PourMore-June-2016-101

According to the PourMore website, “we include literature with your monthly box explaining the details and heritage of that particular spirit. You are sure to enjoy not only the beverage but the acquisition of history with your spirit each month.” I didn’t receive anything in my box apart from the Scotch, though (and a lot of packing peanuts).

PourMore-June-2016-Distillery

Since I didn’t receive any information with my shipment, I decided to do my own research about the bottle I received.

The Dalwhinnie distillery is located in the Scottish highlands, and is the highest-elevation working distillery in Scotland. The village of Dalwhinnie is one of the coldest villages in the UK, and is known for winter walking and mountaineering.

PourMore-June-2016-History

The site for the distillery was chosen for its proximity to clear spring water and peat (from the surrounding bogs). It was originally opened in 1897 and has become known for producing whisky with a “light, heathery flavor.”

Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch - MSRP $109.99 (on sale for $99.99)

My husband is an avid hiker, and he loves to trek through Cairngorm National Park (right near Dalwhinnie) when he’s home visiting family in Scotland. He was thrilled to see this bottle in our shipment, since he’s driven past the Dalwhinnie distillery many times but hasn’t ever stopped in for a tasting!

PourMore-June-2016-Label

This special “Distillers Edition” malt was distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2015. (So, aged 17 years!)

It’s “light copper in color and has a flavor of oak and delectable spices. It also has a unique sweet finish with hints of sugar and almonds.”

PourMore-June-2016-BackLabel

My husband and I both really like the flavor of this whisky. It’s smooth, spicy, sweet, and very easy to drink.

Verdict: I’m surprised and impressed by the bottle of Scotch included in my first box from PourMore. It’s delicious, and I like that they opted to include a special edition bottle. I’m also very impressed with the value. It’s too early to tell what the subscription will offer long-term, but this is definitely a great place to start! My only complaint is that my box did not include any supplemental materials. For me, a big part of a subscription like this is the educational content, and I’m disappointed to see that they were left out of my box. Hopefully, PourMore will follow up with electronic content. (If so, I’ll update the comments section.) Despite that, I’m quite pleased with the bottle I was sent, and I’m very excited to see what future shipments will bring!

I got this subscription for my birthday (the Bourbon of the month option). I received a bottle of Maker’s Mark, which was disappointing as it is one of the most well-known brands of bourbon around and I was hoping for something more unique. Similar to you, I also did not receive the promised literature (in fact the box came from a 3rd party online distributor and not from PourMore). When I emailed them to ask why I had only received the whiskey with nothing else in the box, I was ignored. We decided to cancel. I could have purchased the bottle sent to me for less than the cost of the subscription. I would have paid a premium if given the “experience” of the details about the distillery and tasting notes, but without that, I would rather just go to my local liquor store. Also, the poor customer service is a major turn off.

Hey Christiane,

I am very sorry you had a bad experience. The bottle we set was not your regular Markers Mark, but Makers Mark Cask Strength. The bottles look very similar but i can assure they are not the same. The Cask Strength version is extremely popular and simply unavailable in most locations so we were very happy to get our hands on a shipment for our customers. I am sorry you did not like that! The MRSP for the Cask Strength Makers Mark is $69.99 which is well above the cost of the subscription. Our goal is to find and serve excellent whiskey’s. Some months we may find a rare or special whiskey that is less than the cost of the box and other months a bottle that is well above the cost of the box. We try to average this out over a six month period.

This confusion is mostly our fault as you most certainly should have received our review and informational insert. We have received this feedback from a couple of other subscribers and are in the processing of investigating what is going on (we are proud of our research and want you to get it!) We are glad to offer you a free month to try us again. We will be reaching out to you directly in addition to posting here.

Cheers and Pourmore!

I’d like to clear up a few things in regards to Pourmore’s response…
1.) I appreciate the offer for a free month (though I have yet to be contacted directly to validate it is genuine) but I wish it had come weeks ago when our email to customer service was ignored and not only now in response to a less than complimentary public review.
2.) I understand the bottle was Cask strength. My concern was the commonality of the brand. We expected to receive bottles from lesser known distilleries.
3.) We googled the 3rd party where the bottle was sent from and the listed price was $59.99 which is much less than the $79 subscription price. Even if it had been $69, that is still less than the subscription price. And all without the promised “experience” of the notes.

I’m excited to see another alcohol subscription being reviewed. I forgot the last review I saw where they don’t send out bottles that are above the box cost so I’m really glad to see this one did! I will wait for your future reviews and hopefully see the trend continue. I’m want to find a nice box for my husband for Christmas. Let me know if there is another box similar to this that is good about sending alcohol above box value. Can’t wait for next months box! I’d be interested in seeing what the higher tiers offer too!

Is the price for just one bottle for one month? I am not an expert on alcohol beverages but that seems excessively high to me.

I agree although she did save $21 ($11, if bought on sale) with this box. Personally, I just keep a look out for liquor reviews when seeking a new bottle. On the other hand, if you have disposable and love liquor then I don’t see why a sub like this wouldn’t be a perfect fit for you. Perfect strokes for perfect folks.

did you have to be home to accept the package? I never ordered liquor online so I don’t know how the procedure goes.

also, do you by any chance know if we’re allowed to switch between different packages of same price level (like scotch this month and bourbon the next)? I looked around the website but they don’t mention this.

Hey Jeein,

If you are interested in a variety of Whiskey’s it would be best to sign up for the Whiskey of the month club. Rather than specializing in just Bourbons or just Sctoch, this club includes both as well as Irish, Canadian, Japanese whiskey, and more!

Cheers and Pourmore!

I order from
Naked wines.com and they require 21+ signature so I’m guessing this would be similar?

Hey All,

Glad to respond to these comments. Unluckily U.S. alcohol shipment laws are very strict and differ by State (and sometimes even by county/municipality!). We wish we could include more of you in our service but are also keen on following local laws.

Most states do require someone 21 years or older sign for the package. Luckily, our carrier, FedEx, allows for scheduling deliveries so you can communicate with them by e-mail/web interface/ phone to get your shipment delivered at a convenient time.

Some of our competitors deliver to more states that they are allowed to but be careful! While enforcement is rare, you personally could get in legal trouble for breaking state liquor laws in addition to company (depending on the state).

If you have any further questions, please drop us a line at [email protected]

Cheers and Pourmore!

oh… nvm they don’t ship to NJ (and other half of US). I guess its liquor policy thing. I love whiskey but I never have time/make the effort to go to the liquor store and look around for new things to try so I wanted this to work. bummer 🙁
