This month’s theme is Fresh Grill.
The booklet details all of the items included in the box.
It also provides recipes, tips for sourcing good meat for grilling, and instructions for prepping the wooden planks.
Trio of Maple, Cedar, & Hickory Grill Planks from Hamptons Lane- $15
I’ve never experimented with plank grilling before, and I’m excited to give it a try! I love that Hamptons Lane included three different types of wood and that they provide recipes that help you learn which meats pair well with the different planks.
FireWire Flexible Grilling Skewers - $15
The price listed on the FireWire site is a little lower than the price Hamptons Lane lists on their website. It’s hard to tell, but I think the link above is for a single skewer, so I’m using the price provided by Hamptons Lane. Anyway, I think this is a great product to include in a grilling box. The FireWire patented skewers hold twice as much as normal skewers, and they’re constructed with a material that doesn’t get hot on the grill, which makes it easy to flip them by hand. I can’t wait to try them out!
Lillie's Q Carolina BBQ Sauce (16 oz.) - $8
This BBQ sauce stays true to its Carolina roots with a tangy flavor that comes from tomatoes and vinegar. Lillie’s Q restaurants use this sauce when smoking whole pork shoulder (yum), but they recommend using it on anything and everything.
Rub with Love Salmon Rub (3.5 oz.) - $6.50
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine got married in Seattle and included a pot of Rub with Love in the out of town guest bags. I lost the rub en route back home (or maybe left it in the hotel room), and I was always sad that I never got to try it. Perhaps needless to say, I’m thrilled to receive another one from Hampton’s Lane! The salmon rub flavors “the best salmon in Seattle” at Etta’s restaurant, and is a blend of paprika, thyme, and brown sugar.
Elvio's Chimichurri (8 oz.) - $17.50
I received a jar of Elvio’s Chimichurri in last month’s Mantry, and I ended up using it to flavor a wild rice filling for stuffed summer squash. It was incredibly delicious, so I’m happy to receive another jar and excited to learn some new recipes that incorporate it!
A Grilled Feast!
Every month, Hamptons Lane provides recipes to accompany their box. I’ve had a lot of luck with the Hamptons Lane recipes, and I always look forward to making them. For this month’s fresh grill theme, I decided to make Etta’s Famous Grilled Salmon and Chimichurri Potato Salad.
Recipe #1- Etta’s Famous Grilled Salmon
I love grilled salmon, so it was a given that I had to try Etta’s famous recipe!
The dish was incredibly simple. I quickly seared the flesh of two salmon fillets and then rubbed them with Rub with Love Salmon Rub. I placed the fish skin down on a wooden plank and grilled for about 10 minutes.
The salmon turned out to be really tasty, and I love the Rub with Love! The brown sugar in the rub caramelized during cooking and created a delicious, slightly crunchy coating. I was also pleased to see that I could taste the flavors of the wood in the fish!
My only complaint has to do with the size of the wooden planks. I found them to be a little on the small side. They easily fit a single-serve fillet but weren’t large enough to accommodate all of the fish I wanted to make for dinner (I was cooking for a few people). I ended up using multiple planks, which worked out just fine, but I think my preference would have been for a single large plank, instead of three smaller ones.
Recipe #2- Chimichurri Potato Salad
I received a jar of Elvio’s Chimichurri in last month’s Mantry box, and I’ve been looking for ways to incorporate it into my cooking. When I saw that Elvio’s was also included in this month’s Hampton’s Lane box, I was excited to see how it would feature in their recipes. This recipe for Chimichurri Potato Salad is so creative- I couldn’t wait to try it!
I began by stringing potatoes and red onions on the Firewire. I marinated them in chimichuri for about 20 minutes and then tossed them on the grill with some asparagus.
I was happy to find that the Firewire was effective and easy to use. I love that I can now flip my kebabs without burning my fingers. Goodbye, wood skewers1
When all of the veggies were done, I tossed them together in a bowl with some additional chimichurri and fresh dill. I finished the salad with a couple of hardboiled eggs.
This dish was hearty, filling, and packed full of flavor. I love the idea of using the chimichurri with grilled vegetables, and I think it’s a great, fresh take on a classic BBQ side dish.
Verdict: I look forward to Hamptons Lane every month, and I love that each box helps me create a unique dining experience. I think this month’s “Fresh Grill” theme is perfect for an August box, and the items in the box all feel thoughtfully selected. As usual, the Hamptons Lane recipes I tried were well written and delicious. In terms of value, the items in this box total $62, so I’m very happy with that. Hamptons Lane consistently offers excellent curation and solid value for money, and I wholeheartedly recommend it for adventurous cooks and foodies!
