CurlKit Subscription Box Review September 2015 - 1

I’m so excited to review the CurlKit for MSA!! Curlkit was one of my very first subscriptions way back in 2013 and they introduced me to the ever-growing community of Naturalistas on YouTube and other social medias.

CurlKit is one of very few hair care subscription services.  Mainly focused on the needs of curly hair, they provide a variety of quality products that can be hard to find in stores.  CurlKit also has an online shop where you can purchase products found in the subscription.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review September 2015 - 6

Each box comes with a “CurlLife” pamphlet and a few product cards.  This month’s title is Hollywood Curls.  Every month CurlLife includes a note from the Co-Founder, Heather Cummings; photos and descriptions of the products received; an article/interview of a Naturalista; and some sort of hair care tip/turtorial.  It’s always informative and probably the one of the most useful inserts I’ve seen in any subscription.  This month’s featured covergirl and interview is Actress Tanya Wright.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review September 2015 - 9

Qhemet Biologics - Amla & Olive Heavy Cream 1oz - Value: $8.00

Heads up MSA Swappers, this packaging is sealed.  I’m keeping mine though.  My hair gets very dry in the Winter and this brand is new to me.  This multi-purposed moisturizer can be used as a deep conditioner, body butter, or daily leave in conditioner as a few examples.

Doo Gro - Tingling Gro Shampoo 15ml - Value: $1.00

This sample is an unlisted bonus item.  I’ll pass this along.  I’m not a fan of sulfates in my wash routine and it’s the second ingredient listed.  It says it’s great to remove and control dry scalp and flaking.  I don’t suffer from either issue.  Pass.

ORS - Shealicious Shine Booster 2.5oz - Value: $3.49

Too Cool!  I’ve never seen packaging like this that wasn’t food. LOL!  I will be using this deep conditioner next.  This also has Amla, Argan oils and Shea butter too.  It says online that you add as much or little of the oil that you need for your hair type.  Knowing me, I’m going to mix most of it in and rub the rest on my elbows if it smells good.  I’m just telling the truth.

Doo Gro - Mega Style Edge Gel with Olive Oil 0.5oz - Value: $1.00

I’m laughing so hard right now trying to figure out how to explain what “edges” is/are for those that aren’t familiar with the term.  So just watch this short video, get your edges laid and we’ll just keep it moving.  I like having little containers of gel like this around the house.  I especially love having mini hair care products when family and friends spend the night.  I make my houseguests boxes filled with all sorts of toiletries for their stay.

Qhemet Biologics - Aethiopika Hydrate & Twist Butter 0.24oz - Value: $7.00

I was excited to see that this second product from QB was also multi-purposed.  It can be used as a body butter and for hair care.  I hate how hard it is to manipulate in this tiny container.  It’s a solid butter that you have to warm up in your hands.  I tried to use it as a body butter, but it didn’t soften as easily as I had hoped.  I’ll give the rest a go for a twisted hair style.  On a positive note, the ingredients are silicone, paraben and mineral oil free.  Definitely worth a second try.

Ecoco Inc - Eco Natural Cocktail with Olive Oil & Shea Butter 0.5oz - Value: $1.00

Another unlisted bonus item.  We’ve used this exact style cream before and it works wonders in my son William’s 3b/c curls.  It’s also free of parabens, alcohol and sulfates.  Ecoco carries a number of stylers and gels and this one is an all-around favorite.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review September 2015 - 17

Creme of Nature - Moisture & Shine Shampoo with Argan Oil 12oz - Value: $6.50

Surprisingly, this is also an unlisted bonus item!  I’m not overly excited about this product.  It’s sulfate-free which is great for a shampoo but there are parabens listed.  It’s sealed which is great for swapping, but the shipping cost may exceed the value.  This will most-likely go to the donation bin.

Caribbean Natural - Replenishing Growth Oil 8oz - Value: $5.50

This oil smells very good.  It’s meant to provide hydration and shine and has great ingredients like coconut and argan oils.  Unfortunately for us, there’s peanut oil listed as well.  Abigail is highly allergic to peanuts and I can’t have this hanging around the house.  Bless a friend/Donate bin, it’s all good.

Kardashian Beauty - Twirl Me Curl Defining Cream-Gel 5oz - Value: $13.99

First of all, I didn’t even know Kim K and Kompany had hair products.  Go’head girls!  Secondly, I wanted to love this because the packaging is beautiful. It pumps from the bottom up.  No waste, no crazy bottle smacking when it gets too low.  You know what I’m talking about!  LOL.  I decided to test this out on Abigail because... well, she’s got the straightest ‘curly’ hair in the house.  I applied a small amount to detangled dry hair and the style came out beautifully!!  Unfortunately, this product is heavily perfumed!  It was so strong John thought I sprayed the poor child with a perfume of mine.  He hated it!  I think it’s worth a second go considering the final outcome.  The ingredients are paraben free but contains paraffins.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review September 2015 - 20

Verdict:  September CurlKit has an estimated value of $47.50.  I like the mixture of full, deluxe and mini sized products.  This month, I was introduced to four brands I had never used before.  It’s been a year since I’ve subscribed to CurlKit, I was surprised by the inclusion of three bonus items and that one was even full sized.  Overall, I think this box was an incredible purchase for anyone building their haircare stash.  I’m hoping that CurlKit will bring more of the smaller businesses to the forefront by providing full sized items of those unique products.

Very nice! I am liking this box.

Its really too bad that for a curly box they put items in that contain sulfates and other ingredients that are not curl friendly. If you’ve ever read the curly girl handbook most of these products are actually not curly friendly bc of their ingredients 🙁

I’m like Marlene – I found many of the products in this box (and Curlbox) are good but passed most of them off to family members who aren’t as “ingredient strict” as me lol. I seriously disliked seeing a Kardashian product though. That family is anti-Black in the most “liberal” sense so they don’t deserve our money let alone profiting from products targeting us so to the trash it went!

I have two more boxes left before I decide to renew or not but I’m excited regardless. Like many curlies, I’m a product junkie lol.

Btw, LOL at your attempt to explain edges! When it comes to AAVE, I tell people what many in my family use to say: “If you don’t know what it means then it ain’t for you!”

I used to get Curlbox but stopped b/c the products had a lot of mineral oils, silicones, etc which are not agreeable for my hair “diet”. I can see a few of these have products that contain these ingredients but some don’t and there are more products here than I used to get in Curlbox. I have a ton of stuff to swap so I may try this too and just swap out the stuff that is bad for my hair.

I really need to get this box. I don’t think I ever heard of it until recently, and it sounds like a great box to try for my dry, curly hair. Thank you so much for your review!

I loved the shine booster and the smell of the twist butter. It was my first box but with so much product left and my second box on the way, I’m glad I only signed up for three months.

I think I’m going to add this to my future want list! I don’t even have curly hair, but all the products I do use for my long, dry hair are designed for curlies and sulfate-free. My hair is in much better condition since I started using curly hair products. And if I get some that are still TOO moisturizing for my hair, at least I have friends with lovely curls to pass them off to.

This looks like a pretty good box, I’m going to see if this month’s box is still available for sell. I’ve been back natural for a year and I’m still in the product junkie phase 🙂 Thanks for the review!
