I also received a printout with information about this month’s featured bottle, The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask.
The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask (750 ml.)- $73.99 (on sale for $59.99)
I’m a big fan of The Macallan distillery, and The Macallan 12 Year Old is one of the few bottles of liquor that I like to keep stocked in my liquor cabinet. The Macallan 12 year old is aged in sherry casks, which produces creamy vanilla flavors. (So good!) This month’s selection from Pour More, The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask, is a new release from The Macallan that blends sherry cask-aged whisky with whisky that’s aged in American bourbon casks.
The aroma has notes of honey and fruitcake with a freshness that Pour More describes as “fresh grass clippings.”
In the glass, the flavor is superb. As I mentioned above, The Macallan’s 12 Year Old release is one of my favorites, and I think the Double Cask release is even better. It’s sweet, spicy, and nutty, and it still has that creamy vanilla flavor I love.
When compared to the original 12 year old release, I think the Double Cask has a more complex, multi-dimensional flavor. Also, the finish is wonderfully smooth. I typically like to drink my Scotch on the rocks, but I could easily sip the Double Cask straight up.
Verdict: I’m very pleased with this month’s featured Scotch! It’s delicious, and I can’t believe that PourMore has managed to send me something that bests one of my all-time favorites! I’m also thrilled to see supplemental materials inside this month’s shipment (this info was missing from my previous shipments). In terms of value, this bottle falls short of the subscription cost; however, it’s important to note that the first bottle I received from Pour More came in significantly over the subscription cost. Pour More addressed this issue in the comments section of a previous review. They said, “Some months we may find a rare or special whiskey that is less than the cost of the box and other months a bottle that is well above the cost of the box. We try to average this out over a six month period.” As long as it averages out over time, I’m okay with some of the shipments coming in a little under the subscription cost.
