Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to build out your makeup collection on the cheap!

Ipsy-012

This is one of my top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out my list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2016 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: Ipsy

The Cost: $10 a month (free shipping)

Ipsy-023

Each month, ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items. This month we get a holographic bag with a umbrella print on top. I like it!

Now onto the items!

Ipsy-047

Mellow Cosmetics Baked Eyeshadow in Plum - FULL SIZE! Value $8

Ipsy-053

I LOVE the pigment and subtle shimmer of this eyeshadow! It has a nice gold undertone too - very wearable and still unique in my eyeshadow collection. (Swatched in lower photo.)

Ipsy-031

bareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Swag - 2 ml Value $8.30

Ipsy-035

Ipsy-039

This is my favorite discovery in the box! This swag color is a super wearable mauve, and I love the formula, too. It has a chocolate cake batter scent, goes on so smoothly, and the matte finish isn't nearly as drying as some matte lip products I've tried. I ended up applying a clear lip balm over it for a little extra moisture, though.

Here is the lipcolor and eyeshadow swatched:

Ipsy-058

The colors even look good together!

Ipsy-015

Shray Queen Bee Mask - Value $6

Shray Ms. Amazing Mask - Value $6

Ipsy-016

This sheet mask is honey-infused and designed for treating acne and redness. I've sampled non-sheet honey masks before, and they can get pretty sticky, so I was hoping this one would bring the benefits of honey without the stickiness!

And I lucked out - no stickiness, and this mask was pretty gentle and hydrating, too. I also like that this is a 10-minute mask - I don't have as much patience as I should with masks!

Ipsy-017

I've sampled this Ms. Amazing mask before, and it is also very hydrating and gentle. It is scented with fragrance though, so if you have sensitive skin and need to avoid perfume in skinare products, I wouldn't recommend it.

Ipsy-026

Trust Fund Beauty Nail Polish in No Filter - FULL SIZE! Value $15

This is my new favorite nail polish color. It's such a subtle grey/lilac creme - a unique take on a neutral nail.

And the formula is great, too. I was surprised to see I got almost full-coverage with only one coat. Here it is on with two coats:

Ipsy-062

Ipsy-030

Not Soap, Radio Joy Inducing Hand/Body Lotion - 20 ml Value $1

This lotion is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and the lemon + sugar scent is so fresh! I just wish the sample size was larger - I already want more!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $44. That's pretty great for a $10 subscription box (And that's not counting the value of the makeup bag!) My favorite item is the bareMinerals liquid lipstick, with the Trust Fund Beauty Nail Polish at a close second - but really I like and will use everything!

This was my first month and I’m disappointed. Your bag was way better than mine.

This is my first month of Ipsy and am surprised by how many disappointed people there are here. I read and watch a couple of youtube videos where most people were happy with the bags. I wasn’t expecting much out of this since its only $10 a month but I was actually very happy with what I got. I received, too faced hangover primer, luxie small angled eye brush, banana powder (my fav & full size), OFRA full lip liner, and Be Kind night face cream. I thought the bag was cute, also seemed smaller than I thought it would be. Maybe there is such differences in the bags because of different shipping or ordering times. I subscribed mine in middle of the month and got it on the 21st.

My bag was pretty boring this month, but this is the only bag that has really disappointed me, so I guess I shouldn’t be complaining! 😛

Sara

J Cat Beauty perfect duo brow pencil (Perfect timing, just ran out of my brow product)

Eya Nye Get glossed hair serum

I got the same nail polish and I like it. It’s cute, it’s full size, and it’s vegan. I’m wearing it on my toes right now 🙂

I also got the mellow eyeshadow but in Coco, and honestly I would’ve been okay with either color. They’re both really great. Ipsy was a definite hit this month for me, unlike Birchbox.

I am so in love with your bag. I love everything and the colors. I use to have Ipsy for a few months last year and really loved it but after a few months it kind of south. I do love makeup more so then shampoo and conditioner and face creams and stuff like that. Aleast in a subscription box. I have to cancel Allure even though I dont really really want to and I may just go with Ispy for a while.

I’ve been on a really great streak with ipsy recently. This month I got:

bareMinerals gen nude – wasn’t too excited at first because I can’t stand most of their lip products but This. Is. Amazing.
Mellow baked eyeshadow in plum – never would have picked the shade myself but actually really love it; it looks so pretty on the outer corner and is much more wearable than the name suggests
palmetto mask – tiny sample but worked fine
skyn iceland lotion – wouldn’t buy it, but its very cooling and its been SO HOT the past couple days I’ve been putting it on just for that reason
small angle eye brush – like the quality of these brushes but not entirely sure how to use this one

Also, I’ve been eyeing the Meet Matt(e) Trimony palette from thebalm for awhile, and just got it the other day as an ipsy offer for $22…literally half price!

This has been SO much better for me recently than birchbox. I really think that how you review products plays a much bigger role in what you get than your beauty profile.

BriM

I feel the same. I’m not happy with my July BB but I find my Ipsy bags so much cooler. I don’t wear eyeshadow and I got the Meet Matt in the deep brown/red and I don’t even mind. They’ve been impressing me lately while BB has been underwhelming.

Serena

I wish they would stop putting the word Ipsy on the makeup bags. I don’t have any use for a bag with that word printed on it. It’s not really a brand you want to flaunt or carry with you, and it takes away from the cute designs they choose.

Reply ButtonReply

Laura

Sometimes it is only on the zipper pull. The cute woven style bag as well as several others did’t say Ipsy on the bag.

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

I haven’t gotten my bag yet, but everything its showing to be coming I’m excited about, well with the exception of the mascara.

it shows:
The angle eye brush, any brush is welcome for me I like being able to build
a collection of brushes without spending tons of money.

the tre’stique highlight stick, the meet matt eyeshadow(which I was under the impression everybody was getting that), the organic surge eye gel, and the model co mascara.

This is my third month and I have been pleased with all so far.

KC

I may not *love* all of Ipsy’s specific choices for me this month. However, my bag is usually pretty on point with my preferences, with only the occasional, ‘huh??’.

In July I received :
– theBalm eyeshadow in the less-horrible dark plum. (Will never use, headed for trash)
– Not Soap, Radio lemon hand cream (smells yummy)
– Professional Eyeshadow brush (cool, I like brushes)
– Shray Ms. Amazing mask (love the hydration)
– Shray Queen Bee mask (don’t have acne or oily skin, so this variety trash bound)
– TooFaced Hangover Replenishing primer (I’m a fan of TF, so excited to try)

OMG!!! I would have LOVED to have gotten that eye shadow color! I got the burgundy and was like, WTW???! But that plum… swoon worthy!!!

Danelle

Bag showed up. No hair oil in the bottle but it is all over my items including a brush that soaked it up and damn mascara again!!!! Some got amazing things. I. Did. Not. Shampoo for curly hair too. Ummmmm not really curly here.

Reply ButtonReply

MLog

Same here.
I was like Curly hair????
I will let it slide this one time. But other than this match, my bag seems really different from everyone so far.

Too faced: Hangover Primer
Skyn: Cooling daily lotion
The Balm: Eyeshadow in Matt Moskowitz
Thrive: Black waterproof eyeliner.
Briogeo: Curl Charisma

I feel so so about my bag this month. Hopefully next month excitest me more.

Christina

I got the exact same bag minus the mascara. I’m pretty happy with my ipsy bag this month!

Reply ButtonReply

BriM

This will be my 3rd Ipsy and I’m really happy with what I see Im getting. So far Ipsy seems to be paying attention and I have no complaints 🙂

I’m an Ipsy newbie (2 bags so far) and have been really impressed by the good match I’ve been getting. Not sure if this is just coincidence, or if their algorithm is working really well for me. The weird thing is that, out of the 20+ July bag posts I’ve read online, I have not yet seen anyone with the exact same bag. The closest I’ve seen had 4/5 of the same products.

I got:
1. TheBalm Matt Moskowitz : love
2. Luxie Beauty small angled eye brush: love
3. tre’StiQue highlight stick: like
4. Ofra Cosmetics Maya: like
5. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré: meh, but will be good for traveling

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole

bag twins! Except that I got the The Balm in Matt Kumar
and the Ofra lipliner in “silk”

Reply ButtonReply

Sherry

Your bag is much better than mine ?
I didn’t get any full size products except a brush….. I personally don’t like getting brushes ( I have tons!!!) It was a sad month for me and ipsy.

Reply ButtonReply

Tracy

Boo ?, that does stink ! Have you done the questionnaire on Ipsy? I got lousy months but once I started giving them feedback monthly , they slowly got better and better . Just a though ?.

Hope it gets better !

Stacey

I would have loved the nail or lip (both are things checking in my profile) but I received the Balm eyeshadow and a waterproof eyeliner and brush (not selected). I have received eyeshadow in my last two bags and have not wanted but would love any lip products. This is my third bag and I have yet to be thrilled by one. Maybe if I can ever sign up on Swaps (seem to be on a waitlist) I can start swapping them out.

I received the envelope, but no makeup bag. Kind of frustrated. Will let you how Ipsy remedies this situation.

MzBev

They will replace your bag. Their CS is pretty amazing! It just sucks that it even happened. Good luck!

Reply ButtonReply

lcleekball

This bag looks awesome! Despite the fact that I have upped my age by 15 years and clearly indicated my preference for skincare items as opposed to make-up, I continue to receive brow pencils, mascara, and eyeliner. This month I got all three. I removed ALL of those things from my preferences months ago. I am going to give it another month and see if they do better. I have not been excited about a bag since my very first one.

This is a great bag – I know a lot of people don’t like getting polish in sub boxes, but I love nail polish and I feel like I hardly ever get it (with the exception of Julep of course).

I subscribed to Ipsy for about 6 months back in 2014. I resubbed for this month because I am trying to build up my make up brush collection and I ALWAYS (lovingly) got brushes from Ipsy and my first month back they delivered!

I got:
theBalm eyeshadow
Organic Surge eye gel (love, love getting eye creams in boxes because I never buy it myself despite knowing how important it is – thankfully BECAUSE of boxes I haven’t HAD to buy any!)
tre’StiQue highlight stick
Model Co mascara
Luxie Beauty small angled eye brush

This is REALLY typical of what I would get in the past which is sort of why I unsubbed (I got SO many eye shadows) – but you know, I’m pretty happy with this. Everything will be used and I’m pleased to add another brush to my collection.

I hope I get a bag like yours, this is my first month figured I give then a try since i cancelled bb.

Reply ButtonReply

Rosa

I canceled after last months disaster. I will still be getting this…excuse (yawn) bag. More to add to Christmas I guess.

Shelby

Hello, I’m very interested in trying Ispy, but was wondering if after a few months and I’m not wanting to continue is there a cancellation fee? If so, do you know what the cancellation fee is please? Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

The Balm eyeshadow, Eva NYC hair serum, Model co mascara, Trestique highlighter and a Luxie 215 small angle brush. I really liked everything, especially the eyeshadow!

This is a portion of a customer service email I received this month after 1/5 samples met my Ipsy match, leaving here for reference to some questions regarding the algorithm etc for matching:

“…our ipsyMatch algorithm is not new at all, however each month we start from scratch and pick the profile data and reviews that best correlate to each product in that month’s selection. There is a balance to avoid overwhelming the system, while still getting a majority of the products to the right people.

We have to take into account that each product has a specific number of units and the value of each member’s Glam Bags cannot be extremely different. This means there are not in infinite number of possible combinations each month.

Our system takes your quiz selections as a “positive” which means that you’re more likely to receive the things you select. Anything you don’t select is not interpreted as a “negative,” which means that our system will not ensure you never receive that type of item. So even if you have no mascara or eyeshadow product selections on your quiz, our system does not read this as “never match (your name) with a mascara or eyeshadow product.”

Our goal is to allow our members to play and discover new products while still offering a level of personalization through ipsyMatch. 100% of product matches cannot be perfect, but we’re always seeking to raise the bar. We’re a sampling service and, so its low commitment to receive products valued much higher than the $10 you pay.”

Was the more pertinent info regarding their explanation if anyone was curious.

Thanks for sharing this, it was helpful. My daughter and I just receive our bags and they were the exact same. Same product, colors, and shade. This was surprising to me because we have completely different profiles, different color and texture of hair, and different color eyes. I was not expecting us to get the exact same products. I was disappointed, but I am going to give it a few months before unsubscribing.

Ace

I think depending on who emails you back determines the answer you get. I was told they have no way of making the bags have similar values. I like Ipsy, but I don’t like that some people get bags worth $100 while others are worth $30 in the same month.

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

For me it’s not about value, some months I have had $86 value bags and some months $30. It’s about which items most match what I like for me. This one literally had one single item (tools) that I had checked when I had plenty of options all around. I realize we aren’t guaranteed a full match bag with nothing we don’t want, but they didn’t even try to match me with one of the guaranteed items first ones (for example I didn’t get either of the two brow products). They are sending me the powder I guess as a way of making amends, as I have subscribed just about since the second or third bag.
