Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2015 Box

Sample Society is a monthly beauty subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. Typically the brands they include are high end, and the sample sizes are generous.

They recently had a bit of a revamp – I’m not sure what the changes are anymore besides the packaging.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2015 INfo

The box comes with a mini-mag detailing each item and why Allure editors decided to include it in the box.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2015 Nugg

nugg Face Mask in Deep Cleansing, Revitalizing, and Hydrating - Value $9.87

I sampled one of these before thanks to Birchbox, and I'm happy to have more versions to try. (I love that these masks are fragrance and paraben free). I just tried the hydrating mask, and I liked it. (The formula is a cross between a gel and a cream. It doesn't completely dry on your skin like some masks do, but instead just maybe gets a little sticky. And you only have to leave it on for 5-10 minutes!)

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2015 Batiste

Nails Inc Polish in Princes Palace - FULL SIZE! Value $9

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Blush - 50 ml Value $1.75

This nail polish has the name listed in the mini mag, so I'm assuming all subscribers will receive the same light blue color. This shade seems to be a mix of blue, periwinkle and grey, and I don't have anything like it in my collection.

I'm not a huge fan of the Blush scent of Batiste, but I don't mind it, and I know this is one of those cult-classic drugstore items, so I'll definitely use it.

Sample Society Subscription Box Review – February 2015 Serum

Chloe Love Story Perfume Sample - .04 oz Value $3

StriVectin Intensive Illuminating Serum - .25 oz Value $22.25

This perfume wasn't for me (and I never really like getting perfume samples in beauty boxes).

I received this serum in last month's Sample Society as well. (I'm not sure exactly what happened, but given that the serum is on the info mag this month, and not on last month's I think it was intended to be in this box. I'm not sure why it was also included in the January box). Now that I have two samples, that's half the size of the full size version, and should be enough to see if this serum does in fact help even out my complexion!

Verdict: When I first saw the spoilers for this box, I wasn't too excited, but now that I have it I realize I'll use everything besides the perfume, so the value is definitely there. (This box has a value of about $45). I know I've seen some comments about not everyone receiving the StriVectin serum in this month's box. If that had been the case with my box I would have been very disappointed with the value this month. (If that happened to you please let us know if and how Sample Society has resolved the issue).

Did you get the February Sample Society box? What do you think of it?

Did anyone actually try the Nails Inc. polish? I love the color, but when I put the polish on it seemed very thick to me and it didn’t go on smoothly. When I look at the Nails Inc website (link above by product picture), the bottle has been redesigned. Did we get old polish?

Melissa

I haven’t used the polish yet, so I can’t attest to the formula. I will say that Nails Inc has had the round bottles for a long time, and they still have the round bottles at my Ulta, so if they redesigned the bottle, it was very recent.

Just got my box.. Not impressed to say the least.. No Strivectin, no nail polish, nondescript color Cargo lipgloss, and another darn dry shampoo and lip balm.. My first box from them and most likely my last..

I loved my box this month! I think the February box was WAY better though. Compared to the horrible ipsy bags I was getting, Sample Society has been a great find!

I cancelled because of this box. I have so many perfume samples in that size for free that I literally have a tub of them. Going to be donating some so to get yet another is a huge let down. I feel that it’s the most cheap thing to receive as a sample. I thought they revamped so I sub’ed to them briefly…I did like December’s box & Januarys….nice items and in both of those, there were 2 full sized items which is more like it for the price. This month was not worth it for me..I pay attention to which is the best bang for the buck and they lost me here. On a rare note, I did like the nail polish…nice color. I like the StriVectin too but those 2 items were not worth it for me. I don’t expect to “like” everything in a curated box..I just expect my money’s worth. I personally feel this box competes with birchbox & Ipsy and should be priced accordingly or they need to up their game..the tiny perfume made me xcell….Sticking with Glossy, Boxycharm & Ipsy for now. I feel like they are more than worth it.

*Spoiler* I just got the March Allure and on page 54 there’s a picture of Benefit’s new Roller Lash mascara and it says “We’re including this mascara in the Allure Beauty Box! FOMO? Sign up at Allure.com/Beauty-Box”

Thanks for letting us know! I’ll post about it! 🙂

The StriVectin sample was also missing from my box and they also offered me a $5 credit. They claim that they no longer have anymore of the sample. Its really disappointing that they didn’t offer to send out the correct sample or a sample of similar value. Or they should have refunded the cost of the box since that was half the value. I went ahead and cancelled my subscription since they weren’t going to do anything else. They didn’t seem sad to see me go.

Well, just got my first box. Was going through everything, ans no nail polish in it! Big disappointment. I hope this isn’t a recurrence kinda thing. Bad first impression.

I just received mybox. Utter disappointment. No strivectin. Just the dime store $2 can of Baliste 3 Nugg sample packets (the kind you get when you order online with Ulta, not anything really fabulous), perfume (hate getting perfumes) and month number two of blue polish. I would of been thrilled to get the $22 sample of Strivectin… Called Allure… they are crediting my box $5… Even though something is better than nothing, I have to admit I was shocked it was just $5. Really, I’d rather they credit the entire thing or send out a replacement sample (doesn’t even need to be strivectin, with a note saying they ran out….as they didn’t deliver something on their marketing magazine- a total goof up on their part. Poor policies I guess… Maybe I will be canceling due to this. Who knows. This has happened to me with birch box and they sent a “bonus item”. When something arrived damaged with a birch box they offered to send out something after the fact with an apology. When glossybox sent a box with nothing in it but one thing on their product card, Glossy box credited me the entire box (and I got to keep the random box!) Allure Sample Society has fallen way down in my opinion meter. Sad.
So if you didn’t get your Strivectin, call them, they will at least credit you $5.

I am unhappy with Sample Society. I have been charged twice for the February box and am still waiting for this to be corrected as promised by customer service. I received an email letting me know the Strivectin Serum was omitted from my box. They gave my account a $5.00 credit but I’d rather have the product. This is a hugely disappointing box and will most likely cancel once the credit issues are resolved.

I can’t find any online swatches of the nail polish, and if you look at your dashboard, the name of the polish ends with “SS.” I am thinking that this may be a color that was created exclusively for Sample Society. Too bad I don’t like the color more.

Is the $10 code working for anyone? When I try applying, it says I have to spend $50 even though I’ve already added $64 to my cart -__-

I’m pretty happy with the box I was just disappointed with the whole Strivectin situation! Hopefully they can get there act together for next month with no mishaps!

That perfume was hideous!

I can’t help but wonder what is going on with Sample Society. Do they have new owners or new management? Before the revamp, they were consistent: good curration, good quality, good value and good customer service. After the revamp, things slid downhill fast and there seems to be a problem almost every month. I held on a bit longer than I should have, but I’m super glad I canceled in November. At this rate, I don’t see them staying in business much longer.

Beautybar.com, the company that operates it, actually belongs to Quidsi, a subsidiary of Amazon.com – so I don’t think they’re going away. What’s weird is that they seem to recognize in public statements the importance of responsive customer service – but in reality they don’t seem to care. Maybe the problem is that their primary business is selling high-end beauty items, and doing a box is secondary, and they don’t care for the sort of customers they attract that way.

I had a pretty crappy CS experience with Beauty Bar, not related to Sample Society. In general, I don’t think they walk the talk.

Lisa J

Liz… Like Michelle stated, it was sent out in January by accident. I only know this because my Jan. box was missing the nail polish and the Strivectin, I emailed customer service and they said the Strivectin was, indeed, meant for the Feb. box and I would have to wait to receive it. Everybody who got two is lucky! 🙂 The nail polish in this box is a beautiful color. I don’t have anything like it either.

This is my first Sample Society box and I got the same items as Liz. Excited to try the Strivectin – I’ve never used it before.

Whitney // Beauty With Whitney

I wasn’t too excited about this box at first, but when I saw that the nail polish was full size, it made me happier (and I did get the Strivectin again). I’m looking forward to trying it with a matte topcoat!

This is my first month. Luckily I haven’t gotten an email saying they “forgot” something. But I also haven’t gotten my box. I already canceled based on everyone else’s experiences so a 5$ credit would do me no good.

Reply ButtonReply

PA Anna

I’m glad that I cancelled for this month although the nail polish is pretty. I can’t believe how many problems they have with fulfillment of orders.

Reply ButtonReply

Sandy

They left out the nail polish in mine, which sucks because I love that brand. I emailed them and they said they’re out of the February box so they can’t send a replacement. They gave me a $5 credit which expires in like 3 months. I’ll never use that credit. If this were Birchbox, they would’ve sent me the replacement item and given me 100 points in the Birchbox shop.

Reply ButtonReply

Davi

I would definitely go back and tell them that you are not satisfied with that solution. You paid for the box and did not get all of the items in the box, and a $5 credit for the future forces you to spend more money. You should not have to spend more money in order to get what you already paid for!!! That’s ridiculous, I wouldn’t accept that!

Reply ButtonReply

Sandy

You know, I’m glad you suggested that! I emailed them and said a $5 credit that makes me spend more money is not a “resolution.” I didn’t ask for anything else, but just wanted to let them know that their resolution was not great. They sent me an email and said as “one-time courtesy” they have refunded me $5. I’m satisfied with that!

brandy Lillie

In also form The email for a $5 credit because I wasn’t getting the serum. That was the one item I also was ideally looking forward to but I got a code for $5 the $15 and now this $5 credit back. Sooo I only paid $5 for my February box, can’t complain to much…I guess. Still sucks though, they made an error last month and sent the serum out, and now I’m sure like someone else said they ran out So some of us get a “shipping error.”

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

There was a post on Facebook a few weeks back saying the Strivectin was sent early in error and that we’d be getting it again in February. I liked it, so I’m happy to have more.

Reply ButtonReply

Marga

As I mentioned in other comments, I just subscribed to the box. I got the announcement that it shipped, and a couple of days later an e-mail saying that the serum had not shipped “in error” and that they were crediting me $5. I wrote back and asked that the serum be shipped separately, and they say they wouldn’t send it, and that’s why they were crediting me $5. I wrote back and said that was not adequate. That they should either provide another product or do a full refund on the box. They replied saying that the policy was to refund $5 and nothing else and they wouldn’t do anything else. We had a couple of back & forths about their lack of professionalism, but the end result is them saying they wouldn’t do anything. Needless to say, I unsubscribed.

Given that this serum was sent to others in January, my bet is that they ran out of it for the February boxes. But then they should have stopped accepting orders for new boxes or find something else to put in them. And saying that the serum didn’t ship “in error” is just fraudulent. They knew very well it wasn’t in the boxes when they mailed them.

This is just a very unprofessional company, IMHO.

I would refute the charges with my credit card and file a complaint with the BBB! Basically they are saying that they are not going to give you what you already paid them money for and instead are giving you a $5 credit which forces you to spend more money with them if you actually want to use it. That’s complete BS!

Reply ButtonReply

Marga

My husband actually suggested that if everyone refuted their charges, they might change that policy. I might do that when I get my credit card statement. But it’s a lot of time to spend on the phone for a small amount of money.

Samantha

I am so mad that they didn’t send me the strivectin sample! lol its the first problem I’ve ever had in 4.5 years of subscribing to different boxes but I’m still disappointed! I don’t think it should be that hard to order more samples and just let me know my box will be late lol

Robin

This is my 1st month. I was charged twice (they corrected) and then I received the email they left the serum out of the box. The did credit me $5 but I am not too impressed with my first experience and not sure if I will continue. One a positive note I love the face masks.

This was my first Sample Society box and to be honest, I wasn’t blown away. I am going to give it another few months and then cancel and switch to Glossybox or Boxycharm. I’ve gotten a lot of dry shampoos in other boxes so I seem to have more than I need. And I’m like you, I hate getting perfume in my boxes. I have so many samples that I will never wear and I feel like it’s a stretch calling them “deluxe samples.”
