Freshly Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - 3

I ordered 4 breakfast items, 1 lunch item, and 1 dinner item. Last month, I chatted with a customer service agent because I couldn't find many vegetarian options.  The agent informed me that their diet was based on the Paleo way of eating and so most of their options include meat for high protein. This is fine - if it's well publicized, but their site didn't have a lot of information on that.  This month, I did find a short article here.  Several people commented last month and mentioned that a few of the ingredients in the meals I ordered weren't Paleo.  I am not an expert, so I will leave that to you to decide!

The shipping is fast and all of my meals came still frozen.  Their packaging is eco-friendly, and they give instructions on how to dispose of all of the packaging ecologically on their website.

Sicilian Style Chicken Parmigiana

This dish has a massive chunk of mozzarella on top, which is always a good sign.  It also has a side of pasta with sauce, but the chicken was definitely the star of this show.  My husband really enjoyed this for dinner one evening.

Homestyle Steel Cut Oatmeal

I wound up with two of these this month by mistake (my mistake, not Freshly's).  I enjoyed this last month, so I decided to get a repeat.  I tend to struggle the most with breakfast meals - that's typically the meal I go out to eat for the most.  So I enjoy getting these - I can just grab them and go to work!  The oatmeal is good, but it does have walnuts in it.  If you're not a nut person, I have forewarned you!  This also has raisins in it.  While I'm not normally a fan of nuts, I do enjoy the texture that it gives the oatmeal!  I added a sprinkle of cinnamon on top because I can never have enough, but it was very good as is.

Herb Crusted Cod

This was a massive piece of fish.  There wasn't a side dish with this one, as it seems there is with quite a few of the meals, but the fish is definitely filling enough.

Garden Omelette

I don't think I'm a huge fan of reheated eggs, particularly after they've been frozen.  The texture of this and the frittata was a little off to me, which I expected a little, but I wasn't too fond of it.  Both egg dishes I chose had quite a bit of water in the bottom after reheating, but maybe this is common with reheated eggs - I'm not sure!  I couldn't pick out any particularly strong flavors in the omelette, but it was a solid breakfast.  The inside was stuffed full of broccoli and mushrooms - so it made me feel good about my breakfast choices today!

Homestyle Steel Cut Oatmeal

Roasted Red Pepper & Zucchini Frittata

This was excellent.  I wasn't a huge fan of the frittata and omelette that I got last month, so I was wary of giving this a try - but I LOVE roasted red peppers, so I had to do it.  I'm glad I did!  The roasted red pepper flavor came through a lot more than the zucchini did, which I am totally ok with.  I even shared this one with two of my coworkers, and they enjoyed it as well.  Which leads me to...

The portion size for these meals is...very large for me.  Granted, I do tend to eat 6+ smaller things a day versus 3 large meals, but still, these portions are huge.  There's no way I could eat the entire oatmeal in one sitting.  In fact, I could probably break it, the omelette, and the frittata up into 3 separate meals each!

Verdict:  This month was better than last month for me!  I knew what to expect going in (mostly meat options), but I was hoping against hope there would be a larger switch up in the menu this month. Quite a few of the choices remained the same from last month - the dishes I chose though were very good and massive in portion.  I still think Freshly is a bit expensive for what you're getting.  This would be a great option for someone who doesn't have time to cook healthfully for themselves, and had the money to spend on this service.  I think it has a lot of potential and I'm eager to see how it evolves in the next few months.

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

The portions are so large because it’s 1.5 portions when you look at the nutritional information

thanks for the review. seems like people should maybe stick to the lunches & dinners since those have a higher “value” in terms of ingredients and effort to cook. eggs are so cheap & quick to prepare so the breakfasts are kind of a wash overall considering the cost and the taste. i do love how many food subscriptions there are out there now. i got a few (other brands) for family & friends during times when they were too busy to shop or cook, and they loved it.

since you are not a big breakfast person but try, look up budget byte’s baked oatmeal dishes. some of my friends are now in love with them.

oh, and oatmeal is definitely not paleo, so that’s probably what people were talking about. in case you’re interested, paleo is no grains or dairy, focusing on lots of veggies and moderate protein, with small amounts of naturally sweet things like fruit, honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar.

I have to second the rec for budget byte’s baked oatmeal. I should try some of the newer recipes she put up

Honestly, I don’t think I could do this even though I love the paleo diet. Unless I was a complete shut-in this food would probably gross me out!.
Lol but, thanks for the review Liz! I’m a new follower but, I love all your info on the different boxes. So far I’ve subbed for Birchbox, ipsy, Beautyfix, & Allure through you. Oh and I got the Amazon & Walmart boxes! I wanted to get the Target one but, I didn’t get your email until it was too late. Sad face. I’m getting so many good deals now so thanks! Plus I’ve received a few things I can gift to someone so that’s cool two because, now I don’t even have to worry about finding a gift for anyone!

I agree. I’d like to see the meals after they have been cooked. As for the eggs being watery after being heated, I have found that sadly most are if they have been frozen.

Looks interesting, but I would have liked to have seen what it looked like cooked. Kind of hard to tell with just pictures of packaging.

I definitely agree with the portion size–it’s a massive! I tried Freshly for a couple of weeks, but found it was just too much food for me. I usually eat pretty normally-sized meals, so I guess it’s all the protein//large amounts of food. I either had to divide up portions before microwaving the meal, or waste a lot of food (I dislike microwaving meals a second time).

Though I’m not vegetarian, I still eat very

Great review! Thank you so much for mentioning the not a lot of vegetarian options because that means this sub clearly isn’t for me. HOWEVER, you have me wanting to make oatmeal for breakfast so thank you! I’m going to try and add raisins and walnuts!
