.com/2013/05/my-first-ever-birchbox-may-2013.html

I got a completely different box than you. I got the Beauty Protector, Supergoop CC cream, La Face primer, matchbox itty bitty emery boards, and the Lip Fusion lip plumping lip gloss.

I don’t think anything I got I couldn’t get for free at Macy’s. I am very disappointed and will cancel if the next one is this bad.

I got a sampler box of green tea, an anti-aging mask, a tiny thing of waterproof Cargo blush, and the Isaac perfume sample. I feel like I got one more thing – maybe moisturizer – that wasn’t too memorable. Birchbox has gotten so ugh. I’m not sure why I keep hanging on to that subscription. $10/mo doesn’t seem like a big deal until I realize it’s $120 a year for things I almost never use.

I just received the Birch box yesterday. I did not get the sunscreen, eyeliner or pen. I did get the beauty protector, Isaac Mizrahi parfum, Paul and Joe Beaute foundation primer spf15, StriVectin eye concentrate for wrinkles and 3 packets of mighty leaf tea.

I was really happy with this box! I got the Coola moisturizer and a Sumita eye pencil in black, which I’ll use more than a colored version. My pen was turquoise, which I love, and I think fits in with their “diary” theme. I also got a sample of Whish shave cream, and – the items I’m most excited about – DevaCurl samples! No Poo, One Condition and Light Defining Gel. I almost bought the No Poo last month when as ephors had a coupon, but held off. Now I’m happy I did!

Birchbox has continued to go downhill – I got the same box and I mean besides the smaller samples I think the pink pen is a total insult. I mean gimme and blue or black pen – something I can actually see. Last I checked- I have not used a pink pen since jr high. Besides that if you are going to advertise high end beauty samples as part of your subscription don’t send me a pen and also do not send me anything you can get at Walmart (like I got last month).

I got the exact same box and am I pretty happy with the contents! I love colored eyeliner and this is a great one – tried it out today and it has excellent staying power. I was also in the market for a detangler and really like this one. I really wish there was another item in the box besides the pen, but I always review the items so it’s like getting $4 or $5 back per month so I’d never cancel!

That detangler smells SO good but unfortunately even a tiny spritz of it in my fine, straight hair leaves it greasy. 🙁 I wish they could make the smell into a perfume, haha.

I received the same box is Karen above All samples!. I just feel that birch box has been a joke the last few times I received it with the exception of the free women’s health subscription. I would’ve been better off saving my $10 the past 10 months and paying for my pop sugar must have summer edition box LOL! I’m canceling today!

The Beauty Protector is awesome! Had that a couple months back & bought the full size! Love it!

My box only had the eyeliner the same as yours. Then 2 mini tubes of Marvis toothpaste (.5 oz),an Isaac Mizrahi perfume sample (.05 oz), CoTZ skin cream (.3 grams), Amika moisturizing mask (.67 oz) & Amika oil treatment for hair (.1 oz). Pretty much all samples i can get at Macy’s for free any day. I cancelled my subscription

I’ve received the Beauty Protector in a previous box and it is soooo great! I like the smell – very light but its nice. And I have thick, wavy hair – instantly detangles when I spray this stuff in.

Michelle

Me too! I love that stuff, and actually I use it on my daughter’s hair in the mornings. Works like a charm to make her hair easy to brush and looking decent. 🙂
