Bespoke Post Review - Hemingway / Frontier Box

My boyfriend and I love Bespoke Post - it's one of our favorite subscription box discoveries in 2013, and it's also our new go-to-gift for friends! Every box we've received from Bespoke Post is full of top quality product - I definitely consider it an affordable luxury box.

My boyfriend declared this month's Hemingway box the best box he's ever received from a subscription box company! (FYI - Bespoke Post has changed the name of this box to Frontier due to copyright issues. It's still the same box, and it's still available!)

Each box comes with a brochure detailing the products selected, and giving a little more information around the theme:

What better to use as an inspiration than a writer, drinker, hunter, and all-around American icon? Now you can measure up to the Hemingway legend by putting this timeless gear to good use.

Machine Era Co. Whale Bottle Opener - Value $48

This bottle opener is much heavier than I thought it would be from the pictures. I love the whale engraving, and it's definitely a well-made heavy-duty piece. We have more bottle openers than we could ever need, but we were happy to add this to the collection!

Opinel No. 8 Pocket Knife with Oak Handle - $17.95

I love the history of this knife:

This isn't just a knife -- it's a damn legend. Manufactured since 1890 in the small town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, this pocket knife has become a profound icon of French design and utility. Need proof? Pablo Picasso used it to carve his sculptures, and plenty of legendary explorers never left home without one. And aside from being a MoMA-endorsed design masterpiece, it's got a resilient oak handle and stainless steel blade for just about any use you can think of.

It also has a lock mechanism so you can lock it open or closed.

Kaweco Sport Fountain Pen with Pocket Clip & 6 Cartridge Refills - Value $28.50

I love the vintage style packaging of this pen set!

It's easy to use too!

Poppin Medium Soft Cover in Blue - Value $9

This was the one variable in the box - you could either get this notebook in blue or black.

Verdict: We paid $45 for this box and received over $100 worth of genuinely well-made products. Bespoke Post definitely is a lifestyle upgrade every month. We liked this box so much I just bought a second one to use as a gift! What do you think of the Hemingway / Frontier Bespoke Post box?

They updated this later (last year) to include a cheaper notebook, no tin for the pen, and then this year they even switched out the brand of the bottle opener. It looks like they did go back to a hardcover notebook instead of the softcover they had last year though.

Still, I LOVE my Kaweco pen, the soft black notebook is fine, and the bottle opener (with the whale) is amazing, if totally way too heavy to carry around. Still and all, I might buy this one again some day, if only because the combination of things is fun to get. Maybe I’ll give some of the stuff away and keep some of it. At any rate, it’s all totally worth it for the price. Those Kaweco pens are the best I’ve used at any price, and that bottle opener (even without a whale on it!) is extremely satisfying to use). I like the Opinel, but honestly it just sits on a shelf with my other cool knives I never use.

Wow! My frontier box contained different products than yours!!!!

My opener didn’t have a whale pic engraved on it because it was made by a different company. My knife is a not branded the same. My notebook was far inferior than the one shown above. My pen and ink didn’t come in a neat little tin. I didn’t get the same nifty leaflet describing my box. How strange….. but I’m sure I’m the only one this happened to. Right?

The binding in the notebook lasted about five minutes. Toss away value.

The pen is great for a starter experience and travels well. The best part of the box for me.

The opener is weapon-heavy and you might need to tighten your belt if you are going to carry it around. I’m not sure what to do with it other than leave it in the kitchen drawer. Seriously, if you hate big key fobs you’re not going to want this heavyweight in your pocket.

The artsy knife is really for looks only. Mine didn’t have the company name on it….. Hmm. The blade is stamped with company name but the rest of it I can’t be sure. Why wouldn’t it be labeled with the company name? Anyway…. the knife is not substantial in any way. You do not want to rely upon this knife for anything critical or daily demanding… and it doesn’t ride in the pants pocket well. So where does it go? In a desk drawer. I plan to regift it as a historical letter opener.

Thanks Liz, I had ordered my 2 month subscription from FAB and I am going to use my first month for this box if possible, and save it for the holidays or my husband’s birthday. He would love all these things. Crazy about the copyright issue!
