Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Bag

Blush Mystery Beauty Box is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box from Blush.com. I’ve been very impressed with this subscription in general because of the value (usually over $100), the brands (typically at least a few high-end  lines), and the size of the items (everything is usually full sized or deluxe sized).

FYI – Originally this subscription sent out a lot of makeup, but lately it seems like hair products and skincare products are the most common.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Items

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Pixi

Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in True Teal - FULL SIZE! Value $12

Paula's Choice Shine Stopper Instant Matte Finish - FULL SIZE! Value $22

(One thing to note about this box - it didn't come with a info card, so I'm not sure how much variation there will be in makeup shades or even products).

I like Pixi makeup a lot, and while I have a lot of eyeliners, I don't think I have a deep teal shade like this one!

The Paula's Choice Shine Stopped is new to me, and I hope it works well because I like that it is fragrance and dye free. I just tried it out this morning over my moisturizer and under my powder foundation - so far it seems good as a primer.

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Clean

Lip Fusion Plump + Shine Lipstick in Babydoll - 1.2 g Value $9.60

CLEAN Shower Fresh Eau de Parfum (Rollerball) - 5 ml Value $7

This Lip Fusion lipstick went on somewhat sheer - which I liked. It claims to plump your lips, but I don't really believe lip-plumping claims from lip products. It is very moisturizing, and has a little bit of a tingling cooling finish (nothing too annoying) so I think it has some minor lip-appearance effects - like any other moisturizing lip product would have.

The Clean Shower Fresh fragrance definitely has a "clean" scent to it. I am terrible at describing fragrances, so I'll steal the fragrance notes Sephora listed: Lemon, Mandarin, Orange, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley (Muguet), Orange Blossom, Sheer Woods, Musk.

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Cargo

NUXE Multi-Purpose Dry Oil for Face, Body, Hair - .33 oz Value $7.80

Cargo Eye Shadow in OZ - FULL SIZE! Value $16

I received this NUXE Shimmer OIl as a Birchbox sample a year or two ago and loved it for the summer - it adds just the right amount of shimmer to your skin and I love using it on my legs. (In the bottle it looks pretty sparkly, but applied it just looks like an all-over shimmer/glow).

I was happy to see a full-sized pressed powder eyeshadow in the box, but unfortunately for me this yellow-gold is not a flattering shade. (I love metallics for eyeshadows, but prefer cooler colors).

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Avene

Klorane Shampoo with Desert Date - FULL SIZE! Value $15

Eau Thermal Avene Cleanance Gel - FULL SIZE! Value $20

I like this shampoo, but we received the exact same shampoo in the October Blush Mystery Beauty Box, so getting an identical repeat two months apart seems a little weird to me..

I haven't tried the Avene cleanser yet, but it is supposed to be a great soap-free cleanser for sensitive skin.

Blush Mystery Beauty Box Review – December 2014 Ahava

Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo - 1 oz Value $3.75

Ahava Deadsea Water Mineral Body Lotion - 1.3 oz (Travel Size) Value $10

This shampoo is supposed to "promote micro-circulation to stimulate healthy follicles." I'd say this sample has two full uses in it, so hopefully that's enough to see if it actually does anything different to my hair.

I think $10 price for a 1.3 oz travel size lotion is a little inflated, but I do like Ahava lotions, so considering I paid $25 total for this bag, that is fine with me.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $123 - almost $100 over the $25 a month cost. I'm very impressed with the value, and I'm excited about quite a few of the products, but something about this month just feels off to me. Maybe it is the lack of info card, but the curation feels a little random. (The repeat shampoo didn't help either). On the plus side, I think they have a good variety of makeup, skincare, and haircare products).

What did you think of the December Blush Mystery Beauty Box?

I know! As if requiring us to spend another $40 out of pocket is a real benefit to us! Since the printed information card has that product listed on it, it’s safe to assume everyone got the repeat.

I got an email today saying they were deeply sorry that it appeared that SOME subs contained a dup from the previous month and it had a 10 off 50 coupon. First I don’t like that they make it sound like an unintentional occurrence and second I don’t wanna spend another 50 bucks. Just annoying.

…it makes absolutely no sense that they would do that. What the heck are they thinking?

I’ve noticed that they aren’t online nearly as much as the other beauty box companies. They don’t update their social media even monthly in many cases. I know they cater to a slightly older demographic than say, Ipsy, with all the skin creams and what-not, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t on here wanting legit answers.

Just received January’s and there’s another Avene Cleanance Gel in it! UGH.

I didn’t like my box either 🙁 I’m giving it another try but if next months is bad, I’ll have to reconsider. The boxes have been really amazing so far. I hope they can turn it around.

I’ve been subbed to Blush since August. I loved August, October, November, December.

September and January were pretty much bleh though.

I guess one mediocre box every 4 months or so for me is still worth subbing. You can’t win them all!

Lisa

Just saw the January 2015 sneak peek and apparently the Avene facial cleanser is the featured product of the month. I love Blush, but the repeats are getting ridiculous. Why would they make the featured product an item we just got last month? I unsubbed right away. The value is always there, but I just feel like other boxes offer way more variety and the same $100+ value.

Just got my January box today. So.not.impressed.

I got mine today too. It wasn’t my favorite from them, but I like the items I got. I really liked the Avene cleanser from last month and decided to buy it when I was out. Now I don’t have to. I love the Cargo lipglosses and have quite a few but not that color, and the lipstick so far has a really nice feel and long wear. We didn’t have any hair products this month but a lot of pretty nice skin items.

It was a win for me, but I like a lot of things and I am not very picky. As long as the value still stays there, I’ll keep subscribing.

The only thing I absolutely can’t use is the BB cream since it is too dark for my skin.

Sara

I just saw that too, wth, it’s not even getting the same cleanser two months later, it’s the next freaking month. How strange, I love Blush, I hope they’re not going under or something. I might have to be unsubbing after this box and I hate to, but if it’s all repeats again, it’s not worth it.

I said the same thing last month with the duplicate shampoo.

Someone brought up that they are owned by Target, but… that doesn’t mean Target won’t try and shut them down if they aren’t performing as planned.

Meagan

Inoticed they have started responding to us on the YouTube page at least.

I bet there will be quite a few who drop the sub after this. I love shampoo and face cleaner, and now ihave extras, but this is just disappointing.

I just signed up for this subscription. I received everything that is shown in this review. Everything arrived intact without any missing/broken products. Great value for the price I paid, I’m very happy with my first shipment. I cannot wait to try all of these products! Thanks for the very helpful review!

Blush was one of my first beauty subs. Enjoy!

I *LOVED* this particular box (mine was identical to yours) and was actually thrilled with the repeat shampoo. I think my mum will love it just as much as I do, so she’ll be getting it.
The lipstick was meh to me and broke on the second use. I always find that irritating.

Finally got my blush bag and I absolutely love love EVERYTHING I received!! Best yet! I was so freakin happy, well worth the money! Only thing is the blue “Avenue” cleanser for face or body??

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

It’s for face☺️

Melissa

Thanks! I thought so but wasn’t sure! Appreciate it!

Liz

I love the Avene face wash; first got it in birchbox; that alone got me to sign up for this box! Maybe a lot of people like the shampoo and that’s why they repeated it. I would take a repeat of the face wash in a heartbeat. The cost of the box alone is worth that.

I love Blush and love pretty much everything I get from them, but I’m getting a little concerned for a few reasons. I’m hoping they aren’t going out of business.

1. They are sending a lot of repeat items lately (the shampoo this month coupled with another shampoo in the same box is really strange), the eye cream a couple of months ago, etc…

2. Their online presence has almost completely dried up, which seems really strange for an online business. They haven’t updated any social media in a few months other than a video for the December box on Youtube.

3. My box was about a week later than normal this month.

4. They didn’t post their normal information on the website for the box.

5. They didn’t include a card with this month.

Is anyone else concerned about this? They are my favorite sub, even if I get some repeats of great products (there are worse problems to have). I’ve complained about it though, and nobody seems to be answering me about it from Blush.

They are owned by Target.

Meagan

I know they are owned by Target, but that doesn’t mean the business is going well. I’ve seen a lot of big companies buy smaller companies and then close the doors on them.

I really don’t want that to happen here.

How come I always seem to get my boxes after everyone else? Still no Blush, nor Ipsy, nor Citrus Lane, nor any of the others….maybe I should just move to Alaska since Houston seems to be too far away for USPS…

Reply ButtonReply

Lyla

I live in Houston and I haven’t received my Ipsy or Citrus Lane box(es) either, so you’re not alone! I joined Citrus Lane for my son when they had the Santa box deal and I don’t even think that box has shipped yet….kinda would be nice to have that before Christmas. 🙁

Jennifer

Haha, I live in Houston too. I usually get My boxes mid month or towards the end. Guess our location is just last on the list.

I live in Tomball, I feel y’all’s pain!

I received the teal eye liner and it is so smooth and creamy and I like the packaging. This has to be one of my favorite new eye liners. I wore it all day yesterday and I am really impressed. I used the Avene non soap facial cleanser and the scent is really good and it cleans really well, my eye makeup was removed well too. I still prefer my own brands of soap cleansers but will definitely use it. The Nuxe oil I use on my neck/chest area and sometime I will try it on my hands but it is wonderful. It is one of Nuxe best sellers.

The eye shadow for me was neutral. I loved it. It did not come off as yellow but more of a nude shimmer or highligter. The packaging also nice.

The shampoo items I havent tried but have great ratings. All the shampoo month after month is getting boring. Too much shampoo, enough to last years. Why not more styling, heat protectors or some conditioner. That along with no anti aging products this month gives them 4 stars from me.

I resubbed using the 24hr $10 off code and free gift making the entire box $14.95. Plus free gift. I cannot complain. Huge deal. Beats Sample Society with the code or without the code. Plus two sample packs and the free gift was worth like $10

I got the exact same box…did think it was odd there was no card. If anyone is interested in the cargo shadow or the pixi teal eyeliner, I’ll never use either….I’m interested in trading either or both…. I wish the cargo eye shadow was any other shade, I like the brand but this color won’t work for me at all…..neither does teal eyeliner though it’s a gorgeous color. I was very excited to try the Paulas choice and I like the avene cleanser a lot so those two items made the bag worth it for me….

Amanda

I am interested in the teal eyeliner and cargo eyeshadow! Email me: [email protected]

I thought the Blush bag felt off this month too, I didn’t like how there wasn’t an info card I just thought mine was missing it. But I actually kinda liked everything but the shampoo since we just got it. I don’t like how last month they had a repeat hair product and this month was the exact same shampoo we got 2 months ago. But I LOVED the Clean perfume, it’s so fresh and clean smelling. I liked the hand lotion and makeup products. The Cargo color was weird, but it wasn’t really yellow when I put it on it’s more of a yellow gold or something. I do like it, I love Pixi and the eyeliner is a gorgeous teal. Not everything was full size but we got so many items, I really liked this month’s bag.

Britney

I tried the yellow eye shadow on my eye lids, it was… weird. So, I’ll attempt use it as banana powder since I just ran out. We’ll see how that works.

Reply ButtonReply

AnnD

What is a banana powder?

Reply ButtonReply

Britney

Primarily used for contouring and some tone correction. I love it… Definitely worth googling!

EC

I’m curious, too. What the heck is a banana powder?

Stephanie

Wow that bag looks amazing. I was on their website last week looking at the December spoilers. I haven’t subscribed yet but would like to. Anyone have a promo code I could use? I can’t seem to find one…Thank you

The repeat on the shampoo REALLY bothered me. Getting more than one shampoo seems redundant. I am excited for the rest of the box and the value. I wish they would explain themselves.

Reply ButtonReply

Lynne

I received the same exact box as you Liz. Not excited about a repeat of the shampoo as I’ve gotten a lot of it in the Blush mystery boxes. However, the Avene face gel/wash is really great! It takes the tiniest amount and lasts forever. I have repurchased this before and I’m happy to have it again.

Audra

I just subscribed solely for the Avene for my daughter as her skin has stayed clear since she began using this; birchbox is out of stock and I was just now going to look elsewhere for it. I really hope they send me the same box! If so, everything else will just be a bonus!

Alice H

I will be happy to swap for the klorane shampoo to anyone who doesn’t want it.

Reply ButtonReply

Vanessa

I got the same variation as Liz too. Wow, I cannot believe how many items were in this bag. Really good value. I also am a new subscriber so I don’t have any repeats. I really like this bag, especially the Paula’s Choice product. The other items are fun too. I love Klorane and I am interested to try the Avene facial cleanser, its a huge bottle. I agree the curation is not really there but for the price and the amount of items you get, it really doesn’t matter to me.

Reply ButtonReply

CindyLouWho68

I also received the same items in the same colors… I tought we got this shampoo a short time ago. I actually canceled my sub lady month, I’ve got so much body care, cosmetics, etc… But i saw someobes post for $10 off with code and I just couldn’t resist. This sub was always one of my faves.

Oh! I signed up for the MSA box, unfortunately I missed out on the Winter box, but I’m looking forward to March.

Thanks Liz for all you do!

Reply ButtonReply

WendyW

I received exactly the same box except my eye liner was Black Cocoa which I’m fine with since I received the teal liner a few months ago in another box. I was surprised to see the same shampoo (which I haven’t even used the first one) and the eye shadow is not a color I would wear. Over all I guess I am happy with it…the number of products that came is amazing…but meh. lol I don’t know. This is the 4th bag I’ve gotten and while the value has been really good, to me it just feels like a bunch of crap thrown into a bag.

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabet

Really liked this box but just recently subscribed again, so can’t complain about the repeats. The eyeshadow color works great for my tone & excited about trying the Klorane shampoo. Weaning myself off of WEN & searching for a new shampoo, these samples & full sizes are great for finding my new goto shampoo.

Reply ButtonReply

lesley

I got the exact same box, so not sure if there are any varieties. I also thought the curation was a bit odd with this box, two shampoos in one box? One that we just got (and I haven’t had a chance to use). I was very pleased with the value of the box and the number of items included.
