Here’s the info card/monthly challenge the Story Box sent out for July. It’s all about helping children expand their vocabulary, even more than what books already do.
The Doghouse, Jan Thomas – value: $6.46 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)
This little book is fun – a mouse, pig, cow, and duck are all playing ball until the ball accidentally ends up in the scary doghouse. Each animal (except the mouse) each go into the doghouse to fetch the ball and don’t return. Of course, it turns out there’s nothing to be afraid of, as the dog is just having a dinner party with all the other animals! It’s really cute how there’s some drama and suspense. This book also makes good use of adjective and descriptive speech.
Here’s a peek at the artwork!
Where is the Green Sheep?, Mem Fox – value: $4.99
This book is an easy-to-read and descriptive story about sheep! There are few words on each page and a nice amount of white space in the art to make it easy to process and read. This book also comes in bi-lingual versions, which I think is great.
And here’s a peek at some pages and the art style! I have enjoyed reading this book to Gideon.
Verdict: I think The Story Box is an interesting children’s book subscription! I love that they have a speech-language pathologist select the books. I found the info card to be really helpful, too. I think it’s good to have a little more “intention” during reading time with Gideon with their different suggestions each month, and they also help break up the monotony of story time and lets me go into it with a new goal or challenge. As far as value goes, I got about $12 of books for $14.99 so it wasn’t great as far as savings, but I have really enjoyed these two books this month so I’m not too bummed. I also think there’s value in the curation and letting kids get excited about a new book and having new stories to rotate.
I’m looking forward to future boxes – hopefully the value can be just a bit more, and I’m of course looking forward to seeing what books they send!
