Popsugar-017

POPSUGAR Must Have is a monthly lifestyle subscription box for women. Each month they send a mix of items from categories like beauty, fashion, food, fitness, home, etc.

Popsugar-020 (1)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Popsugar-061

The Subscription Box: POPSUGAR Must Have

The Cost: 39.95 a month

The Products: “Must Have” items for women selected by POPSUGAR editors. (Fitness, Home, Beauty, Food, and more)

Check out all of my POPSUGAR Must Have reviews and the Women’s Subscription Box Directory!

Popsugar-066

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing the items included.

Popsugar-087

Sachajuan Hair in the Sun - Value $32

I've sampled Sachajuan thanks to the Net-A-Porter box, and the Nina Garcia Subscription Box, so I already knew I loved the brand, but this product was new to me. It protects your hair from UV rays and won't wash out in the pool or ocean. It also doubles as a styling cream.

I love it as a styling cream since the formula is so light - it didn't weigh down my hair or make it look greasy. Plus the scent is fantastic. (And the fact that it is protecting my hair from UV rays is a nice bonus!)

Popsugar-085

House of Pom Emoji Cocktail Napkins - Value $25

These cocktail napkins are made exclusively for POPSUGAR and they are 100% cotton. I think they are really cute and fun! (Confession - I consider myself an avid emoji user, and I didn't even recognize the cocktail or flower emoji. I guess I need to branch out from my typical SPOILER ? emoji!)

The sunglasses emoji is perfect for summer, too. Here it is "in action:"

Popsugar-076

Michael Stars Porcelain Skinny Scarf in White - Value $30

When I saw the spoiler for this scarf, I was a little concerned that it seemed similar to the sarong/scarf in the June POPSUGAR Must Have box. But this scarf is a completely different style in terms of how you'd wear it. It's super skinny (it measures 6 inches across), and I personally like it best as a headband!

Popsugar-134

And it is the perfect length for wrapping around twice. Here's the easiest way I've found to tie on a headscarf/headband:

collage-popsugar-headband

When you bring the two sides of the scarf up to the top of your head, cross them, then wrap them down the opposite way and tie at the base of your neck.

Popsugar-090

Pintrill Pineapple Pin - Value $12

Enamel pins seem to be very on-trend this summer, so I was expecting to see one in a subscription box soon! I haven't bought any yet, but I definitely would have grabbed this one if it was still in stock!

Popsugar-092

This pin is gold plated brass with a black rubber pin back. It's super tiny, too!

I have to admit while I think the enamel pin trend is really cute, I haven't exactly figured out the best way to wear a pin yet. But here it is on my denim jacket as one idea:

Popsugar-155

I think it could also look cute on a backpack or purse. Any other suggestions?

Popsugar-100

Sunnylife Inflatable Swan Drink Holder - Value $18

Popsugar-160

This is another fun item and it feels very Summer 2016 to me. (Plus I like the Sunnylife brand and I was hoping to see more of it in subscription boxes this summer.)

The downside to me for this item is that we don't have a pool, but I decided it could make a pretty useful/adorable picnic accessory to ensure your glasses don't topple over!

Popsugar-203

Plus if you are having a picnic in a crowded place, just tell your friends to look for the swan!

Popsugar-095

European Wax Center Oh My Brow! Brow Highlighter in Pearl - Value $19

This also came with a card for a free brow wax. From what I can tell, they also offer that free on their site, so I won't be counting it to the value of the box.

Here is a closer look at the highlighter pencil:

Popsugar-166

It has a highlighter and smudger, and the color/shimmer is a subtle and wearable look for me. Here it is swatched:

Popsugar-107

POPSUGAR also recommends trying it out on the inner corners of your eyes, your cheekbones and above your cupid's bow.

Popsugar-077

Joe Chips Classic Sea Salt Retro Chips - Value $1.50

POPSUGAR is probably the best box I can think of when it comes to consistently sending delicious snacks. These chips were another hit with me and my husband Eric. They are crunchy, salty, and everything else a potato chip should be!

Lastly, this box also included a "Special Extra" $20 gift card to Trove Jewelry:

Screen Shot 2016-07-12 at 8.36.21 PM

(The code doesn't apply to shipping and all products on the site cost more than $20, so I'm not going to count it toward the value of the box.)

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $137. With the swan, enamel pin, and emoji napkins, I think this is one of the most trendy boxes POPSUGAR has done, so it's a little riskier and I can see how it might not be for everyone, but so far I'm having fun with it! Plus I really appreciate that POPSUGAR sent out a summer hair product that wasn't a wave spray!

What do you think of the July POPSUGAR Must Have Box?

Liz, you always do such great reviews! I always love every PopSugar box I get and I wait until I open it before I read your review. I like being suprised. But after I read it I feel doubly lucky with the items I received because you have such great desciptions and ideas for the items.

Thanks for all of the great reviews!
I wanted to mention that the free brow wax is for new AND existing customers (it says that on the card on the bottom). The free wax European Wax Center offers is only for first time customers. So if you are already a customer (like myself) you can get a free wax which adds value to the box for me☺.

I was really disappointed with this months box.

I have been a PS subscriber since July 2013. I recently had a garage sale and realized I was selling three years of Popsugar box miscellany that I never used. The sad part is, I couldn’t get rid of most of it for .50c at a garage sale!!

AND this box was just another box full of chachkis. For me, its more about using the items than dollar value of the box, PS isnt the value it used to be.

Killin’ it with this new review approach. You really stepped up your game Liz. Looking great in the photos too.

Agreed! You are stunning. Love this post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great review. I feel like I hardly use to see you but now your back in action and you always bring your furry friend which is always such a bonus. I also love the clean lines of your photos too. Its great for really seeing the product and its colors and so on. I can not wait to get my 20 dollar box. I have only ordered one mini from PopSugar and that was it even though I normally am in love with this supscription sometimes 40 can be to much for my broke asssss. I also think fall and winter boxes just scream me me me. I hope they have more of these 20 dollars boxes every few months, and can the mini…… Am I right?

Reply ButtonReply

Missy

Didn’t it say this box was $40 though without the coupon? Am I missing something cuz I would totally want a $20 box from PopSugar!

Christina

There was a post for the $20 mystery box On 7/6/16

Britt?

Liz~ I’m so sad. I use that flower next to my name on almost (if not every) comment I make on here!!! ??? But, I still love you! This was a great review. I think because it was my first month without PSMH in my life.. Now I want to order again. It was my gateway box.. It’s right up my alley. Cute stuff, I’d probably never buy but would be expected to own. (if that makes sense?)
xo?

Britt! I didn’t realize it was the same flower! (The pink flower always reminds me of you when I see it 🙂 ) But this one reads lilac to me so it didn’t register! Oops!

Glad you enjoyed the review! 🙂

It’s this review that makes me appreciate the contents of this box even more! Love the head wrap idea! I’m going to turn it in the side for a different look ?
I have been underwhelmed though with the past few months boxes. I finally subscribed and I haven’t been wowed. I ordered the Jan and Dec box on sale and fell head over heels for Popsugar. The Jan canvas bin and organizing book “sparked joy” for me. But recent boxes have not.
I have a feeling I’ll like the Mystery box better than this months.

I completely agree… I always come back and read your review *after* receiving my box .. just to get your take and positive attitude on everything in there! I am excited about the box and I love your headband idea AND your swan-picnic idea!

I got a flamingo pin from Urban Outfitters. I’m so disappointed – I really wanted the pineapple!

Reply ButtonReply

MV

I also got the flamingo. I emailed Support right away and they said it was a mistake and they would send me the pineapple. Hey, at least we didn’t get the “nipple” pin. Seriously, that’s a heck of a mistake! LOL

Reply ButtonReply

Avanders

I’d be happy to swap… ?

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

Contact customer service. I had a similar situation (also got a UO pin) and they said they would send it to me. Not sure if they will send the pineapple, but I am definitely get something. It’s worth a shot! Scroll down in the comments also and you will see that you aren’t the only one! What a bizarre mix up.

Reply ButtonReply

Brittany

Easily the most disappointing PSMH I’ve ever received. I don’t know if I can even gift any of the items. I hope they swap well!

Reply ButtonReply

Steffy

I love the swan drink holder, then again I have a pool so I could actually use it. I may and see if I can swap for it, except I don’t have a lot to swap just yet. Glad I didn’t get this one after much debate, but have to agree that your review really amps up an otherwise ‘meh’ box! 🙂

Gallogator

Nice review, I still think this is a box of misses for me. I live in Florida and have short hair so the scarf is a no go for me. Hard to consider when it’s 97 outside. The swan and the pineapple pin are not my style and I don’t have a pool. The napkins might be a good giveaway with a bottle of something.

Wow, I am glad that I didn’t renew after my six month subscription ran out!

I’m pretty new to the swap boards. Even with the great review, this box isn’t speaking to me. Is there an option to list the whole box to swap, or do items have to be listed individually?

Reply ButtonReply

Sue Pisani

I listed the whole box on swap site and someone took it on day 2 – woo hoo – very disappointed in these boxes in general

Reply ButtonReply

Trish

@Liz, you consistently give great, detailed, reviews. I just wanted to say that I found this review exceptional. Including the detailed instructions for one way to wear the scarf, the cute idea for the swan inflatable on land, etc. really brought something extra! The scarf tied as a headband looks so cute on you! It has me hoping that I can pull that look off. Thanks for all the time and work that you put into this site!

I, too, felt at first that is box was a miss for me, and I have loved ALL the Popsugar boxes in the last 6 months or so. Reading the review helped me see things a little better, though, so thanks for that! I’m probably a little older than most of these subscribers, so the pin and swan seem a little silly for me, but I will gift them.
Having said that, I do still think that Popsugar does a great job of sending a variety of products, things for the home, accessories, beauty items, paper products, and that fun treat (the chips are delish!). There are bound to be things we don’t love from time to time. I love receiving things I wouldn’t pick out for myself, and it helps me be a little silly or act a little young for my age!

Liz, I don’t comment too often but I must say that I completely agree with all the praise for you! You’ve already done an incredible job with this blog but this post knocks it out of the park. Like many said, you actually made me excited about this box! I still find the pin “mix-up” too strange, but I feel better about the rest of it now. Only you could pull this off! And thanks for the scarf tutorial – I tried it and am really excited about it now despite the “typical” pattern!

For some reason I thought that those cute clue glasses would be included with the swan. It’s my own fault for assuming that, but still such a downer. I like the idea of using it for picnics/outside drinks though.

The scarf annoys me because it’s such low quality– just a cheap strip of fabric. A headband is really the only thing it’s good for.

The napkins are cute though. I like that the highlighter has a smudger. And the chips were tasty.

I’m over 50 but when I saw the spoilers I renewed my subscription – I had been subscribed for a couple of years but had cancelled after May, planning on renewing to get a 6-month discount. I didn’t bother in June though – the box was just not very exciting. One of the things I like about PopSugar is that it makes me try things I might not otherwise get – whether it’s trendy apparel and jewelry that I might not know I could pull off or makeup and beauty products that I wouldn’t buy at full price. This box fits the bill – it’s fun and has things I wouldn’t think to try but still has a couple of things that I know will be useful (the scarf and brow highlighter) if the other items don’t work out. I LOVE the idea of using the swan at a picnic to hold drinks – that would have been great for 4th of July in the park. I had planned to give it to a cousin who has a lake house but I might just keep it for myself!

I also like how they managed to find items that we haven’t been getting swamped with. It has to be a challenge to keep the boxes from all looking the same.

Liz Cadman

I completely agree with you about how they sent a lot of products that aren’t overdone in subscription boxes. It must be a daunting challenge since they’ve been doing this since 2012! 🙂

Great review, Liz! ?? As for the pin, I use them for push pins on a corkboard. They work great! ?

Reply ButtonReply

AmyM

That’s brilliant!! Was going to to swap but now I’ll keep. Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

I have some of the cutest, different, original pushpins on my tack board. It really is a great idea. And fun

Liz Cadman

Ooo – I like that corkboard idea. Thanks for the tip! 🙂

Liz, you really know how to create magic reviews. This one felt a little targeted to a younger audience (younger than more boxes they put out in general) and you knew how to market it to the masses. Fab use of visuals and “tips” too! Kudos.

I always try to reserve judgement until your reviews…and you did it again!! Thanks for taking the time and thinking of all the fun ways we can use the stuff. You’re the best in the biz.

oh my!!! I love that pin and while looking at their site i see they are launching a sub!!!! So excited!!!

Great review of a box I honestly only wanted the hair SPF/ styler out of. You make it a very fun review by thinking outside the box! I’ll be searching the swap boards for the hair item, also if anyone doesn’t want their Bowie lightening bolt pin & can’t get a replacement, I’d love to have it, so pretty please let me know if you want to swap. (I’ll be posting loads more items to swap in the next few days and love giving lagniappe with every swap!)

As for ideas for the pin, my 16 year old wears them as an earring. Not what would do, but does look cute. I put pins on hats! I also sometimes use them to add a little extra when I tie a scarf to my handbag (hate brollies, so always have a hat or scarf in case of rain). They do look cute in bunches in a lapel, just make sure it’s not the side you would put a shoulder bag over- I’m a switched lefty & lost so many antique pins that way. Also used them to hold a sarong in place (more for decor) and to close a too low cut blouse, or change the look of a simple tee by ruching a bit, putting the pin in place et Voila! A cute v-neck change to an average tee. Did the same when a dress was too high cut and looked awful until I changed the neckline. Love how you used the scarf & the inclusion of a tutorial. So many ways to style that type of scarf, maybe next time try a modified turban style, especially if headed to pool or beach. Super easy & a cute change with some verve (which you can totally pull off- if you need help, happy to talk you through various ways to play!) I’m glad you’re getting less camera shy and showing your lovely creative self- keep it up, we love it! Much love ⚡️Jet

Pins are definitely the most fun piece of jewelry, and like you, I’ve been collecting them for years. But some of these uses to adjust necklines are fabulous! Thank you!

Liz, I love your reviews. It’s so helpful to see the products in action! I love the way you used the scarf as a head band, it looks great on you. Of course I think everything would look great on you! Popsugar should have you on their payroll, you just sold the box for them!

Thanks for modeling, Liz! It definitely helps make the reviews stellar, plus you look as gorgeous as usual! Thanks for the review 🙂

It never fails…a post with full PopSugar spoilers comes out, and everything seems uninspired. Then Liz does her review, and it looks so much better! Liz, you find the bright side and fun in everything!
