HML-March 2016-first look

This is the type of box that would be perfect for a girls night in (preferably with wine) or for a fun family project. I love the blue confetti strips in the box.

Each Home Made Luxe box comes with step-by-step, detailed instructions on how to assemble the project. There is also a link to an instructional video which is a nice added source to have! I found the instructions to be very helpful and I liked how they included a lot of visuals.

Materials included:

HML-March 2016-products1

Crafters Acrylic Paint in Spun Gold, E6000 Industrial Strength Adhesive, 842 Paint Brush

HML-March 2016-products2

8 inch Styrofoam disc, 12 gauge gold wire and 7 inch round mirror

HML-March 2016-step1

The first step was to paint the styrofoam disc with at least two coats of  gold paint.

I absolutely love gold and this a beautiful shade.

HML-March 2016-wires

While the paint was drying I went ahead and cut the wire into 22 inch strips. The instructions said to cut 30 strips but there was only enough wire for 24 strips. Next, I bended all of the wires into a leaf shape per instructions.

HML-March 2016-wiresclose

Once all the wires were bent I stuck them on the most outer part of the styrofoam disc. The disc was still drying a little on the back side which is why you see a  paper towel.

At first I wasn’t too sure how it was going to look with my craft skills, but so far it looks great! I'm so close to the finish line at this point. I put the E6000 super glue on the back of the mirror so now all that is left is to stick it on the Styrofoam disk.

HML-March 2016-complete

BAM, voila, success! I was beyond happy with my results. I didn’t think it would look anything like the picture but I think it turned out close enough. I also like how it took me under an hour and looks legit- like it is store bought and not a craft project. I can’t wait to hang this in my bathroom!

Verdict: I think the Home Made Luxe box is really cool! Although they didn't include enough wire for 30 strips, I had enough to still make it look great.  I’m not the typical crafter but I really enjoyed this project! This box is perfect for someone like me: someone who wants to be crafty and DIY’y but is too lazy to get the supplies or look up a project. I love the ease of the creators already picking out the project and most importantly: doing the supplies shopping for you. This project made me feel accomplished, artsy and proud of my creation. Now I'm ready to do another project!

Has this sub box gone out of business? I tried to checkout their website, only to get a message stating they are undergoing a facelift.

Hey Amanda! We are definitely still in business. Just revamping our website. It should be up and running now!

Considering you can buy the supplies at Michael’s for about $10, the cost for this box is insane. Think about what you get – a styrofoam disk, a $3 acrylic paint, a length of wire and a round piece of mirror. $10 for supplies might be too generous. But if it provides an hour of fun, it may be worth it for someone who wants to venture into crafting but is unsure how.

Hi Beatrice! Thanks for your comment. I just wanted to quickly clarify that the 12 gauge gold wire is the most expensive thing in the box. The box included 82 feet of wire, you can currently purchase 10 feet of this thick wire at michaels for $7.99. You would need to buy over 8 packages to complete this project for a total over $63.92 just for the wire! This does not include the price of the foam, mirror, E6000 glue, paint or paint brush. Additionally shipping is included in the cost of the box. Shipping costs $10-12 per box. We definitely feel we provide great value in our boxes, not only in materials but in the convenience of having it delivered, written and video instructions and tried, tested and curated gorgeous projects. I do hope you would give our box a try! http://www.michaels.com/permanently-colored-wire-brass-10ft-12-gauge/10390896.html?productsource=PDPZ1

This looks like a very cool box. I think for the price point they should include something extra in the box. Not sure what but $40 is a bit expensive for what you get, I think. I’m excited to see more reviews of this box.
I’m not sure when you started writing for MSA but I like it because you are covering boxes I haven’t seen reviews for. Nice job and welcome!

I really love the idea of this – it’s exactly the type of sub I wished existed, so I’m delighted to see this.

The original mirror seems to have at least 75 petals, but I imagine that would put too many holes in the styrofoam.

But the example in their photo uses around 45–50 petals, and they only wanted to send supplies for 30, and didn’t even send that. So even if you had received enough for 30 petals, it would never look like their picture.

They cheaped out on supplies, and would have complained about it if I had received this box. One main thing I look for in craft kits is whether it’s possible to achieve the same results as the example, and in this case it’s not.

I do agree with what the above commenter stated and therefore would need to see more reviews based on this project. I think this box could be fabulous for people that love DIY. My only other concern would be with the price, so with the month to month if it auto renews will there be an ability to skip a month or would we need to cancel and start? Committing to a longer sub is kinda scary when there would be DIY’s that someone would simply find no place for or no gifting choice to someone we know would love it done and or to do For themselves. Of course if it’s consistent with ones likes then we know it’s great to sign up for longer.

Wow! This looks really neat! I am thinking maybe I could try to do it myself with a trip to Michael’s?

Helen

That looks fabulous!
I went into Anthro last year to buy that very mirror. The one they brought me already had some broken petals so I didn’t bother.
Now I can make my own!!

Awesome job! It looks really good! I like crafting, but don’t like the hours of labor. This project looks impressive especially since it took under an hour to complete!
