Naomi Kyle Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NKQ02 - Box

Naomi Kyle is one of the latest curators for Quarterly, and since her box has a gamer focus, I'm going to take a shot at reviewing it!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Naomi Kyle Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NKQ02 - letter

Each Quarterly box comes with a letter from the curator detailing the items and why they were selected for the box. This box's focus is Gamer Fuel and Fun, and is a collaboration with Naomi's friend/food fanatic Kristin Emi.

Battery Morph Mug - Value $12 on Amazon

Black coffee is kind of my lifeblood. It's certainly developer fuel, that's not even a question - as for gamers, I think more of sugary beverages, like Mountain Dew. But certainly, for older gamers - coffee could be the weapon of choice. This mug's battery graphic fills up as you fill it with the hot beverage of your choice. It's also important to note that it's not microwave or dishwasher safe.

Ritual Coffee 8 oz Bag - Value (estimated off of a 12 oz. bag) $13

Sticking with the coffee theme, we get a little something to fill our new mug! My guilty coffee pleasure is squeezing a bag off coffee and smelling the aroma from the little air valve. I can never be disappointed in receiving coffee - so this will go to use.

Hot Chocolate On A Stick (2 count) - Value $6 each?

Here's another item to use in your mug - Hot Chocolate on a stick! I've tried a product like this once before, and it was really really good. While I'm not a big hot chocolate drinker, I am very tempted to just eat this chocolate as is.

It also includes a handwritten recipe for the Hot Chocolate on a Stick.

Naomi Kyle Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NKQ02 - cc-made

CC Made Popcorn 3 oz - Value $5

This looks delicious. I say 'looks' because they never made it to me, but Liz tells me it was fantastic and enjoyed by her friends!

Naomi Kyle Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NKQ02 - earbuds

Skullcandy Ink'd Earbuds - Value $10-15 on Amazon

We receive a lot of earbuds in subscription boxes - but it is nice to get a set with a microphone.

Naomi Kyle Quarterly Subscription Box Review #NKQ02 - game-code

Green Ronin Dragon Age RPG Set 1 Download Code - Value $17.50

Dragon Age is a table top role playing game. The download includes:

  • A 64-page Player's Guide with an introduction to tabletop roleplaying, background on Thedas and the nation of Ferelden, a complete guide to character creation, rules for character classes and talents, a primer on magic, and the basic game rules.
  • A 64-page Gamemaster's Guide with an introduction to this key role, advice on the art of game mastering, advanced game rules, and an introductory adventure that plunges the characters right into the world of Dragon Age.
  • A beautiful poster map of the nation of Ferelden, the opening setting for the Dragon Age RPG.
  • All three PDFs are distilled directly from the layout files, not scanned.

Verdict: People subscribing for video game related items may be a bit disappointed with this box - but Naomi does include a nice mixture of foodie/gamer items, and sticks to the promised theme while coming in over the cost of the box. The one item that was a spoiler, was the Google Cardboard Headset - which may sound fake, but is real - and it wasn't included here, which is a big time bummer for me - I was looking forward to trying to understand it a bit more.

I remember the spoiler about the Google cardboard headset. Did the letter mention a reason why it was not included in the box?

JacLyn

Nope. It wasn’t mentioned at all. Maybe the deal fell through? I’m hoping it will be in a future box. 🙂

There was nothing in the letter. No email, no message, not even so much as a tweet. It was really upsetting because it was the whole reason I bought this box. I had to track down a reply tweet saying that they didn’t receive the headset in time and that it’ll be sent in the next box… IDK if I’ll stay around for that.

Your review was entertaining and I like that mug. 🙂 Thank you!

You forgot the Dragon Age dice! Did you get one in your box? I really liked this box a lot more than the first one. The caramel corn was delicious. <3 I used the mug for tea and we all watched as the battery filled up. haha 🙂 We don't drink coffee, but earbuds and hot chocolate are always welcome. We have been trying to collect different rpg systems to teach our girls, so that was a good addition, too. I wonder what happened with the Google Cardboard Headset. They don't cost much, though, so if we really wanted one, I guess we could just buy it. lol 🙂

Oh – no I didn’t get the dice! I just dug around in the box, but I haven’t found anyhting

It’s actually pretty cool, white with red dragons. Ours was in the plastic bag with the earbuds. Just placed in it, though, so it could have easily fallen out.

Isn’t Naiomi Kyle, Catwoman’s real name?

My husband and son are both big gamers. I thought about this one but decided against it due to cost. So glad we passed. 50.00 for some coffee, popcorn and a code for a game nobody really plays anymore. Horrible box.

So glad I unsubscribed from this box before I even got the first one.
