Sample Society Subscription Box Review - December 2014 Box

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous.

They recently had a bit of a revamp – I’m not sure what the changes are anymore besides the packaging.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - December 2014 Butter

Butter London Lippy Tinted Lip Balm in Teddy Box – FULL SIZE! Value $20

Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base in Nude Radiance – 5 ml Value $8

From the card, it looks like the color subscribers will get of this Butter London Lippy will vary box-to-box. Even though it definitely looks like a lipstick, it goes on like a sheer tinted balm. I'm happy with the color I received too.

This Luminous Fluid Base goes on very sheer and there is no shimmer particles that I could see. Instead it's more of a dewy-skin look. That's fine with me! I tried it only on makeup-free skin so far, but most of the reviews I've read of this product recommend mixing it with your liquid foundation.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - December 2014 RGB

RGB nail polish in Oxblood – FULL SIZE! Value $18

Crabtree & Evelyn Ultra – Moisturizing Hand Therapy in Verbena and Lavender –25 g Value $8

I already received a very similar shade of RGB polish in the Nina Garcia Quarterly box, so this one is getting swapped or gifted!

(Subscribers will receive this hand cream in either Verbena and Lavender or La Source). I liked the formula of this hand cream, but unfortunately the scent wasn't for me.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review - December 2014 Estee Lauder

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Gel - 5 ml Value $19

I'm all about getting pricey eye creams in subscription boxes, so I'm excited to give this one a try. (I hope it lasts long enough to actually see results!)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $73 - great for the $15 cost. And I'm happy with the sizes of all the beauty products included. What an improvement over last month's box! What do you think of the December Sample Society box?

I’d like to sign up for this and since the promo code, Amazon5, has expired. Is there a new promo code I can use?

They screwed up on the color of the Butter lipstick I was supposed to get. On my order page it says ‘Abbey Rose’, but I was sent ‘Mush’ which is really orange. I wish I had gotten the correct color, was looking forward to that. Grrrrr.

I think everyone without a public facing blog got Mush. I got Mush, then ordered a second box to try for another color and got Mush again. Not exactly thrilled about it… all the blogs I saw got pretty pinks and reds… in fact I came here to ask if anyone else got stuck with Mush…

I wish I had received a different color in the Butter lipstick/balm. The color I got is on the orangey side and looks so so. Also the scent of lotion that I got…I wish I got the other one! Kinda hate when things in the boxes are different like that.

This is one of my favorite boxes and I get quite a few. Even though a lot of people thought the last box was a disappointment… I really didn’t think it was all that bad. I have (re) subscribed since they revamped like 5 months ago and the price/value, brands and size of the samples are honestly pretty great. This box was the best so far. I looove the nail polish color (full size!) my husband even complimented and he has probably noticed my nail polish only twice in 5 years. The eye cream is one of my favorites, love the burberry highlighter, and even though I don’t especially like most scented hand creams this one smelled delish and was asked by a couple of co-workers what it was. I love and subscribe to Allure magazine and feel like they have access to the best/ quality brands. I was not even tempted to cancel after last month even though a lot of people did and soooo glad I didn’t. It really does feel like they listen customer feedback and I can only see the quality remaining the same if not getting even better. I wish I could say the same for a lot of my other subs *cough birchbox* cough cough *ispy haaha

I love Sample Society ever since I signed up. Yes, some boxes are better than others but always remember “good things come to those who wait”. Sample Society delivered a fabulous box this month. Loved every product!!!

This looks like a nice box, and I would have been happy to receive it if I hadn’t cancelled after two TERRIBLE months of almost completely useless product samples. I just don’t trust Sample Society, and don’t think I’ll be resubscribing any time soon.

The hand cream smelled strong and awful to me, also made me itch and that’s a first for me.

The butter london to me was like lipstick. It was simi sheer with a barely a pink hue. I prefer my pixi lip balm from birchbox which is more silky and moisturizing.

The above items were why I subbed but not a fan.

Now to the eye cream, it’s amazing!!! It feels like silk and glides on like butter. I feel like in this past few days I’ve seen a slight difference and I’ve tried a ton of eye creams. I looked it up and it’s in the top eye creams ever. I was like WOW. Plus the packaging feels luxe and it should last a few weeks to a month at least. Much bigger then I anticipated.

The nail polish felt luxe and a color I do not own. The fluid base had a little shimmer and felt smooth on the skin but not worth the high price in my opinion.

All in all I am very happy with the eye cream, the rest are just okay but the size of the eye cream makes it worth the $10 for sure!!! I will have to see if I will stay with SS.

Count me with the others who think this is a nice box but canceled after the last couple downers. I will definitely consider Jan if the spoliers look good. I would love if they avoided anything in dark shades too. They don’t look good on me.

I canceled after last month’s box and honestly, I’m not that sad about it! I’m sick of eye creams. I don’t wear nail polish. The only thing I would have liked was the butter London lip balm but I have so many lipsticks/glosses/balms, that I probably never would have gotten around to using it anyways!

My lipstick broke, it does not swivel up. I called them and they are sending me another box. He was going to give me $5 credit but then I said that is the highest value item. I then ask if I can buy another box for $10 since they are giving me the $10 credit. He then asked a supervisor and they said they can ship me another box.

Love this box. I am happy I did not cancel. Looking forward to January’s box.

This box looks really nice unfortunately I canceled after 2 crappy months, so of course this box would be great. Still too big of a gamble to subscribe for January.

This actually ended up looking decent, bummer because I canceled last month after being underwhelmed lately!

This was definitely one of my favorite boxes! I love the color i received in my lip balm and I really like the scent I received in the lotion as well ( La Source) I love Lavender and had hoped for the other scent but I know Liz loves Lavender also and after hearing the scent for that one wasn’t for her, I probably would not have liked it either….so, I am very happy with what I received. I have been with Sample Society for a long time, over 2 years maybe 3 and have been very happy with their customer Service also! I almost canceled because of all the skin care products but then their “revamp” took place and I’ve loved the variety….I hope they keep these awesome boxes up!

I cancelled this box after Octobers let down. I was lured back during their revamp, but ultimately was disappointed by their lack of service, every other month samples were missing or broken. Last month I took advantage of their past box sale and purchased two July boxes, only one was delivered and it was missing a polish. I wrote them to let them know and they shockingly gave me a response which said they would not be sending me my second box or a missing polish since they had sent me replacements in the past. I was outraged and informed them it’s not my fault they send me missing or broken product and if they didn’t send me my second box or fully refund me I would be taken the necessary legal action. My email got sent to a supervisor and they agreed to refund me and continued to inform me that they would No longer deliver to my address and I would need to provide alternate shipping address in the future. I don’t see why it’s my addresses fault a new address won’t stop missing parcels or broken items from happening! So long story short I guess I can’t subscribe to them, and at this point I wouldn’t want to give them my money.

Wow, sorry to hear about that! They keep messing up my order for the July SS box as well. I originally ordered kit B/D but ONLY received kit C. I called and they said kit B was OOS so they sent C but shouldn’t have without my consent, so I asked to get kit A instead. Plus they never shipped out kit D. So they agreed to send out kit A/D…but again I only received one kit (kit D) and this time they put it in a big box with some bubble padding but it must’ve gotten knocked around because the Laura Mercier powder was shattered. So, I call again and they said kit A didn’t get shipped out because it was OOS. They never let me know….no update, no refund email, nothing….so they were just going to take my money and not send me both kits. So I call again and they offer a full refund, but I asked for replacements, this time two kit D, as I wanted them for gifts. I was told they could only send me one kit, that his computer wouldn’t allow him to add two and would have to issue a refund for the other kit.

I was satisfied with that, but this makes me wonder if they keep a limit to how many times a product could be replaced, regardless of whether or not it is their fault. Now I’m afraid I’ll be on their “naughty” list for all these problems…that were entirely their fault.

Hey Mary,

Wow that was a lot of trouble on one order. Maybe they do have a list and they keep track of issues. All I know is it’s bad customer service to not keep the consumer informed on what’s happening with their order. I wasn’t about to let them keep my money. I think it’s horrible for them to fault customers for their mistakes. They have left a bad taste in my mouth and I’m in no rush to do business with them again.

Heather

Can u still buy this box?

Reply ButtonReply

Sneaky Burrito

Their cut-off date for ordering is about the 5th of the month. If you subscribe now, you’ll get the January box.

But…they’ve been having a lot of deals to get previous months’ boxes lately. So watch this site and you may still be able to buy one.

Wonderful box. I have too many skin care and make up right now (in fact enough for the next 2 years at least ) so I resisted the urge to buy it :-/ Difficult to pass on the great box like this one, but sometimes it is necessary. ..

After being very disappointed with last month, and somewhat disappointed with the month before, I am THRILLED with this month! I love absolutely everything in it, and really appreciated the booklet comment about using the eye cream in the morning as a base for my under eye concealer…. That is working well for me.
