Wine Awesomeness is a monthly wine subscription that specializes in rare and unusual wines. They seek out “the coolest, craveworthiest wines” and send “vino you don't see everyday, but will want to drink everyday.”

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Inside

Wine Awesomeness offers 3 different subscription options: all red, all white (with a chance of rosé or bubbly), or a mix (with a chance of rosé or bubbly). I tend to prefer white wines in the summertime, so I signed up for the all white box.

This month’s theme is “The Wine Olympics.”

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-DrinkingGames

In addition to the usual information Wine Awesomeness sends every month, this month’s publication included some Olympic drinking games. (I’ll be honest, reading through these games gave me some major college flashbacks. I’m not sure if I should be proud or ashamed to admit that I’ve played both Drunk Jenga and Wine Pong before!)

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Sample1

I also received a chocolate sample, but it sadly wasn’t able to survive the summer heat.

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Sample2

Luckily, the provided breakfast bar sample fared much better.

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Camp

2015 Camp Chardonnay, Sonoma County- $18

This Chardonnay is a blend of 98% Chardonnay and 2% Viognier, and it’s fermented in stainless steel tanks. It’s bottled young to keep it refreshing, and it has a fruity creaminess and a touch of citrus. I do tend to prefer wines that are a bit more crisp, but this is a solid wine that would be delicious with food. (Wine Awesomeness suggests pairing it with Salmon Burgers with Sweet Pickle Relish.)

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Albarino

Senda Verde Albarino 2015

I just can’t get enough of Albariño lately! As someone who loves the crisp acidity of a good Sauvignon Blanc, I enjoy that Albariño has a lovely, mouth-watering bite. (I’m pleased to report that I’m slowly converting my “I only drink Sauvignon Blanc” friends into Albariño fans.) This one is delicious, with a tartness that reminds me of granny smith apples and a subtle floral taste. I would happily buy more of this wine!

WineAwesomeness-July-2016-Eger

Jeannette Eger Riesling 2014- $18

I used to sneer at Rieslings because I thought they were all super sweet and syrupy, but boy was I wrong. This one has a light sweetness that’s balanced by an interesting minerality and a solid dose of acidity. Wine Awesomeness references lime-aid and river rocks to describe the flavor, which is both amusing and totally on point. This bottle would be fantastic with spicy food, and it has me craving some Thai green curry!

Verdict: Wine Awesomeness did it again! This box was fantastic! All of the bottles I received were great, and I would happily buy more of the Riesling and the Albariño. I love that Wine Awesomeness seeks out rare and unusual wines and that they include a good amount of information about them in the provided booklet. It’s also wonderful that they send out a recipe pairing for every bottle— that’s a big plus in my book. The per bottle cost breaks down to $15 per bottle, and I’m impressed to see that (at least) two bottles in this box retail for more!

Do you pay 45$ + 22.50 shipping and handling each month? Or is the shipping generally included?

After the free trial it’s just $45 a month and that includes shipping – hope that helps! 🙂

Hmm… this looks like a good box and fair values! But that chocolate smudge… what r they thinking when they send chocolate in August?!
I might do a river-rock taste test next time I’m at the river so I know for sure what they mean. Of course, I will spit it out after.
