This is the 4th Nina Garcia Quarterly subscription box. It was delayed for 2 months, but finally shipped last week!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Letter

Each Quarterly box comes with a letter from the curator describing the theme for that quarter, and background on every item they selected. I always read these letters after I unbox everything (I probably should do it the other way around), but I think they are excellent for giving context on each of the items selected for the box.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Purse

Deux Lux Joplin Circle Messenger in Mink – $75

This is my first Deux Lux bag and I am so impressed with the quality of the materials. I think it's the softest vegan leather purse I've ever come across!

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Strap

I also like that it has an adjustable strap so you can get the perfect length. And the lining is gorgeous:

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Lining

The only thing it is missing is a pocket or little zipper compartment in the purse. It's a pretty small purse in general though, so that's OK.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Ballin

BALLIN Paris Beanie – $40

The notorious Ballin' Paris beanie! I know this wasn't a hit with a lot of subscribers from the spoiler comments I read, but I kind of like it! It's super soft and cozy, and fits really well. Normally most fitted caps don't work on my head (The Joie POPSUGAR Limited Edition box hat is one that didn't work), but this one fits me perfectly. I don't think I'm cool enough to rock this look in public, but it's my new wear-around-the-house hat.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 RGB

NUDE Skincare ProGenius™ Treatment Oil – .5 oz Value $39

RGB Nail Polish in Deep – Value $18

This NUDE Treatment Oil serum is the spoiler item I was most excited to try. It's free of all the types of ingredients I try to avoid when I can, and it gets great reviews. I've only used it for two days now, so I can' report any dramatic effects, but I like how quickly it absorbs.

The RGB nail polish is great fall color too - I don't get that excited about nail polish in subscription boxes lately, but I think it's a good addition to the box.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Pantone

Pantone Coffee Mug – Value $16

I'm not sure how many color variations there are of this mug in the box - but I want them all! I'll probably try to swap for a few if I can.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Laundress

The Laundress Sweater Comb – $18

Based on the reviews I've found of this sweater comb, it is the best sweater comb ever. I like everything I've tried so far from The Laundress, so I know this will come in handy for winter clothing.

Nina Garcia Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NGQ04 Earrings

Rue Gembon Autumn Silver Earrings - Value $55

This is another item that had a few variations - and I'm really happy with the earrings I got. The pearl stud goes on the front of your earlobe, and the silver piece hangs from the back. It's a really beautiful and simple design, and I love that it uses pearls in a way that doesn't feel too formal for me.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $260. I think that's great for a $100 box, but when I first saw the spoilers I must admit I was surprised there weren't more items since the past two boxes have had a lot of items and a total value of over $400 each. Those boxes aside, I think this is still a good box from Nina. I was originally skeptical from the spoilers, but now that I have the box in my hands I will actually use every single item.

I'm guessing I'm in the minority of subscribers who are a fan of this box though - what did you think of the box?

This was my third of her boxes and based on it and the last one, I sent it back and canceled my subscription. (Good thing since I doubled up on yours, Liz!) ;o) Honestly though, as noted in my review, I didn’t care for most of my items so the value didn’t justify the high cost. I wish I would have gotten your version of the ear jackets, mine were clunky looking. I also got the navy/fushica version of the purse…also not very appealing. Too, if you look at their actual website, both versions of the purses have a metallic strap/zipper which actually, to me, ups the look and better justifies the higher price tag. I did at least get the mug in a Crocus/lavender color and I love The Laundress products. But neither justified keeping the box. Bummer.

Got rid of this crap sub and got the MSA (today finally!) and Rosario instead.

I was so disappointed with this box. The purse looks cheap, there is no way I will every wear that beanie, the earrings broke already , the coffee mug says 2013 on it .The only thing I will use is the nail polish. I will not be ordering this again. It was one of the worse boxes I have ever received .It ranks up there with the Sept / Oct box from Pop Sugar . Even my husband said it was a waste of money and he could careless what is in it he just knows I get excited when my boxes come. I was so excited when the box arrived and so disappointed after opening it. I had no idea we can return the boxes ?

2014 is the Pantone shade number, not the year. Color of the year in 2013 was emerald green.

Has everyone received their Nina boxes? I am showing on my account that I’ve been billed on 11/19 $100 (presume that’s Nina) and 11/26 (assume that’s Paleo). But neither have shown up yet (although I don’t exoect the 11/26). Does Quarterly send on tracking emails that I must have missed? I’ve been searching my emails but cannot find any. And I cannot find a place on their website where a tracking # might be. Any thoughts? I’ve sent two emails to s customerservice in 2 days and haven’t received a response.

This is was my first NG box and to justify it I cancelled a couple of other boxes. I must say I’m loving my first box! The only thing was I wish my bag came in the same color that you received but I will still use this one. My earrings are completely different but I like them.

I like the sweater comb, the coffee mug, the serum, nail polish, and the earrings. I dislike fringe (but the soft vegan ‘leather’ and shape of the purse is otherwise awesome) and the hat. I have no business wearing a “Ballin'” hat at my age and in my profession. I agree with the above comments about the age crisis occurring in this box especially. Where is the fashion forward styling?

Also, is there anywhere to trade items online such as a facebook group?

Speaking for myself only:

This is my third Nina Garcia box. I signed up for the Nina Garcia box because she exudes classy, chic, and timeless with a touch of trend. My thinking was that the box would include items that would represent her personal style and favorite products.

However, I am finding that the feel of the box is becoming a little too young for me (I’m 39) AND I feel most certain that Nina would not be caught wearing or using some of the items in these boxes.

It just isn’t the Ballin’ beanie hat or the fringe purse that I am thinking about. It was the flat brim baseball cap, the plastic fringe clutch, the plastic shoe, the apple green nail polish, the poster that reminded me of the pages of a college design project. While these items might be on trend for a reader of Marie Claire, they are not on trend for someone my age. No matter how hard I try, there is no way I could pull these things off.

With this being said, I have found that many of the beauty products have been perfect for me and age appropriate. I have already purchased more of the philosophy serum, the shave gel, the bar soap, and the hair conditioner.

Its just that I wish I could use the fashion items and be just as excited about them as I am about the beauty products. That’s what is bugging me. I would like to wear what Nina wears. I don’t necessarily want to be her twin but I would like a touch of her style. I would like to have something fashionable and feel confident that I won’t look foolish.

I am thinking that maybe, just maybe, this box is bring spread to thin to cover a wide range of ages. The result is slightly confused with a Ballin’ beanie hat and an age defying serum in the same box!!!!

My initial reaction when I saw the spoiler with the beanie, I thought for certain I would unsubscribe. After I received the box, I have to be honest and say that I am on the fence. While I really liked the coffee mug (in purple), the earrings are really pretty, the sweater comb was much needed, the serum is nice, the fringe bag (a little young for me but so soft I might have to give it a try). It’s that beanie and the other items from the other boxes that are dominating and taking away from the experience that is supposed to be a Nina Garcia box.

One last thing and I am done. Did anyone else miss something that smelled fantastic when you opened the box? (The bar of soap in the second box and the candle in the third box).

I totally agree, great post! I have 3 daughters ages 8 to 16 ( with a ten year old son thrown in the mix) and I feel like this box works great for me as a family, but not so much as an individual. My 16 year old daughter will love the purse because she loves fashion statements and the Ballin beanie is perfect for my 13 year old daughter who plays basketball ~ she just posted a picture of herself on instagram playing basketball and titled it “Ballin”. Plus, she also fell in love with Paris when we vacationed there last December. However, it’s really ironic how this box relates to me in terms of my family’s experiences. If I had to use everything for my own personal use ~ NO WAY!

I’m so disappointed in this box and am returning. I do not want to cancel yet, but if the next box is similar to this, I am out. I do not have my ears pierced nor would I gift the ones I recieved (moon shaped with pearl in the middle). I recieved the navy purse and its not my thing, the beenie is definitely not me, and the last thing I need is a new mug. I thought this box would contain cozy winter items- I was hoping for a scarf or some cool gloves.

Reply ButtonReply

margary

I’d like to return my box as well, but don’t see how to do that from their website. Do you know how to do this? Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Lindsy

I contacted quarterly and expressed my disappointment. They replied via email and said they’d send me a return label. I haven’t received it yet, but I can let you know.

Cathleen

I also like this box more in person than I did in the spoilers – if nothing else, it gives me some good gifts for my young cousin. I keep going back and forth on whether or not to keep the subscription. The last two boxes really haven’t wowed me that much but I seem to have this thing for subscription boxes!

I cancelled the Rosario box, but keep waffling about that too….

Nancy in TX

I got my box today and I’m very pleased with it. I received the same box as Liz but with an Orchid color mug.
I don’t see where anyone has mentioned this but forgive if it has. Couldn’t these dangly earrings be worn with the silver bar hanging in front and pearl in back of the ear? As in, two earrings in 1? I actually like these a lot better than I thought I would.

Reply ButtonReply

Eliz

The back posts of the earrings I got just slide right off, and the way they’re designed (the silver faux diamond ones) I can’t just replace the backing. Does anyone know if I can complain about one item and get a replacement or something? If not, I may have to return the whole box… I was on the fence anyway but this is just ridiculous. Thanks for any input!

I have to say when I saw the spoilers for this box, I was a little like…ugh. Now that I have it, I am way more excited. I knew I would like the oil and the nail polish but I also recieved the bag in Mink and love it! The mug is actually really cool looking, it was one item I was originally unsure of. My 20 year old daughter and her boyfriend doing lighting and sound for shows here in Montana and the Ballin beanie, which is not for this 40 year old lady is going to be great for the show they are doing tonight (temp here is going to -15*) I also am happy to have the sweater comb, I live in layers of sweaters all winter, lol. I am super jealous of your earnings, Liz! I recieved a pair of rose gold (I think they are called cage earings) which are beautiful and super sparkling but dont seem to fit my ears quite right. I also almost exclusively wear silver jewelry but the value on the website was $65, so I may gift them or sell them. I do wish there had been more items, that is always nice when there are bunches of items to unwrap! Overall I am quite happy with this box.

Reply ButtonReply

Elle Dee

I was excited about the earrings and purse, but I’m completely disappointed in the earrings. They’re just regular post earrings with fake diamonds, cheapie earrings I could pick up at the dollar general.
And the beanie is stupid.

Reply ButtonReply

Vianny

I might be the minority but I seem all her boxes and I have no idea what the big deal is. I personally wouldn’t spend that kind of money on her box, guessing because I’m not the target audience… Who knows.

Reply ButtonReply

Jordan

I totally agree! I don’t really see Nina being excited by anything in this box except maybe the serum and the nail polish. Everything seems kind of tacky to me. When I think of Nina, I think of things that would be totally luxurious, like the best of the best…and maybe a little innovative. I do not think of a fake-leather bag with tentacles hanging off of it.

Reply ButtonReply

Laurie

+1 for tentacles.

KB

I would think that she would include items that have been featured in the pages of Marie Claire or an item that she is gifting to friends for xmas but all these things just seem random and not personal.

PA Anna

I can see how it comes to together when I looked at it with an objective eye. It makes me think of urban/city chic. Thank you for writing that much detail about the bag. It was interesting to read. This box isn’t for me. I did resign up for the spring box.

Reply ButtonReply

Chris

I got a mint green Pantone mug, the navy (cranberry) purse, and very sparkly silver earrings (looks like these: http://www.ramblingsofasuburbanmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/IMG_3575.jpg). Hoping to swap the bag for the grey one but it’s cute enough that if I can’t, I’ll still keep the navy, even though I wasn’t sure of the fringe when I saw the spoilers. Certainly I don’t own anything like it and it’s a nice mix of trendy and classic. Oh, and the controversial hat! (Thanks to the commenters above who explain “ballin” — now I feel better, haha!) I was very skeptical when I heard about it but, as Liz noted, it truly is soft and cozy and even though I thought I couldn’t possibly wear it out, I have done so a couple of times already and it gives me a little smile.

I’ve been more excited by the other Nina boxes, especially because they had way more items. But honestly I plan to keep all of these items, whereas I think I ultimately swapped 75% of the items in the last box. A bummer that so many are disappointed and hope that doesn’t discourage her from continuing with Quarterly. For those who have their return label ready, I suggest at least peeking inside and checking it out before shipping back.

Reply ButtonReply

Amanda

I loved this box. And I’m not afraid to admit that I wore my Ballin beanie in public the last two days. It’s cute and comfy! I actually think it’s fun to get these on trend items (like the fringe purse or the beanie) and experiment with pulling together outfits where I still look well styled.

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

Yep! Me too. LOVE the box. It’s a great way to try on trend goods that I wouldn’t buy on my own. Whatever I decide I can’t use goes to my daughter. But I’m feeling like I’m keeping all this stuff. Even the Ballin beanie!

Reply ButtonReply

Chris

I agree whole-heartedly!

Reply ButtonReply

Jen K

Where’s the sparkles?

Reply ButtonReply

Amanda

The earrings according to the curator letter. They’re fabulous as they’re trendy but also classy. I got the same variation as Liz!

Reply ButtonReply

Tara B

Why earrings? Some people cant wear earrings. I did not get the same one as Liz. my pair look very cheap. I cant wear them anyways. I will be returning the box. 🙁

Crystal

This looks better on actual reviews than it did on the initial full spoilers but whether or not I return it will fully depend on the variations that I receive in the bag, earrings and mug. The nail polish can be gifted and the hat will make an excellent gag gift in my husband’s stocking.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

I can understand mixed feelings about this box. Especially at a $100 price point.
It has a very young vibe! Fringe is definitely on trend, especially in bohemian stores like Free People. “Ballin” is word frequently put on clothing and is in no way offensive in modern day slang, as some people have suggested. Everything else is definitely all age appropriate.
So I can understand why some people hate this box while other people love it. Reminds of the one box (can’t remember what it was) that had the curse words on stickers and whatnot. Very on trend, looked like stuff pulled straight out of Urban Outfitters. Yet not age appropriate for a vast majority of subscribers.

Reply ButtonReply

Amanda

I feel she has a real mix of items and has done that from the beginning. That first box had the leather studded cuff which seemed for a younger crowd and then the faux fur collar which seemed very mature. In this box we see the earrings as being more subdued and the Ballin beanie as being youthful. I must fall right in the middle because the only item I haven’t been able to wear is that hat in the summer box. Largely because I can’t stand baseball hats with the flat brim. (What is up with those things?) I’m in my mid-30’s.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

Yeah flat brims are one style that I never liked. I only see wannabe “gangsters” and skateboarder teens wearing that style of hat usually. But to each their own lol

Brandy @ MommySplurge

it’s fancy box that does that.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

Ah yes, fancy! That box reminds me of the beanie here. Some hate and some love.

Zerlyn

I’m looking for another mug too, to make it a set. It is pretty cute.

Reply ButtonReply

Helen

I have a few Deux Lux bags and the messenger sizes all have really nice, heavy sinuous chains rather than leather straps. I noticed that some subscribers received bags with chains and some the straps.
When my NG box finally arrives, that’s probably going to be the deal breaker for me, whether I return it or not.
I was excited to see the Nude serum spoiler, but the Ballin hat is an insult to adult women.

Reply ButtonReply

Judy

Quarterly is slacking big time in the delay dept. i canceled this box after the spoilers and was looking fwd to MSA02 and the RDawson box in Nov. Both are delayed.. Got the notice that Dawson box is delayed and thy gave a “spoiler”. Still a lil disappointed : We wanted to give you a quick update regarding your Rosario Dawson box. #18902 will ship early December and arrive by the 25th to US subscribers.

To hold you over until then, here’s an exclusive spoiler: one of the items included is from the brand Under Armour! Happy unboxing!

Gee, I subscribed to her Box in October and have emailed them three times and not heard anything. What the heck? Unhappy. It’s a box with an advent calendar theme and now we won’t get it until *maybe* Christmas?!?! I intended to use some of the items as gifts and now I can’t do that until I wait until the last minute and hope they fit someone I know OR decide not to use them and spend more money. Great. I’m not impressed. Time to leave an angry measage on their facebook page since politely worded emails get no response.

Reply ButtonReply

Crystal

They actually have really responsive customer service. Make sure that when you are emailing them it’s to a .co instead of .com Hope that helps!

Crystal

I received the same email regarding Rosario’s box. I’m on the fence about waiting it out or just canceling. The whole premise of the box was that it was supposed to be an advent box and we’d have a little goodie to enjoy on each day leading up to Christmas.

Reply ButtonReply

Judy

Exactly! I was looking fwd to having it as an advent calendar & yet still have the opportunity to gift a few items. The e-mail was sent out yesterday.

jessica edwards

My thoughts exactly! I’m on the fence for canceling, it was going to be a little Christmas gift to myself this year, with something new every day. This kind of ruins it being late and all…

Sheryl

I never received an email about Rosario’s box. When did they send it? May I ask what it said?

Susan B.

Uggghhh. I’m not even going to open mine when it arrives. I’ve already got my return label and it’s going right back to Quarterly.

So far, I am thinking my swaps will be sweater comb, nail polish, and that damnable beanie. I don’t care how well the beanie is made, but I am not putting something on my head that smacks of some sort of sexual innuendo. Nna really ought to stay away from headgear. The hat in her last box was just plain ugly!!

Reply ButtonReply

Lana

“Ballin'” is slang that actually comes from basketball, not from anything sexual. It started when someone was playing well they would be said to be “Ballin'”, and then it seeped into other situations.

Reply ButtonReply

Allie

FWIW, I understand your feelings about the beanie. The way the word “ballin” is used may have changed and some people may be aware of the current positive connotation of the word, but I’m not one of them. If you and I have a different reaction to the term upon seeing it, it’s likely we aren’t the only ones and I wouldn’t want to risk wearing it in public either. This is strictly my personal taste, but I also think the beanie is just tacky, and a generic looking beanie with slang on it is not my idea of fashionable – it’s my idea of what someone might wear to keep their head warm while raking leaves. Items like that are useful but not what I’d expect in a box from Nina Garcia.

I’ve been thinking of signing up for her box since the first one, but my interest has been waning more and more. This box seems like it lacks any cohesive theme whatsoever and is mostly just random stuff. Again – just my opinion.

I did sign up for the Rosario Dawson box and still have high hopes for it even though it has been delayed.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

Hmm… of course you are allowed to feel however you want, but “ballin” is just a slang word for awesome, wealthy, rad, or “super fly” lol. It’s a positive term, not ever used in a sexual way in today’s slang. I think hardly anyone would look at it and feel offended and associate it with a sexual innuendo.
For instance, a lot of times I’ll drive by a restaurant and say, “Wow they’re ballin outta control!” if the place is packed.

Reply ButtonReply

Chris

Thanks for enlightening those of us who didn’t know its meaning! However, there seem to be quite a few of us who aren’t young’uns anymore who assumed some sexual innuendo or some pejorative meaning in that term so wearing it out incurs the risk that someone take offense. That said, I’ve worn my beanie out a few times so I’m apparently okay with offending some strangers! 🙂

Amanda H.

Yeah, I knew that and was wondering why some people were thinking it had some sexual meaning behind it!

Amanda

When I first saw it the font made me think it was a whiskey ad, then I actually read the words and I thought it was awesome. And definitely not offensive.

emiie

Thank you for the explanation! I was googling for what that word meant, lol.
