Birchbox Review - January 2014 Subscription

Birchbox is pretty much the original beauty sample subscription box. I've been subscribing for years, and even if some months aren't my favorite, I really love this subscription - I've discovered most of my favorite beauty brands through Birchbox!

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Items

The Subscription Box: Birchbox

The Cost: $10 a month (get one month free with an annual subscription)

The Products: Beauty and lifestyle samples selected by the Birchbox team.

Ships to: US, FranceSpain and the UK

Check out all of my Birchbox reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

 Birchbox Review - January 2014Card

Each Birchbox comes with a card detailing the items included for that month. This month they also included some inspirational cards for starting 2014 off right:

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Be Amazing

I love these! I think at least one or two are going on the wall by my desk!

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Yes And

And on the back of each card there are ideas and tips for making the most of your new year. Now on to the beauty samples!

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Inika

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle – 1 oz  Value $2.75

Inika Mineral Eye Shadow in Eternal Marine - FULL SIZE! Value $20

I use Inika's foundation and bronzer daily, so I was thrilled to see their eye shadow in my Birchbox! (Inika is an all natural and organic makeup line). I'm used to using pressed eyeshadows or eyeshadow sticks, so if you have any tips for loose eye shadow application let me know!

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Nail Rock

Nail Rock Sequin Nail Polish Set in Sequin Green - Value $7

I can't believe I got two full-size items in my Birchbox this month! (Hopefully Birchbox is stepping up their game with all the boxes, and I didn't just get super lucky this month). I think I'm going to save this set for St. Patrick's Day!

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Juicy

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Perfume Sample - Value $1

Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Day Lotion with Clary Sage - .25 oz Value $2.50

This Burt's Bees lotion is a bonus Birchbox Find item:

Birchbox Review - January 2014 Birchbox Finds

This is probably my favorite Birchbox Find yet - I love Burt's Bees!

Verdict: I paid $10 for this box and received about $33 worth of products. I love everything in this box (minus the perfume sample), and I'm very happy with the value this month.

What did you get in your January Birchbox?

Glad I didn’t get this box, but the beauty de-tangler did come in my March Birchbox (Hmmm), It was the only product I liked and the smell is amazing. I have kind of corse hair and it actually makes my hair super soft. I usually use fekkai glossing spray or creme, so I was surprised this product stacked up. I Cancelled my birchbox, I hate foil samples and that’s all I ever get with them. Going with Ipsy now, just because of the history of more “deluxe” sized samples. Love glossybox for that too!

This was my first box with them and it was awful! Not 1 but 2 tea bags, a tiny sample botle of OPI top color, a perfume sample that I can get for free at any sales counter, and a tiny hair oil sample. I canceled, I’m not wasting $10 for random things I can get for free when I can put it towards a better box. My 1st Ipsy I got 3 full size products and a Valentines theme.

I received a three-month trial subscription for my birthday, and I really love getting a little box of unique products in the mail to try. I was pleased with the variety of products with my three Birchboxes, but I do not think I would personally purchase it in the future. I feel it’d be nice to receive samples, along with 1-2 larger items.

I’ve gotten pretty nail polish, hair samples, and even teas and candy treats. However, the sample size product of certain things wasn’t really enough to ‘test it out’, if that makes sense. Overall, I’d give Birchbox about 3.5 stars. If you can afford it monthly and like samples, it’s ideal. If not, perhaps try out another subscription box.

Mine sucked. Shampoo and conditioner, a mascara and burts bees. I will give it a month or two, and then will cancel.

Just got my January box. Not happy with the Gilchrist & Soames shampoo/conditioner considering it smells like a man’s deodorant and it’s the exact same in hotel I stay at frequently that I purposely bring my own so I don’t have to use it. The mascara is nice and the Burt’s Bees. That’s really it. I’ll give next month a try but if not much better it’s getting axed.

My box didn’t contain ANY of the reviewed box items. I did get the U.A. headband, which I love, but the rest of the box (Paula’s Choice Super Booster, dry shampoo, Camille Beckman body butter & mascara) is ho hum. Still, for $10 I’ll continue my subscription unless I continue to get mediocre boxes. Just signed up for Sample Society, so looking forward to receiving my first box. Dropped PopSugar, but continuing w/Glossy Box which is my favorite 🙂

I got my Birchbox the other day. I’m feeling okay about it. Beside the perfume. I just got my ipsy bag and I’m 100% in love with that one. Great bag this month.

Tina

I got a disappointing box too. I got the dry shampoo (I don’t use it), tea, small sample of body butter and mascara and that’s it. Nothing special at all. I would’ve loved the headband and the Burt’s Bees. I’ve not been blown away by any of the previous boxes either so I’ll try one more month and hope I don’t get more tea and lotion.

I think you got a good box. This month I like the detangler spray for traveling but I got chocolate and yet another color club nail polish. I use gel polish so i have no use for all this nail polish. Wish there was a way to say no to nail polish.

there is? just go and edit your profile and uncheck the nail polish box under the ‘my beauty style’ section.

I didn’t get any of those items this month, but I did get the bottle of Beauty Protector last month. I would have loved to get the perfume sample!

Connie

It seems that they sent most people some good extras and I got some brand of cheap tea….again. What is with the tea samples?! I want some facial lotion or a headband!

Reply ButtonReply

Jillian D

I’m so jealous. The only thing that I got that I wanted was the mascara. They insist on sending me shampoo and conditioner, even though I don’t have it chosen as a preference. I got the tea as well, which is fine, I’ll use it, but I want makeup, which is why I subscribe to this box. I’m thinking about dumping it and going with glossybox.

Reply ButtonReply

Sneaky Burrito

Yeah, I sort of feel the same way. I’ve only gotten Birchbox for two months but they keep sending me highly scented body butters (the Camille Beckman one from last month got in a cut and actually hurt) and hair products I won’t use (dry shampoo and hair spray are not for me).

Just got my Birchbox yesterday. I am a bit disappointed in what I got. I did get the Liz Earle face cleanser with towel which I’m so excited to try (btw loved the box it came in!). Got the grapefruit lotion which is a bit overpowering in smell and the consistency is not as creamy as I hoped. I’m glad I got the detangling spray because my hair is always knotty (curly hair!) . I also got the fuchsia nail polish that changes color in the sun. It’s way too bright for me…I’ll have to give that away to a friend. Last but not least I got tea. I really hate HATE tea so I don’t know what I’ll be doing with that. I wish I had gotten your box minus the perfume and replace it with my Liz Earle face cleanser lol

I’m on the fence about cancelling this subscription….

Laura

Not too thrilled with my box. Got some tea and dry conditioner. Anyway, what did you put down as answers for your birchbox questionnaire? I would have Loved your box

Lynne

Not too thrilled with my box this month. I received three Ahmad tea bags, a .75 oz Wish body butter that has a floral scent that I find overpowering, .08 ozbenefit bene tint, .17 oz Origins Smarty Plants CC skin complexion corrector SPF 20, and a 1.06 Klorane dry shampoo spray.

I don’t expect to love every item in my box. In the four months that I’ve been getting Birchbox I’ve only liked four items and they were in the first two boxes. The last two were a bust.

I got the same box as you, and I totally agree. The Benetint and the Body Butter are ok, but the rest (for me) isn’t up to par. I mean I can’t even get the CC cream off the Origins advertisement card because it’s stuck. I’m on the fence about canceling, but I’m giving Birchbox one more chance.

We got the same box! ,Can’t wait for mine to come.

Sneaky Burrito

Haven’t gotten mine yet but I checked the preview and there was some body butter (not the Camille Beckman stuff from last month but something else), some mascara, tea, dry conditioner, and something else I’ve forgotten. In other words, nothing like your box. Although I’m actually interested in most of it and I like it better than last month, so that’s good. Hope it comes next week but Birchbox shipping is SLOOOOOOOOW for me (I live in Georgia).

Jess

I got the same box as you. I’m excited for the dry shampoo but not the other stuff. The other two are body butter and a serum. I looked at the reviews of the mascara and it looks like it smudges and flakes. I guess if you’re really into all natural makeup instead of synthetic you may be okay with the trade off but I wouldn’t wear it.

Tried the polish kit last night…be prepare to get glitter everywhere! Also it will not survive a night of sleep so do it day of it you’re going to wear it out…you will wake up with most of the glitter in your bed!

Uh oh – good to know. Thanks for the heads up!

I’ve been using loose powder/mineral shadows for 8 years and swear by them. They last much longer than pressed or sticks, in my experience (as in, a little bit goes a long way per application). I second the advice to use a good primer. I also recommend dipping the tip of your brush into the powder, then tapping off into the lid. Then pick up a wee bit again from the lid to apply. Some start by doing their lower lid and crease first but with loose powders, I find it easier to apply a base layer of a lighter share, then doing the lower lid, then the crease and finishing off with a swipe of highlighter under the brow bone. Just remember the loose pigments are usually extra pigmented so clean or change brushes when applying separate colors. Especially for highlighter at the top.

So helpful – thanks Erin! After everyone’s advice now I can’t wait to try out my eyeshadow 🙂

Last month’s box wasn’t my favorite and I ended up doing a full box swap with someone else. But my box this month was amazing. (Box #2) *___* I got the two things I really wanted: the Liz Earle sample and the under armour headband! Plus, I get to try out the Coastal Scents eyeshadows. 🙂

Ahhh but that Burt’s Bees lotion looks awesome!!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Jealous of the Under Armor Headband! I saw a few of those on Instagram and they look great!

Reply ButtonReply

Melanie

Wow you got an awesome box. I couldn’t help myself and looks on the bb website to see what I got before my box got here. I really wanted the nail polish. I got the detangler last month and actually love it so I might grab some from the shop!

Reply ButtonReply

Kate

Liz, don’t forget to use a primer (like urban decay) before applying or else it will end up in your crease in a few hours!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Thanks – I just started using Stila’s Prime Pot a few months ago, and now I can’t imagine how I wore eyeshadow without it!

Reply ButtonReply

LizM

I also love Burt’s Bees. I hope I don’t get the detangler because I already have tried that product.

As for the mineral eyeshadow, I usually use the top of the eyeshadow and take a tiny amount to put into the top with a brush. Sometimes you already have enough of the shadow in the top that you don’t have to add anymore. Then you swirl, tap, and brush. (That’s what Bare Minerals says to do.)
1. Swirl the brush into the lid of the eyeshadow and grab some of the eyeshadow.
2. Tap the brush on the side of the lid to take away any excess eyeshadow.
3. Brush onto your eyelids.

It’s pretty easy to use and lasts forever. The only downside of mineral makeup is it can be messy since it’s loose.

Thanks so much for the advice, hopefully I’m a mineral eye shadow pro soon! 🙂

Ah! We got the same box! I was so excited for everything I got! Do you have any tips for the glitter nailpolish? I’m worried about removal!

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

With heavy glitter polishes, the only thing I’ve found to work is to place a remover-soaked cotton ball on the nail and wrap the end of my finger in aluminum foil to hold it in place. Let it sit for like 10 minutes (depending on how much glitter there is). I use a non-acetone remover, so acetone probably takes a lot less time.

Melisa

The trick to using powder eyeshadow is to dip your eyeshadow brush in the “dust” that is leftover inside the lid/cap and then lightly tap excess off before applying.
This is my first ever comment to you and anywhere!) not as scary as it seems! lol I wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your blog! I’ve developed quite the subscription addiction! All the best to you in this new year!
