A few times a year, ModCloth launches their "Stylish Surprise" - mystery items at a deep discount (you get to pick the category and size).

Here were the categories and prices this time:

ModCloth stylish Surprise is Available Now!

FYI - this is completely sold out, but make sure to sign up for notifications at the end of this post to get an email alert the next time the Stylish Surprise is available!

Shipping is free on orders of $75 or more, so I decided to get 3 shoes, 2 apparel pieces and 1 dress = $80.

Here are the items:

modcloth-stylish-surprise-top

Doe & Rae Blouse - Value $35?

(100% Polyester)

I found similar Doe & Rae blouses on ModCloth for $35-$40, so I'm estimating $35 for the value. I love this top! It's slightly sheer, so I'll have to layer a cami underneath, but I think it's so classic and modern with the collar design:

Doe & Rae Top - Value $35?

(100% Cotton)

Another black and white Doe & Rae top! This one isn't as much of a hit with me - only because I feel like I can't pull off a peter pan collar in most instances. The collar detail work is a little fuzzy too:

modcloth-stylish-surprise-maxi

Poema Maxi Dress - Value $50?

(100% Polyester)

A black maxi? And one that has floral detail so that it is different enough from the other 10+ black maxis I own?! Yes!

Here is a better look at the detail:

modcloth-stylish-surprise-maxi-detail

It is a little baggy at the waist, but I'm hoping that putting it through the laundry will shrink it a bit.

Now onto the shoes:

One thing that makes the Stylish Surprise Shoes category a little tricky for me is that I'm usually a size 9 in flats but an 8.5 in heels. (Is anyone else two different shoe sizes depending on the heel situation? I may be the only one!)

modcloth-stylish-surprise-fall-2015-shoes

Machi Heels - Value $39.99

(Value based on other Machi Heels). These have a cute retro vibe that I like, but just isn't my personal style.

I really wish I loved them enough to wear them all the time and need a backup pair, because ModCloth sent me two identical pairs!

Fortunately, ModCloth will refund you if they do this - just contact customer care.

Now the last item:

modcloth-stylish-surprise-fall-2015-sandals

Naughty Monkey Sandals - Retail Value $60, On Sale for $24

(Leather upper. Man-made lining and sole)

I don't need summer sandals now, but I'll definitely wear these next year.

Verdict: I paid $80 and out of the 6 items I received, 3 were hits. That's an OK success rate for a mystery box. Assuming ModCloth refunds me $10 for the pair of duplicate shoes I received, that's 3 successful items for $70 - or $23.33 a piece. Not bad (not great, but not bad). I'll probably still try my luck at Stylish Surprise next time!

What did you get from the Modcloth Stylish Surprise this time? Was your luck better than mine?

I’ll have to be sure to be on the lookout for this box. I absolutely adore those shoes!

I have the exact same problem with shoes. Even the same size LOL I just love those Machi shoes! I wonder if they still sell them… Are the surprise boxes discontinued items?

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

The Machi shoes are definitely sold out on the Modcloth site. They are called the “Dance Instead of Walking” Heel. Maybe you can track them down somewhere else! 🙂

I was very excited when I got my box. The shoes are must haves. The dresses, however, didn’t fit my body type. I have just started a blog and my 1st “how to” project was to customize one of the dresses. I added length, sleeves, a collar and a belt. I love it now! I am turning the other one into an apron dress. I can’t wait to wear it while cooking during my Christmas party. When life gives you lemons…

Will you please share your blog, Kimberly? I am a novice sewist, and I’d love to see what you did! Thanks! 🙂

Kimberly

For now it is at thistognat.wordpress.com. I am new to blogging but I am looking forward to making more posts. My sewing skills are self taught but even with the flaws I very much enjoy altering and making fun changes to my clothing. Thanks for inquiring!

PA Anna

I ordered 2 pairs of shoes, 2 apparel items, and 2 dresses. I like the cut of the one dress, but not the pattern. I did not like the material of the other dress. The shoes are OK. The apparel items did not work out. Feel free to click on my name to see pictures.

Do they ship to canada?

i ordered a dress and apparel. The dress is absolutely lovely, fits like a dream and is very well made the only problem is it is a homecoming (prom?) dress and I am 27 years old but 10 years ago I would have worn it in a heartbeat. I was thinking about trying to pull it off for my cousin’s wedding in April but last week she asked me to be a bridesmaid so I may try to swap or sell it. The other item that I received is a lovely mustard yellow long sleeve button down blouse. Also fits nicely however with 3 buttons undone is a a bit risqué but with 2 it is too tight, it looks nice with a camisole underneath though. Over all I’m very pleased with both items, I can’t really wear the dress but that is not mod cloth’s fault.

I bought 2 dresses and 3 apparels. So I receive 3 cheap blouses ( really you don’t buy this kind of blouse for more than $ 10.00), 1 junior dress ( maybe you can find for $ 20.00) but the last dress save my box. I saw one similar ( different color) for $179.00 on the website. My dress is like a short wedding dress with gold tones and on the website is like a cream color. Really a gorgeous dress, look like a princess dress. This is the risk of buying this, when I bought this for the first time I really loved everything what I order, for the second time I hated everything, and for now is love and hate feelings :). But that’s ok. Let’s see the next Stylish surprise reserves to me…

Becky

My first time ordering. I got two horrific “dresses” that I’ve never seen on the Modcloth website. One was a heavy knit, short sleeve dress that came to the middle of my thighs, and the other looked like a bathing suit cover up I’d buy at Ross for $9.99. I ordered a size larger than usual so both fit slightly loosely, but they will never be worn by me. I would have died and gone to heaven if I’d received those gnome shoes.

Reply ButtonReply

Sue

I was super sad because I ordered 2 pairs of shoes and they cancelled my order. Maybe next time.

Reply ButtonReply

LS

That’s so sad! I’m convinced the shoes are the best deal. I’m going to order them again next time.

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

I liked some of what I got, and disliked other things. When I called I got such horrible customer service I don’t think I’ll ever shop with them again, stylish surprise or otherwise. I was looking through their site at what I liked and really, a lot of their cute details mimic things I already have in my closet because of stylish surprise items. I think I will survive without adding more. Well, without adding more that isn’t from the swap site 🙂

Beth m

I got high heels where the heel part is a lawn gnome. You are all very lucky you didn’t get those. What a treat.

Reply ButtonReply

Tia

OMG! I would love to swap/buy them off of you if you are a size 9-10.

Reply ButtonReply

Chillybeans

I think the gnome shoes would be awesome for a Halloween party!!

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

What size are they? I looked to see if they were up for swap but alas, they were not.

Reply ButtonReply

Bonny

Beth, at first I was jealous because the first words I noticed was high heels. Then, I read the whole ” gnome” part, lol. I would love to see a pic of those. Actually, I NEED to see a pic, lol…pretty please?

Reply ButtonReply

LS

I’ve seen those on their site. They are pricey shoes and their kitsch value is amazing. Clearly their use would be more minimal, but they’d be conversation starters in the right environment.

PA Anna

I clicked on the link. It’s a little freaky looking. My shoes were OK. I received Rocket Dog Fanny Lovely Crochet and Besty Johnson Glimner Blush Shoes with a 4.25″ heel. You can click on my name to see pictures.

I would feel strange walking on lawn gnomes. I can see them being popular.

chris

Those gnome shoes are awesome!

Katey

Those must be Irregular Choice. They’re actually highly sought after on a lot of the swap sites. But if you decide to sell paying $10 for $200 shoes will give you a great profit!

Randi

Omg, those are so cute/strange/crazy/awesome! I actually really like them. Not sure when or where I would ever where them, but I love how unique they are. The wedding ones they have are cute too!

Chantelle Walker

LOVE those Machi Heels 🙂 and my size too 😉 lol I didn’t make it in time to order shoes, I got two dressed (first stylish surprise for me so didn’t want to go over board) still waiting for my box. So excited!

Reply ButtonReply

LS

I was very pleased with what I got. The shoes are all varied and fit and are styles that easily fit into my wardrobe. I got two dresses: one is beautiful and fits very well, the second is a cute dress of good value, but looks odd on me. I’m considering having the hem on the second dress brought up to something more fitting my body. I got two tops as well: one is very plain but very much my style, the second is super snug and nearly a midriff. I found pictures online of the second top that show it paired with skirts in a way I might attempt, but my boobs spill out of the top. I’d need to wear a cami, but it’s so snug, I’m not sure that I can.

For the shoes, dress and top that I do like and will wear easily, I am VERY pleased with the value.

chillybeans

Liz, a tailor/seamstress can easily take in the waist for you. It shouldn’t be expensive either. Or a friend who sews!
This was my second time ordering from Stylish Surprise, I ordered one dress each time and was very happy-dresses fit me perfectly and are very cute. One was a cream lace dress, the other a peach top/navy bottom with tons of tiny buttons.
I think the dresses are the best item imho, don’t like the shoes/tops nearly as much.

Karen

i loved half of my SS but I was kind of disappointed when I found the sandals I received on the modcloth site were on sale for $7.99 and the top I got was on sale for $11.99.. Both cheaper than what i paid! I know it’s a risk doing SS tho.

Reply ButtonReply

Sarah

Karen, email them and tell them how disappointed you are that your items went on final sale for less than you paid for them! 🙂 Be sure to give them links to the items so they can see the price difference. At least, this strategy worked for me, and I got a credit for the price difference.

Courtney

I’ll never buy these again. I ordered a top and they were sold out of my size so I got a 3x thinking it’d be way too big and I’d probably just layer it under a sweater, whatever… NO. I wear a 1X and the top that came was labeled as a 3x and was SO SMALL I couldn’t fit my boobs in to it. My neighbor is a size Large and it fit her pretty snug. Like, WHAT? When I called customer service they pretty much told me it was my fault it didn’t fit and didn’t own up to sending a brand that was known for running really, really small. Because I was a new customer they gave me a $15 credit. Ripped off. Never again!

Reply ButtonReply

Bonny

Liz, I was waiting for your review on this one. I agree with your 3 out of 4.
The dress I received was a “pull over” your head dress.Unfortunately, I couldn’t pull it over my boobs. My dress was not true to size, unless it was a Junior or Missy size. I received 3 pairs of summer shoes and 1 pair of flats. I live in Ohio, so I will have to wait to wear the summer shoes.
I think that the Spring sale will bring great fall items, so I will order again. The reviews that I have seen, for the spring sale, appears to have items that are more my style.

Kristin

I had the same problem with one of my dresses! It’s a beautiful floral Jolie Moi satin dress and when I pulled it out of the box I was psyched but it had to go over my head and when I tried to put it on I couldn’t get it over my boobs. I’m slightly larger up top but I pretty much always fit in mediums and the tag says it is a euro size 10. So disappointed! The other medium sized dress I got fit perfectly though so at least one worked.

Reply ButtonReply

Angela

A lot of ModCloth stuff is in juniors’ sizing, which is reflected in their generic size chart.

Reply ButtonReply

Mandy

I also wear different sizes depending on the heel/shoe configuration. When wearing some flats I am an 8, heels 8.5, and if I wear socks and boots I am a 9. It’s horribly difficult to pick out shoes online! Even worse since I have to wear orthotics! I love to wear Orthaheel/Vionic brand shoes since they have the orthotic built in but they aren’t always sized the same and I usually have to return most everything at least once. LOL!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Thanks for letting me know I’m not the only one! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Mandy

Ditto! LOL! 🙂

Loba

I love ModCloth and will buy stuff from them in the future but I will never do a clothing/shoe stylish surprise again. Since I love their stuff (especially their shoes) I figured I couldn’t go wrong. I usually have to size up and for shoes I am either an 8.5 or a 9 (depends on width if shoe or heel height).
I ordered 5 apparels, 2 shoes and 1 dress. 1 top was 4 sizes too small (customer service says they’ll refund). 2 were cute but way too big. 1 is not my style and a little small. Argh… And 1 was a style I have wanted but in mustard yellow (just not a good look with my skin tone). The dress was too small but I don’t think I’ll ever wear it anyways. The shoes. Not my style. So someone at Goodwill is going to get some new clothes and shoes.
Oh well, now I know.
I would have been happy with those shoes you got Liz. Que Sera Sera….

Reply ButtonReply

Mandy

You might have some luck on the swap site here. There’s bound to be someone who will love them. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Marissa

Yay! I ordered all 8.5 and got 4 pairs of shoes, one of which is the same Machi you got! Twins! I love how cute they are but I have no idea how I’m going to wear them lol. I also got a Chinese laundry, cl by Chinese laundry and bamboo pair! Pretty good haul for me 😀 $43 with tax and dour pairs of really cute shoes in my size! I only put one pair, the Chinese laundry, up for swap because no matter how gorgeous they are ankle straps on me look awful :'(

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

They must have had a lot of those Machi shoes to send out. I got the same ones too!

Reply ButtonReply

Emma

I love that maxi and the sandals!! I tried it last time, and all three items I got were huge flops, so I passed this time. You’re making me regret it though!

Reply ButtonReply

Keri S.

Two of the things I love about Liz the most:
1. Your use of the washer/dryer to attempt to refit any piece of clothing that isn’t quite right. It’s not only industrious, but, it’s an inexpensive alternative as well.
2. Your love of all things Maxi (dresses). And, you’re never afraid to admit it! How many do you think you have in total? Be honest!

*If you don’t want to send the 2nd pair of shoes back, I would love to buy them from you. I think I’m on swap wait list.

xxx Keri

Reply ButtonReply

Randi

Completely agree Keri!
On the laundry note – I love and completely appreciate Liz’s “dislike” of dry cleaning and her willingness to ignore the label and take a chance and toss it in the washing machine. When I read that Liz does it, I know I can do it too! (the black and white bags from Sept PSMH for example)

I have a few things that really do need dry cleaned, but I always forget to grab them. Its just an annoyance for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Randi

whoops – I guess I was a little wrong – those bags are “hand wash”… but still the same idea since she’s putting them in the washing machine (which is what I’ll be doing too)
I might hand wash something really delicate and valuable, but a couple small bags – nope, those will be going in the washing machine.

chris

Wow, it’s like they picked the dress just for you! Congrats!

And the shoes for you and your… twin?! LOL

I was a little disappointed. I ordered las time also. I received 2 dresses and 2 tops. This time I received 1 in each box. The dress was beautiful. It was an emerald green lace dress. I will wear it for Christmas. The top not so much. It was a thin white high /low t-shirt. It had a red stripe across each shoulder. I would never buy this top.
