Sample Society Subscription Box Review - August

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous.

They recently had a bit of a revamp - they now have new packaging, and so far it seems like they are more makeup oriented now.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Info

The box comes with a mini-mag detailing each item and why Allure editors decided to include it in the box.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Ciate

Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Peony - 5 ml Value $8.40

Ciate Mini in Cha Cha Cha - Value $6

I really like this Too Faced Melted Lipstick - from the tube it looks like a lipgloss, but it's a full-coverage matte lip color. The peony color is a little bright for me, but I think I will buy the full size version in a more neutral lip color since I really like the formula.

This Ciate Mini is so cute and so BRIGHT NEON! I'm not sure if I can pull it off, but I think it could be a fun color for a pedicure.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Oil

Kate Somerville Dilo Oil - 3 ml Value $6.50

Jane Iredale Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara in Black Ice - 3 g Value $8.25

This Kate Somerville oil gets great reviews, and you only need 1-2 drops per application, so I think this little vial should last me at least a week! I've sampled this Jane Iredale mascara before, and it's pretty good. I would describe it as an every day mascara - not a major impact look mascara. It's lengthening but not very thickening.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - August 2014 Oribe

Oribe Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse - Purse Size (2.5 oz) Value $21.50

After seeing the spoilers, this was the product I was most excited to try. (I love Oribe dry shampoo sprays). I tried it out on my air-dried somewhat curly hair, and it gave me a little more volume, and lots of texture. I think I'll get the best results when I tried it on loose-wave styled hair to help get a more natural look. (And it has the signature Oribe scent that I love!)

Verdict: So far I've loved both of my Allure Sample Society boxes under the new direction! I paid $15 for this box and received about $50 worth of products. Even though nothing was full sized, I think the sample sizes were generous, and I really like all the new products I've tried so far.

What do you think of the August Sample Society box?

I’m so regretting not getting this box. I didn’t know Kate Summerville oil or the mascara was gonna be included. The only spoiler I liked was the Too Faced. I really missed out but I’m going for the awesome September box. 🙂

I loved my July box. This month is so-so. I’ve never tried a matte lip color and, although I like the natural color, I miss the definition on the edges of my lips and it doesn’t last very long for me. The mousse only made my hair look stiff and dirty. My hair is long and straight. It’s probably meant for shorter wavier hair or maybe I don’t know how to work with it. If anyone knows any tricks for long hair, let me know. I actually liked the color of the polish….until I tried it. Mine was transparent with a little orange hue. I has a satin finish. I looked on Ciate’s web site and it was described as ‘highly pigmented’. Has anyone else had that problem? Two coats is better, but I can still see through it. Yes, I did shake it well.

Use the polish over a solid white polish. Then you can have it be opaque with 2 coats. That’s what I did.

I’m out of control. Is there a 12 step available??

Oh no! UPS lost my box 🙁
It was in my city yesterday and suppose to be delivered today but they have no idea where it is and basically told me they can’t do anything and told me to contact the shipper! I wrote SS and hopefully I hear back great news…
I swear I have the worse luck with Mail my regular post always gets delivered to the wrong address I have the worst mailman, I have to track my packages like a hawk and know when they are delivered. My package will say delivered and I’ll check my mail and nothing is there… So I have to call the post office and they have to track it down. They don’t know why the mailman a always misdelivers my items but they always do!!

It’s almost so bad that I’ve concerned quitting ordering but I’m so addicted, lol

I wish you good luck. One time I ordered dog food online and UPS lost it (how do you lose a bag that big, I don’t know). The shipper insisted that UPS do an investigation. UPS’s investigation consisted of calling me and asking me if it had been delivered! It took nearly a month and a BBB complaint to get my money back from the company I ordered from.

Here’s hoping Sample Society comes through for you.

Usually, UPS is my favorite shipper. They deliver a couple of Amazon Prime packages a week to me with no trouble. They only messed up the one time.

Hi sneaky Buritto,

They just emailed me back. They apologized that my box had been lost and are sending me out a replacement which should arrive around the 21st. So their CS is excellent. I’m just bummed about having to wait even longer for my box 🙁 I wanted it today! Gurr stupid UPS

Blessedmommi

Considered… Not concerned. Lol gurr you autocorrect

Wow I really wish they shipped to Canada, these are all products I would actually be interested in trying!

I’m super happy with mine. The nail polish is my least favorite but I like neons on my toes so I’ll use it there. I adore the melted lipstick, the oribe, and the oil!!! The mascara is fine.

I also really loved that the product info on the card was their take, not ad promo. Like they advised to only use the oribe on dry hair, etc.

This is my favorite box.

I agree with you on the product info card. I think it’s one of the best I’ve seen in subscription boxes – it’s super helpful!

This box is my first from them and while I have too many nail colors like the one included here, the rest were right up my alley.

For all those that are really not fond of the lip color… Use lip liner and/or overlay with a gloss to modify the color. Also don’t be afraid to mix colors or try an ombré lip which is really in right now.

I have over a half a dozen coming right now, and I have to say Sample Society is reigning supreme (but to be fair my Ipsy hasn’t come in). I like boxes where if you put on all the products at once you would look somewhat put together. Same here — oil to get the face glowing, very subtle mascara, a matte neutral lip, a pop of unholy bright nail polish on the toes, and if you did what I did today, whipped my dirty polytail down, coated in dry shampoo, blew dry that out, took the straight, kind of tangled mess and applied the mouse until the mess sort of looked like waves. Called it a day. Feel French. 🙂 new subscriber and if they keep this trend of a few items give you a base head-to-toe look < will be fore life. And might never wash my waist length hair again. (loved the mouse)

I’m wearing the polish on my fingers today. Over white. With topcoat. I think I could flag down airplanes…

I saw the spoilers and it was not enough to make me sign up. I don’t care for ciate and especially the colors. I don’t use mousse. The only thing that interested me was too faced but I was kind of skeptical about the color. Kate Summerville is a good brand so I would have liked to try the oil. Great brands but products I probably wont use. I will sign up when there is a few spoilers that I like. That way if the rest are duds for me, I won’t feel like I’m out $15. This is one company that has good brands but most of the products I won’t use. I feel like I should just find one that I want and buy the full size.

i switched from glossybox to sample society because I am NOT interested in make-up. I want skin products. so of course, right when I moved over, they start adding more make-up! Oh well. does anyone have any recommendations for skincare boxes? Thank you!

I actually hated most of this box, and only wanted to keep the mascara. However, allure accidentally sent me two boxes for the price of one, so I got two mascaras and get to trade off the rest.

I love this box. I find if I put the lip color on very sparingly, that the pink looks less harsh and blends a bit better with my skin tone. I love the oil as well. The mousse was unlike any other I’ve tried. Usually I put it on when my hair is wet, but I feel like that would be a big mistake. It did a great job taming frizz and pieceing my curls together. I love wacky nail polish colors, but I haven’t tried this sample yet, so I can speak as to how it goes on. The mascara is a good everyday mascara, but not very dramatic. I’m thrilled with the sizes of the samples and the variety they send. I wish Birchbox could do this more consistently. I’ve had no issues with the payments, but I’m disappointed to hear they’re being difficult.

So I want this box. I went to sign up today and paid and it said next box will ship out sep 5th. So does that mean I paid for septembers box??? I really want these samples :/. Does anyone know?

Shelby – I’d be happy to send you my samples minus the oribe. I did use the lip gloss but ONCE – Let me know and I’ll give you my email address to send your mailing address. I honestly won’t be using any of them and would be happy to send them to you. Cheryl

If Shelly doesn’t want them I would love them Cheryl!! I am moving next month so I will sign up once the dust settles bug in truth I really wanted this box! My email is [email protected]

They had a post on fb test aug 5 was the deadline to sign up to get the aug box.

Everyone hates this box, but I love it! I think they feature great brands, as opposed to ipsy or birchbox where sometimes I don’t know any brands, thus the value is lowered for me.

cheryl

I don’t like this box at all – the lip stain is an awful color, nail polish not great, I do not like Jane Iredale mascara – the oil is something new so can’t comment, but it’s small, I am a Oribe fan, hoping this product is not drying – the box TO ME is not worth $16 – Last month was better but still not great so now $32 later I don’t really have anything I love and I need a great foundation.

After trying quite a few beauty boxes, the only one that makes sense , if you are a make-up junkie like me, is BirchBox since they give you points to actually buy full size products. I feel on these other boxes I’m wasting money for products I’m tossing in a bag. The only box I really think is a deal is PopSugar – I don’t subscribe, just gift myself after the spoilers come out. Got mine today. Not wild about the orange nail polish. Got one in a Sephora kit and have orange toes all summer already. Then came more orange in fabfitfun. Is orange the new red? I can only use Trish mascara, but it is so small to even give away. I guess everything this month is sample size except the hair mousse. I like last month better!

I used the Oribe Texture Mousse today. I have thick, wavy hair. It made my waves more defined despite the humidity.

This box seems ok even though I’m not crazy about neon orange polish (I’m white as a ghost!) but maybe I’ll like it more around Halloween. Funny the only other ciate polish I’ve gotten was also orange.

However I was missing the mascara. My irritation was a bit higher bc I had gotten a julep box the same day (a purchase from the secret shop so extra from the sub box) and that was missing an item I purchased to!! Fortunately though I received a quick response from beauty bar that they will send me a new box so that was very nice. (Still waiting to hear from julep though)

I don’t recall seeing any double charges or hold though for this, I’ll keep an eye out though.

Sneaky Burrito

I’m also white as a ghost but I decided awhile back that I would just wear whatever nail polish colors I wanted. I work in a law office and no one even says anything.

I got this box to replace IPSY. I am thrilled with the product brands and wish I had gotten July’s box as well but missed out! I hope that they include more full size type products in the future!

Unfortunately, I cancelled after this box. I had subscribed for a few months at the end of last year, and signed up again when they revamped the box. So I received last month and this month.

Only, this month they decided to charge me twice and are refusing to remedy the situation. They’re calling one an “authorization” and the other a “hold.” One of the charges went through on Monday, and here it is Friday and the second charge is still pending in my checking account, lowering my daily balance.

After numerous calls and emails to them, they told me that starting with the August box, they’ve changed the way they charge everybody, by doing what they did to me – putting BOTH an authorization (the actual pending charge) and a hold on the account (for the full amount in duplicate). They’re telling me “it should fall off in 3 days,” but it is now 5 days and it is still sitting in there. My bank told me they can leave that hold on my account for a year, LOL! Now imagine them doing that EVERY month!

The value is just not there to be charged $32 a month.

Heather

I too am interested in signing up for this, but from the comments about the charges i’m not to sure. I was browsing their FB page and came across this comment, they were responding back to question about this same issue:

“BeautyBar.com , we we just looked into this for you and saw that this was a one-off charge issue just for this month that affected some of our SS recipients, and is not the norm moving forward. The issue has since been resolved and the duplicate pending charge will drop off automatically. Hope this helps!”

Amber

Oh my goodness! I’ve never seen their Facebook page before, and I’m SHOCKED that this is happening to so many people! Wow, it is exactly the same thing that happened to me. I cannot believe they’re telling people that it is up to the bank to get rid of the charge – a charge that they put on the account, LOL!

My charge was removed today – almost two weeks after they held it.

Wendy

You should use a credit card instead of a debit card. I do not have that problem. But gas stations and hotels do the same thing. I know that gas station that I normally go to put a $125 hold once you swipe. So always use a credit card.

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

I don’t need tobuse a credit card. I’ve been using my debut cards for a million years with no issues. You can see that another commenter said it had posted twice to her credit card.

Lynn

I can see why the charge would bother you, but it is totally up to the bank to remove and all banks have different waiting periods. I don’t know why they put the initial hold on it, they did that to me too but it was almost a month before the actual billing for the box I was going to receive, so the money went back into my account within a week. It’s just like when you do a return on your credit card, sometimes it can take 14 days to actually get the money back to your card. It truly is out of Beauty Bar’s control, though.

Reply ButtonReply

s

your post prompted me to check my credit card – that is weird! i don’t like that. this is my first and possibly last month for this box. i was hoping it would be a good ipsy and birchbox replacement (cancelled both recently) but i’m not happy about the double payment at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

Sometimes I feel like I complain a lot on these blog reviews, but I think it is important to see not only what is in the box, but how the company operates. I love box reviews, but I hate when companies do shady things. Thanks for replying to my comment. I am glad I could bring this to attention, and hopefully this will be resolved int the future.

By the way, I just spoke with BeautyBar.com again, and even though they won’t do anything to remove the charge (saying it is up to the bank), the gentleman was much nicer and more helpful than the last couple I interacted with. I LOVE the familyhood sites, and order on a daily (sometimes twice a day) basis, and they NEVER put two holds on my account. So this is specific to the Sample Society box.

Sneaky Burrito

I’m wearing the lipstick today. Jury’s still out, though, as I’ve only had it on for about an hour. I put it on over some Too Faced lip primer I got in another box.

I’m totally putting the nail polish on my fingernails this weekend. I used to try to stick to “normal” nail colors but I’ve done a 180 and now I’ll wear just about anything (right now bright purple Avni from Julep).

Will try the mascara and fragrance when I get around to it. I think the Oribe product would actually work fairly well with my hair but that’s not the sort of thing you experiment with for the first time before work in the morning because what if it doesn’t look right or you mess up the application? Will try that over the weekend.

This new Sample Society is just so different from before. I feel like the value is a lot higher and I like the variety of products.

Hi, Sneaky – I just wanted to make sure you knew the oil is not a fragrance, but rather a face oil, like a serum. The packaging recommends mixing it two drops into your usual facial moisturizer. I definitely agree with the suggestion – oils always work best when mixed into moisturizer!
