Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs. Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size. Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds). This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 84 pounds).
Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Here’s a first look inside. I like the quote but, in my house, there’s more cat hair than dog hair in the décor.

Included was an information card detailing the items for the month.
Paw Shape Squeaky Dog Toy – Value $2.19
I would’ve expected this to have a higher value but I think it is discontinued. I could only find it in wholesale lots on eBay (what I linked to) and for ridiculous prices ($50+) from third party sellers on Amazon. I suspect the true retail value lies somewhere between those two extremes…
Pet Qwerks Toys Krinkle Squeak Newspaper – Value $7.50
This is a cute idea. There’s no stuffing, just some crinkly paper inside. It’s also big enough for a large dog (maybe not a giant breed, though). I’m happy the toys this month were more size appropriate.
Natural Value Puffed Cheese Treats (1.25 oz) – Value $1.57
These are made in the USA. Although they do have cheese in them, white rice is the first ingredient. Still, there’s no wheat, corn, or soy!
Loving Pets It’s Purely Natural Chicken Tenders (4 oz) – Value $5.77
These are free of soy and wheat and are made in the USA. They also contain rice, but it’s brown rice. I don’t know if whole grains are better for dogs in the same way that they’re better for people. I will have to pass these along since Nyx can’t have chicken due to her IBD.
Loving Pets Vegitopia Sliced Carrots (5 oz) – Value $8.49
These are a product of Peru and the only ingredient is carrots. They are probably OK for Nyx’s IBD although she has not been a huge fan of carrots in the past. But, I have definitely had dogs before who LOVED carrots, so these will probably work for a lot of people.
FFD Pets Unscented Wipes (15 ct) – Value $3.99
Wipes are always handy to have. Mr. Kitty and Nyx both have inflammatory bowel disease and some days they just seem to smell a little bad. I think they get bad breath from digestive system issues and then lick themselves. It’s not a constant thing but it happens from time to time and sometimes it is not convenient to give them baths. (Nyx has to take a bath outside with the hose, so we have to wait for the weather to cooperate. And Mr. Kitty is a cat who does not like baths.) So it is good to have wipes on hand.
I thought Nyx playing with this would make a nice picture but it didn’t even last a full minute…
Here is Nyx with the newspaper.
And here is the newspaper after Nyx had it for a few minutes…
Verdict: I calculated a value of $29.51 for the March 2016 Surprise My Pet dog subscription box. That is above the cost of the box and is an even better deal with a longer subscription or a coupon code. I wish the toys had been more durable, though they were definitely size-appropriate this month, which is always nice.
