Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review bag

For January, instead of their regular tote, Golden Tote did mystery bags for $50. These sold out SUPER quickly. (I think much faster than Golden Tote expected).

Because of this, from now on I'll do a reminder post the day before new Golden Totes launch so you can plan for the sale. (Sign up for the daily newsletter to make sure you get the reminders).

Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review Items

The Box: Golden Tote Mystery Tote (Sold Out)

The Cost: $50

The Products: Golden Tote’s ’once a year’ Mystery Tote is reminiscent of the Japanese tradition, Fukubukuro, where store owners once a year curate mystery grab bags of merchandise of the year at an incredible deal. The tote contains FOUR surprise items, including one Puella dress from previous seasons, at least one item found in a previous $149 tote and two other items, which could be chosen items or surprise items from previous totes. Each tote has a value of up to $300 for $50.

FYI – all mystery totes are non-returnable.

Ships to: US and Worldwide

Check out all of my Golden Tote reviews!

Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review Cardigan

Moon Collection Zebra Print Cardigan - Value $45

This is a fun print on a practical cardigan - I love it!

Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review Dress

Moon Collection Dress - Value $75

This dress is totally my style, but unfortunately it's too small. (I feel like this dress may not be a large even though I couldn't find a size tag).

Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review Maxi

Puella Maxi Dress - Value $98

This dress alone makes the bag worth it for me. I love Puella dresses and I love maxi dresses, so I couldn't be happier with this classic dress!

Golden Tote January Mystery Tote Review Top

Ellison Ellison Ellison Top - Value $40?

This top seems like something Zooey Deschanel would look adorable in, but I'm not sure if I can pull off the peter pan collar look. I'll give it a try though!

Verdict: This mystery tote was an amazing deal for only $50. I knew going into it that even if I only loved the Puella dress it would still be a great deal for me, and I think I'll be wearing 2-3 of the items, so it's a big win! (Look for Moon Collection Dress in the future swap section! 🙂

Were you lucky enough to grab a Golden Tote Mystery bag before they sold out? What items did you get?

I love the idea of a mystery bag, it really seems like a great deal. How often do they do these “mystery” bags? Do you have to be a regular subscriber to receive one, or can you do a one time purchase?

The mystery bags seem to be a once a year thing. And each month is a one-time only purchase – no subscription with Golden Tote!

I really want to love my Paella swing dress in black but I think it looks funny on me and a tad too tight at the waist. I would love to try the swap thing!

I finally got my tote last night! I received:
-Puella: striped swing dress in navy/white (was hoping for it and love it! I had no idea these dresses were so soft)
-Under Skies: linen/cotton blend moto jacket in navy (really nice quality with bound seams, love it)
-Under Skies: wallpaper print dress/tunic (wouldn’t have chosen it for myself, but it’s cute and my husband’s favorite item in the bag – wearing it at work now and to a party later)
-Under Skies: Tie-Around Pullover in cream (hate it – the fabric is nice but on me, this looks like a sweater Jackie from Roseanne would wear. It would probably look super cute on a young boho girl with long hair, though.)

I’ll probably consign the pullover, unless someone wants to trade! Not sure how I would go about trading with someone, though (if anyone reading this is interested, it’s a small. I usually wear a small/med and it fits well). I have photos.

This was super fun and I’m glad I finally tried Golden Tote!

I’m a tiny bit disappointed in mine, although I shouldn’t be because I got 2 items I love- the owl sweater and a flannel shirt. My other 2 items were both spaghetti strap maxi dresses and I’ve yet to find a maxi dress I don’t look silly in because I’m quite tall (making the dresses above my ankles)… spagetti straps aren’t my favorite either, but oh well! I’m still glad I got it!

I was disappointed in my bag. I got a skirt that won’t fit (says it is a medium, yet I have a 28/5″ waist and it is atleast three inches too small), another dress that is too tight across the hips, a casual long sleeved top, and a nice multi-stripe maxi dress. I think for my next bag, I will try sizing up.

Here is my Golden Tote ‘winnings’:

http://instagram.com/p/jPNc0igsiG/

Hourglass Lilly – Black wrap dress
Collective Concepts – houndstooth dress
puella – cream ‘sweatshirt’ with grey and cream striped back
Collective Concepts – sailboat tank top

Both of the dresses are a bit shorter than I really prefer. I may end up giving at least one of them to my sister. We’ll see. I love the sweatshirt and can’t wait to wear it. The sailboat tank is also very cute, but I always have trouble wearing tops like that because you need to wear a bra (unless you want to have a show) but hard to find one that works.

your tote is so cute! i loveeee that sweater. I just got mine yesterday =)…I got the renee c. poncho (which I am wearing right now. I feel so olsen twin), this great black peacoat with faux leather at the bottom, a striped puella midi dress, and a hem & thread banded top. the peacoat was worth the $50 alone to me…and I love this cape….but the puella dress was not quite right for me. I don’t really like ruching at the back and the color combination is not my favorite. here’s a pic of my haul: http://instagram.com/p/jNbesbL4-g/#

(if anyone is interested in trading dresses, let me know! =P)

Rachel what size is the dress I may be interested!

Rachael S.

Sorry, i just saw this! It’s a medium =)

Liz Cadman

I just looked at your Instagram pic – that peacoat is amazing! What a great mystery tote item 🙂

I received my golden tote today and I was overall happy however I ordered a medium and received one item that was large on the tag I’m torn because I want to love it buys it’s pretty big! I received a black puella maxi dress, Renee c poncho, a loilla black and gray striped dress, and the Navajo tapestry jacket which was the size large. Overall for $50 it was a great deal!

Mine just got delivered, and I’m so thrilled! As long as everything fits, I see myself wearing and loving everything! I got the Puella swing dress in black (the Puella swing dress in striped was my biggest hope for my Puella dress – close enough! 🙂 🙂 ), the Hour Glass Lily dress that was a surprise item last month, the Renee C baseball sweater (SOOOOO unbelievably soft!), and the Collective Concepts houndstooth dress in red and black. SO happy!!

Niki

Ashley, do you have pics of the items in your tote? I would love to see them!
Thanks for sharing your comment. =)

Hi Niki! I posted a pic of the group of items here: http://www.makeuptalk.com/t/130785/golden-tote/1140#post_2263237

🙂

Ashley T

Oops, correction – it isn’t actually the baseball sweater, but a similar sweater that was sent out as an extra a few months back. Still works for me!

I adore the moon dress!!!! I live in dresses in the warmer weather and this is exactly my style!! If anyone else gets that doesn’t like I’d love to work out a deal or a trade 🙂

Rinh

Just received my golden tote today too. I got a similar puella maxi dress that I love, but it’s too low cut, any suggestions on how to fix it???

Reply ButtonReply

LizM

If you know how to sew you can unstitch the back of the straps and readjust them. If you don’t sew, maybe clothing tape?

Reply ButtonReply

Rinh

Thanks, I’ll see if I can try clothing tape before sewing it.

Megan

I think you could totally pull off that striped shirt with skinny jeans or black pants and ballet flats! Keep everything else simple.

Also, I’m so so jealous of those of you that got totes!!

I got my golden tote yesterday. I got a cotton sweater, a grey print puella maxi dress, a flannel shirt and a polyester dress. The only thing I dont like is the polyester dress but I will try to make it work, it seems large but it says small.

I love that Moon Collection Dress. I wouldn’t mind taking that off of your hands 🙂 I know Golden Tote is setting up a swap site soon. My bag was pretty good as well. I happy with 3 out of the 4 items. I hope GT sets up the swap site soon!

This is random — I’ve checked ebay… but I’d really love one of the actual Tote Bags?? Anyone know where I can buy/trade for one?

Reply ButtonReply

You can have one of mine for free if you want! I will totally mail it to you if you wouldn’t mind sending a few bucks for shipping through paypal. What’s your email address?

Disappointed I didn’t get one, i love the zebra cardigan.
Liz, can the peter pan collar be removed from the top? Would make it less cutesy-just a thought

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Sadly the collar is sewn in, but I may be able to cut it out without damaging the sweater. Thanks for the idea!

You got some great pieces, although its a shame the dress doesn’t fit. Still a bit irritated with Golden Tote with how they handled this whole sale, but I think the reminder posts are a great idea.

I got my totes last night. I also got the same Pruella dress in black. In one tote, I got mostly dresses. In the other I got a couple of long sleeve light sweaters and a couple of dresses. Overall, I would wear most of the clothes. It was a great haul! (I’ll try to find the clothes online and update later.)

Reply ButtonReply

LizM

Ok..here’s my haul..

– Puella black maxi dress
– Puella multi-stripe black/ivory/gray maxi dress
– Love Stitch white cotton embroidered dress
– Collective Concepts multi-colored pastel mini dress
– Renee C. sporty light ivory sweater w/gray long sleeves and black detail
– Renee C. 3/4 sleeve gray/white lace like dress
– Lumiere ivory/black striped sweater
– Mak B multi-color block sweater

Maggie

Can’t wait for mine to arrive! I agree on your striped shirt though. There are some people that seem to be able to pull off that kind of shirt, and I don’t know that I am one of them.

Love your review! I was lucky enough to get to order 2 totes and I can’t wait to get them! I love seeing other peoples spoilers/review, and for this tote, every spoiler I’ve seen has a different mix of items. Love that zebra cardigan, and the Moon Collection dress. Too bad it wasn’t a fit.

I had a bit of a sizing issue last month as well. I order my totes in Small, and had picked the Faux tweed sweater in Small as well. The plastic packaging said ‘S’ on it, so I didn’t think anything of it, but when I went to finally wear it yesterday, I checked the tag and it said ‘Medium’. Luckily it fit.
