Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review – May 2014

Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review - May

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous. I recommend this box for anyone who is looking for a skincare beauty sample box with the occasional hair or makeup item.

There are usually 7 variations or so of each month’s box. For reference I got the Kit B box.(You can find the Kit letter under your order history).

Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Items

The Subscription Box: Sample Society

The Cost: $15 a month

The Products: Deluxe and full-size beauty and makeup samples. (Each month you also get a $15 off $50 to use on any order containing a product from any of the brands in your box).

Check out all of my Sample Society reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Skincare

dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 - .34 oz Value $13

Freeze 24-7 Anti-Aging Eye Serum - .25 oz Value $57.50

One thing that Sample Society usually does well is send good sized samples. (Since they send a lot of skincare products this is especially important so you can actually try a product and see if it works!) This eye serum is half the size of the full size version, and it gets good reviews so I'm excited to try it out!

Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review - May 2014 Ouidad

Flash Facial Exfoliating Treatment - .4 oz Value $39.60

Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel - 2.5 oz Value $6.75

This Flash Facial is one of Gwyneth Paltrow's favorite beauty products so I had to try it! You put on a thin layer on dry, clean skin, and then rub it off in circular motions after 1-2 minutes. (I used a damp washcloth for that part). Visibly I couldn't see a difference in my skin, but it felt a lot smoother, and I felt like my serum and moisturizer absorbed much better than usual. (Part of me hopes I don't fall in love with this product though since it is $95 an ounce!)

Sample Society Beauty Subscription Box Review - May 2014 CC Cream

Juice Beauty CC Cream - .17 oz Value $3.90

I've received quite a few of these little Juice Beauty CC Creams thanks to beauty boxes - I like the brand and the formula, so I know I'll use it, I just wish I received a makeup item that was new to me!

Verdict: I paid $15 for this box and received about $120 worth of beauty products! The value of this box is amazing this month! I think I'll end up using everything, and I really like that I get substantial product samples with this subscription!

What did you get in your Sample Society box this month?

Just a late word about the Flash Facial, which I’m guessing you’ve figured out now after getting a full size of the same product in FFF – you aren’t supposed to remove with a washcloth but massage with your fingertips until it begins to slough off. I’m guessing that contributed to your less than noticeable results. Just FYI!

I just got an email from them with a warehouse sale on their past sample boxes.

1 for $10
2 for $15
5 for $25

I just got the June box today. Exactly the day I was supposed to get it. When they shipped it out, they sent an email with all the products in it. I knew I had no desire for a second month of this subscription then. Yet when I opened the box, I really knew I had no desire. I received no full size products and the samples are so tiny. Very similar to some of the products I’ve seen birchbox have. Except $5 more expensive. I called to cancel the woman on the phone was very nice and my wait time to speak to someone was short. With Glossybox and Blush box, these tiny sample boxes seem like a waste of money to me.

I feel your pain sister!! I just canceled Glossybox and Sample Society and just kept Birchbox and Beauty DNA (my favorite!)

Thank You 🙂 – I know every box is not supposed to be great, yet I don’t like a box full of tiny samples for $15. ( $10 is one thing – yet not $15 ) I normally give these types of samples as bonus extras in swaps. — Maybe I should try Beauty DNA. Thank you for your suggestion.

I just recently subscribe to samplesociety, my june box will be here by Tuesday according to the tracking # they provided.

I wish I was excited….I’m not. They sent me an email what will be in my June box:
Juliette Anyway Eau de Parfum – Sample
H20 Night Oasis Oxygenating Rejuvenator
Karin Herzog
Vita-A-Kombi 2-1.7 oz.
Malin + Goetz
Vitamin E Face Moisturizer
Nicole Richie Fragrance
Eau de Parfum

I wont use any of these products ….I’m wondering …. Should I change my profile to get better stuff? – If it is worth it to continue for another month – The $15 off $50+ code to me is not really a bonus. Because they charge shipping. Blush box, if you “favorite” an item you can get 10% off + Free Shipping on any order even an order under $10 + they send a free gift.

I’m really debating about cancleing this box, and getting another blush box for only $10 more at least the products are full size…….

Does anyone have any thoughts …….I just don’t want to cancel to soon, yet I already don’t like this entire box.

Looking for a box with more makeup products..? Can you point me in that direction? Thought this could be one until I read your review

Wantable Makeup, or Lip Factory are all makeup products. Ipsy is usually mostly makeup too. Hope that helps!

Sneaky Burrito

I’ve been very happy with Lip Factory! Usually happy with Ipsy as well. (But then, I like Sample Society and all the skincare stuff, too. I think I’m easy to please.)

Andrea

I just signed up for sample society but I couldn’t find a link to fill out the beauty profile. Can someone help me?

I got the same kit as Sneaky Burrito. I received the warm glow in the CC Cream which somehow doesn’t overwhelm my fair skin. I also received the T-Zone which will be given away as my skin is fairly dry. I used the Borghese makeup remover which didn’t remove my makeup and I use a light touch. I see a ton of reviews for this product claiming it will remove stage makeup… as a former actor, I must weigh in and say, I don’t think so. I use MAKE makeup remover from Birchbox and it will remove anything. Also used the primer-like Flash , weird stuff. Not really, a mask or treatment, just a very mild exfoliater-but it works great.

What’s up with Ipsy, I have been on the wait list since early March, almost 2 months! But if I follow them on FB and post something then I can get in immediately! What a joke. I am going to give it a couple more weeks then I am going to cancel.

Just change your FB settings to private or custom and it won’t post on ther people’s wall. It’s not silly of them though… It’s clever really. Free advertisement in a peer group that would be interested.

Sneaky Burrito

I think that’s just how it works now. I was on for a couple of weeks, then went ahead and did the Facebook thing with a Facebook account for a blog I used to run but abandoned (and that consequently didn’t have any friends/followers/whatever). But it worked. If you didn’t want it to be associated with your real Facebook account (I don’t have a personal one and it didn’t matter to me), you could always create a fake “organization” profile just to get off the waiting list.

The only reason I have any social media accounts is to enter contests!

Liz: I just wanted to Thank you for having such a great site and all the time you put into these detailed reviews.
The swapping part of your site has been a lot of fun. It is nice to know that the samples / items I won’t use won’t be sitting in a drawer for 5 years, and I can swap them out to something I will use.

Thank you SO much! 🙂 I’m so glad you enjoy the swapping site. We’re still working on some features to make it even better, but I’m thrilled that it’s getting so much use already.

Liz: I just signed up based on your reviews :). I’m still on the wait list for Ipsy, it has been over 1 month, so while I’m waiting this box looks like it will be fun to try :)/

Liz you won’t have to worry about falling in love with that product – it will be full size in the Fab Fit Fun summer box 🙂 You rock, BTW!

Now this is a box I could have used. After 2 months of meh products and then poor customer service when the last had a sample that was half empty I’ve moved on. Hope all those samples have the product in them!

I’m thinking about signing up for this one, but am a little cautious because of the different kits that people receive. Are they chosen for you at random, or based on preferences that you fill out? The ones you’ve reviewed on here look great, but I haven’t found a website that compares the different kits each month so I’m wondering if I’d end up with a box of junk as opposed to a box full of good stuff that they send to someone else. Thanks!

Sneaky Burrito

There’s a short profile you can fill out. I don’t remember what was on it because I can’t find it again on their site. I pretty much always get a box that overlaps with Liz’s by about 3 items, and then two that are different. They must have me on some Murad list because I get a lot of that (which is fine by me).

I think Liz and I have a similar skin tone but definitely different hair color and different makeup color preferences, based on other boxes we both get. I am not a blogger but I’m getting boxes of similar value as what I see here.

Actually, of all the boxes I’ve subscribed to after learning about them on this blog, Sample Society and Lip Factory are the two most predictable for me based on the reviews here.

thank you! i appreciate the feedback, i think this will be the one i try next. 🙂

CC

I received the Kit E which has the Sonya Dakar flash facial, Borghese Fango body refinishing polish, Dermalogica age smart, Juice Beauty CC cream, and Murad T zone pore refining serum. This is my first Sample Society box and I’m definitely keeping my subscription. Thanks to your site!

Nicole

Do you know if we would get this months box if we signed up now?

Chris

You might, but I got only 3 of the same items–the eye cream was not in mine. 🙂

Sneaky Burrito

I need something to do at work. I’m haunting all my regular blogs and forums to kill time!

Anyway, I received my box yesterday. Got the Juice Beauty CC cream (happy that mine is a light shade, should work with my skin tone). Got the Flash Facial and Dermalogica dynamic skin recovery. My two items that were different were a Borghese gel makeup remover and Murad T-Zone pore refining serum. Will use everything so it’s a great value for me, too.

Chris

Same box for me too!

Amy

I got the exact same box as you only I got the darker cc cream which will work for me. I am pretty pleased this month.

What are your favorite forums? 🙂

Sneaky Burrito

Oh, most of them have nothing to do with subscription boxes. One’s about fantasy books, one’s an Amazon reviewing forum, one’s a blog about bad self-published book covers. My interests are kind of random.
