Sample Society Subscription Box Review – January 2015 Box

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous.

They recently had a bit of a revamp – I’m not sure what the changes are anymore besides the packaging.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – January 2015 Zoya

REVLON Photo Ready Eye Art in Cobalt Crystal - FULL SIZE! Value $9

Zoya Nail Polish in Lillian - FULL SIZE! Value $9

I don't normally wear blue eye shadow products, but I was pretty intrigued by the metallic/sparkly finishes of this Revlon eye duo, so it was the first item out of the box that I tried. I found the application was easy, the metallic blue cream was pretty good at blending, and I like that the blue glitter side has a precision applicator brush. (Glitter is one of those makeup items I like to be as precise as possible with!)

Overall I like the product design and formula - but the colors aren't my favorite for my skin tone. I may try to swap for the Gold Glitz though. (Subscribers will receive 1 of 3 shades).

I love the Zoya brand and formula, so I'm always happy to see it in any subscription box. This pale blue shade works well for Winter or Spring/Summer too. (Subscribers will receive 1 of 5 shades).

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – January 2015 Hope

philosophy Renewed Hope In A Jar - .25 oz Value $5.87

Philip B. Light-Weight Deep Conditioning Creme Rinse - .5 oz Value $2.16

I have a deluxe sample of the Renewed Hope in a Jar thanks to Arianna Huffington's latest box, so this one will be my travel sample!

This deep conditioner is supposed to add shine and without giving you greasy hair. I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but so far I like that the scent is subtle.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – January 2015 Soap

StriVectin Intensive Illuminating Serum - .25 oz Value $10.50?

Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar  (15ml/ 0.5oz.) Value $5?

I can't find this StriVectin Serum anywhere online - I'm wondering if it is a brand new pre-released product? (If you are a better StriVectin sleuth than I am, let me know what you find!) This product isn't listed in the mini-mag/info booklet, so I'm guessing it was a late add-on. Regardless of the background story on this product, I'm always thrilled to get StriVectin in a subscription box- they are one of the few skincare brands where I can actually see a difference in my skin after using their products for only a few weeks. I'm hopeful this serum sample will last me a few weeks too!

This soap is another great travel-sized item - plus I love the scent.

Verdict: I think this is a pretty good Sample Society box! The value is a little over $40, and I'm happy with the sizes of all the products. What do you think of the January Sample Society box?

I loved this box! Well, everything other than the StriVectin serum which gave me whiteheads both times I tried it. Pretty disappointed to hear we’re getting in February again.

I love Zoya but I got the mint green polish and I already have 4 different mint shades from other brands. It’s not a color I wear frequently either.

The Erno Laszlo soap is my favorite by far! I’ve been wanting to try this soap for ages since it was used by Marilyn Monroe and she had such gorgeous skin, but I always felt spending $45 on a soap I couldn’t try first was a steep leap of faith, lol. However, after one use I was sold and will definitely be repurchasing once this little guy is gone. It smells amazing and leaves your skin really clean, even blackheads are more thoroughly cleaned out. However, it does leave my skin a little dry, but nothing that can’t be fixed with moisturizer!

Also, I was so impressed with the Philip B creme rinse that I purchased a full tube. I was rather annoyed with how small this sample was, though. It was nowhere near enough for all my hair, and my hair falls just below my shoulders. The spots I was able to apply it felt so smooth and soft that I wished I had just applied it to my ends. When I received the tube I bought for $17, I realized that in actuality it made my hair much too weighed down when I was able to apply it to all my hair. I felt like such a chump for falling into the bait and switch. It does leave your hair soft and shiny, but if you struggle with fullness and body, be aware this might be too heavy for your hair to maintain volume.

The one thing I noticed with Revlon cream shadow is that it does not work well with primers or anything containing silicones. That even includes moisturizer. It doesn’t adhere to the skin properly and begins to peel. If you use it on bare lids, it works beautifully.

I loved my box this month! I got the green polish and peach eye shadow. I am very happy with both! I really like the minty green polish it was a fun surprise because I don’t own anything like it. I have so many pinks, purples and blues I was a little nervous I would be disappointed with a repeat color. But, it all worked out and I got a fabulous box 🙂

I received the same box as yours, Liz. I’m very pleased with everything. The Rayne polish is SO pretty!! And for everyone who got the blue Revlon and thinks they can’t wear it, give it a shot! I swatched it on my hand and the cream side doesn’t scream “blue,” it reads more silvery/platinum. And the formula is great. It lasted through several hand washings and was still faintly there when I woke up this morning.

I just received my box and I totally love it. I got the pink nail polish and the pinkish peach revlon eye shadow. I am thrilled with my colors. It had shown on my sample society dashboard that I was getting the blue polish/ shadow so I was pleasantly surprised to get the pink. So far I have only read about people getting either the pink combination or the blue. Anyone out there get different polish and shadow?

I think that I may be the only person in the world the got the Zoya polish in the sickly green color.

LaurenH

Not so minty fresh as it looks??

Samantha

I got the Leslie in the Zoya a really nice lilac and got a goldish/bronze Revlon in the shadow. I really like both.

I received my “first” box today. Just started subscribing. I was missing 2 items out of the get go. I did not get the nail polish or the Philip B. Light creme rinse. I contacted customer service, we shall see what happens! I am happy with getting brands such as StriVectin and renewed hope in a jar to try, although the sample sizes are small! It’s hard to see if something really makes a difference with tiny samples. The Revlon colors I received is gold glitz, this would have been more appropriate during the holidays! Not sure I will use it. Can’t wait to try the Sea Mud cleansing bar!

This happened to me too. I ended up cancelling the box because of missing items. Customer service would not send the items but gave me a coupon code/small credit for their site…. eh.

Kathy

I’ve experienced missing items from other subs and my answer is to ask that either missing/damaged items be replaced or I’ll do a chargeback on credit card.

Dani

That’s not fair to anyone when they mess up packing these boxes, it has happened to me several times with birchbox and once with my first sample society box. I called them both and I was immediately shipped another full box. With birchbox if the item is no longer available they will give you points which I don’t mind or if it is more than one item they gave me credit to get the next box free, that was my experience. I cant say that they will do that for everyone every time but if it keeps happening I will cancel because it tends to get aggravating after a while!!

Hi lliz,

I found the Strivectin sample the other day online which took some time to find $99 ounce. I’m almost positive it’s the same one given this value $25. I’ll find the link for you guys.

The full size bar soap is $45 so I’m guessing your guess was accurate. It’s an amazing soap and gets great reviews. I cleaned my face but like it says you need to splash your face a lot to get rid of residue. It’s awesome!

This box was definitely better in person, glad I didn’t cancel. The moisturizer and serum are great. I love Zoya and received a gorgeous purple color shimmery and peach/gold eye lash/Line by Revlon.

This is not my favorite sample society box but I was super happy with it. Revlon is not the best brand but I got the peach color and I know I can gift it being full size. I know I have a friend who will love it more then I ever would. The nail polish is cute too and will go to the same friend. I love the other samples for myself and I wish at least one of them were full size-but they were dead on for the brands! SS is definitely the best in terms of brands but I wish they had more full size items! Last month’s was one of my favorites!!!

This box is ok for me. I love zoya too and I got Rayne- the metallic finished light blue – which I think is perfect for January, so I am thrilled with that! The revlon blue glitter is too young for me, I’ll gift it to a teen. The soap is for oily skin, I’ve had it before in a box, so that’ll go to a teen too. But i am happy with the philosophy and the strivectin. So overall– pleased but not thrilled.

Zoya.com have an AMAZING DEAL going on right now. 3 nail polishes of your choice with 3 free mini special edition colors for just $15 shipping! I did the same deal last year and love the colors I picked, the code is on the front page of the site.

Thanks for this info about Zoya. I ordered and love the polish I received. I ended up ordering a base coat, top coat, and remover, so I got the 3 full size and 3 minis for free.

Thanks for the heads up, I just put in an order. They have so many gorgeous colors and I found a purple one the same as my name! Very cool.

This is actually one of my fav boxes to date!! I love Zoya, so I’m always pleased for nail polish. Even though I have enough of it to last for 6 billion years. I got the blue, but the metallic version of yours, Liz. The Phillip B. Is nice because I have super fine hair. So hopefully it will be ultra hydrating without weighing down. I actually like the Revlon Blue shade the most. I do dramatic eye looks, & I’m pretty adventurous/open. And I really enjoy that they seem to have a cohesive system to this box. Cleanse(Mud soap), Serum/Treat(Strivectin), Moisturize(Philosophy). Most excited about the black mud soap!! Wanted to try that since ALog had that mud scrub oatmeal bar. One of those that I’d never buy, but since I recieved it, I’m stoked to use it! & I, like you, am always thrilled to see Strivectin anything. Because it’s powerful stuff & I definitely don’t skimp on skin care. (So I have about 18 steps in my routine.) I say that as I’m wearing a DIY 10cent banana peel mask on my face ;D And I’m super big on hydrate+acid/exfoliate anything. Plus hyaluronic acid is my go-to right now. I’m deff going to use all three steps this morning. Yes, the sizes are small. But there’s been plenty of boxes that I got the exact same sizes, with five products. So I think they more than made up for it with the addition of the sixth product. **I’d love if that was a recurring thing** 😀 HINTHINT SS!! (Plus fragrance is usually the one thing I don’t use out of every box. I’m just so super picky on scents with my weird body chemistry. I was delighted to see not only no fragrance, but no fragrance out of six products.) I always say, Dec and Jan are the absolute BEST months for sub boxes IMO. December is holidays so they wanna make a Big Bang for the last box of the year. January is the new year; so they wanna make an even bigger bang with the FIRST box of the year! I’ve been with SS since literally their very first box. So I kinda just did my own review. Sorry, I’m just so excited to share why I love this box so very much!!

I received the peach shadow and it is fabulous!! I haven’t tried the glitter yet though. This is my second box from Allure and I’m really enjoying this sub.

I think for $15 this SS is a good box, but I had gotten a few so so boxes Budget wise I had to go down to one beauty subscription box ad chose BB because of the points – I’m able to get what I need full size.

Just goes to show what a variety of opinions/preferences there are among box subscribers. I thought this box was terrible – blue nail polish and blue glitter eye shadow in the same box??? And the philosophy and Philip b samples are tiny. No thank you.

Omg this is one of the best boxes I’ve see. Is it too late to order one?

If you’re interested in this box I would email or FB them. I’ve seen comments where this has worked for some girls wanting already shipped boxes. Good luck!

I got the exact same box and colors and I love it! I am only swapping the blue shadow duo… I could never rock that! However, the rest of the box is awesome! Love it! This is a great start to 2015 for sample society!
