CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 1

CurlKit
3.2 overall rating

CurlKit is one of very few subscription services dedicated to hair care.  Mainly focused on the needs of curly hair, they provide a variety of quality products that can be hard to find in stores.  CurlKit also has an online shop where you can purchase products found in their subscription.

My box was filled to the brim!  Let’s see what we have this month.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 9

I wanted to point out that there was a substantial amount of “Free Sample” packets this month.  Despite all  of the extra large freebies, there was a number of full sized products too. All the freebies are .5oz or 1oz.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 10

Creme of Nature - Moisturizing Milk Masque Full Size 11.5oz - Value: $9.99

This milk masque is said to combat frizz and deliver softer and shinier curls.  I’ve used it on the kiddos a few times and I have to say I’m impressed.  This does have a very perfumed scent, but it washes away for the most part.

Pampered Roots - Coconut & Honey Hydrating Cocoon 2 In 1 Leave-In Conditioner and Curl Defining Creme 2oz - Value: $3.75

This conditioning creme crosses lines between a moisturizing conditioner and a styling creme. Even though it smelled great and wanted to keep it for myself, but it worked much better in the kiddos looser curl patterns.  We’ve never had this brand before that I can remember, I’m hoping to have more from this brand again in the future to see if anything else works as great in my hair.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 11

Lottabody - Coconut & Shea Oils Wrap Me Foaming Mousse Full Size 7oz - Value: $4.95

We all love this styling mousse.  And it’s a go-to item for me personally.  I think this is the third one I received this year within all the natural hair subscriptions. LOL, I’m set for 2016! I use this in all of our hair types and I love that it doesn’t weigh heavy at all and sets a braided style in hours if your not heavy handed.  So of course, I set my styles overnight!  Who else is heavy handed with their hair products!?

Spongelle - The Spongette in Pink Tiare - Value: $7.00

How cool is this?! Another all in one bath product to try out.  I’m almost out of the Heartland loofa I picked up last month, and I’m excited to try another brand for comparison.  Spongelle says you can expect 5 uses and it’s infused with various fruit and flower oils.  They suggest having one packed for a weekend trip! Great idea.

Doo Gro - Jamaican Black Castor Oil Co-Wash - Value: $1.00

Ok, let’s get thru all these freebies!!  I’m absolutely upset with this sample for a few reasons.  It’s way too small of a packet to only send one and expect a full head of curls to use.  Two, I pulled this out to use on Abigail (she has the least amount of hair), she’s only two, so being the responsible parent that I am, I pulled all the necessary items for bath time with the intent to stay by her side the entire ordeal.  There isn’t a “tab to tear”, ‘tear here”, “bite on this end” anywhere! Nothing! You have to use scissors to open.  It is 2015 still, right? Just checking.  Moving on...

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 12

NuNaat Garlic Magic - Shampoo x2 and Conditioner x2- Value: $8.00

I received this set a few months ago and decided against using them. The mineral oil and sulfates are listed high on the ingredients and we try to avoid both in our hair care routine.  The description says that it’s great for those that battle dandruff and excessive oiliness.

Creme of Nature - Moisturizing Milk Masque x2 - Value: $4.00

If you’re confused right now, so was I.  These are samples of the 11.5 oz tub I just received. I just don’t get it.  They have tear tabs...so that’s good.

Creme of Nature - ButterLicious Curls x2 - Value: $4.00

I’m adding this to my hair stash for the moment.  I’m actually hoping for a full sized version of this product while I’m working on a few others from last month.  It has shea butter, glycerin and argan oil.  You can use it to refresh a braided style or to hydrate hair after cleansing.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 14

Creme of Nature - Argan Buttermilk x3 - Value: $3.00

Ugh! Why did these have to be so small.  I only have one left.  It smells really nice and left the kiddos hair so soft and defined.  I used them in conjunction with the Milk Masque.  It’s says to use on dry curls for rehydration and can be used daily.  This is another reason I dislike sample packs...you can find something you really love...and in a blink, it’s gone. LOL I’m holding on to the last one like a lifesaver on a busy beach.

Creme of Nature - Pudding Perfection x2 - Value: $4.00

I didn’t test this one out this month yet either.  I actually got a single one a few month ago so I’m going to have to try it on the kids.  I generally did not gravitate to “curl enhancers” because I my blended 4C curl pattern.  I will have to try it on the kiddos soon to see if it’s anything like the Pampered Roots leave in we received in this box.

CurlKit Subscription Box Review November 2015 - 15

Verdict: November’s CurlKit had a roughly estimated retail value of $50.00, doubling the monthly subscription cost. Wow, the freebies add up this time!!  It would be a lie to say the foil packets didn’t annoy me.  Some people hate perfume samples, LOL, some people love foil samples.  I just rather have a 1oz jar or miniature bottle than these foil packs.  I’m always excited to try small named brands with great ingredients and wish we could get more full sized products from them in the box.  #smallbusinesssaturday

What did you think of CurlKit this month? Did you receive the same samples? I’d also like to know if you are ingredient conscious when it comes to hair, bath or body care.

@Celicia, I laughed aloud and read your experience with the foil co-wash to my husband, who brought me scissors when I yelled for him from the shower this week. I too realized it was not enough for this head of curls ( the struggle is real!) and I had to combine it with another product to finish the job.

I cancelled after I received the October box. I was already billed for the November box. I received the same products. I gave it to my sister. It was unclear to me if everything was safe for colored hair. My sister has 3B curls and virgin hair. She is happy with the box.

This was my 3rd and final box. I was dissappointed that the same brand, Creme of Nature, was in all 3 boxes. It was a really inconsistent and poorly curated box. September was 9 products, some sample, some full sized. October was 3 full-sized and a foil packet. November was a mess of foil packets and ramdom products. I’m sad I missed August which was a bunch of deluxe samples, exactly what I was hoping for. The idea has potential but they need to work on curation.

Curl Kit was just ok for me in general. I cancelled when I received this box. A bunch of free sample packets….really. The Moisture Mask is actually pretty good. Did not get the Lotta Body. That sponge thingy…meh. The value is not there for me. Maybe I will try them again next year.

On the bright side, you can use those samples at travel sizes!

I really should sub to this. I am a curly haired Caucasian. My 8 year old daughter is African American, with the thickest hair ever! It is hard to find good products for her hair. What doesn’t work for her, might be great for me. Are there any current discount codes?
