Our Local Box Review - Monthly Subscription Box - June 2013

Our Local Box is one of my favorite new subscription box discoveries. Each month they send you a month of Kentucky-made goodies centered around a theme. They kindly sent me this box to review.

Our Local Box Review - Monthly Subscription Box - June 2013

The June box was a collaboration with Chef Edward Lee celebrating the release of his new book, "Smoke & Pickles." I love discovering new recipes and ingredients - so this was a perfect theme for me!

Pure Cane Sweet Sorghum - Value $12.50

Ok, another confession, I didn't know what this was! But then I read the card that's included in the box, and I guess they anticipated that:

What the heck is sorghum?  Well, it's a sweet yet earthy syrup with subtle notes of exotic spice that can be used in place of molasses, corn syrup, honey or maple syrup.  Let's just say that this stuff is Kentucky's maple syrup.  This sugary goodness is harvested and produced by Townsend's Sorghum Mill in Jeffersonville, Kentucky and has been voted national champion sweet sorghum twice.

Also, I included the recipe card for Ribs and grits - it uses all the ingredients in the box!

Verdict: Our Local Box is so much fun to open, and I always discover new amazing products in every box. I'm excited to give Kentucky style cooking a try! (Every month this box makes me think about traveling to Kentucky!) Have you subscribed to Our Local Box? What do you think of the June box?

Make your grits a little thicker rather than runny. Add butter, salt & pepper to taste. Heaven! Good with cheese and breakfast sausage, too!

Take it from this KY native, the secret to good grits is cheese. Lots and lots of cheese! You should definitely visit KY sometime – the Bourbon Trail is a must. Love your site by the way.
