Included was a brochure with nutritional information for all the supplements VitaFive sells. Each box you get will have a combination of these. Check what you received by looking at the back panel of the brochure (middle of the first picture). (This should not come as a surprise to you since you select the pack you will be getting.)
Here’s a look at the packets you get in the box. You will receive 28 of them, but they are all identical so I didn’t show every single one. If you have multiple people in the household getting vitamins, you can easily tell the packets apart by whose name is on them. (These accidently ended up with Sara's name instead of mine, but Customer Service corrected the mistake for next month)
This is a review of the “sleep pack,” which contains two melatonin gummies and two multivitamin gummies. I am not sure why multivitamins are in the sleep pack (the site says “support body restoration while asleep” so I guess that’s it). But let’s talk about melatonin for a little bit.
Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland when it is dark, telling the body that it’s time for sleep now. As you get older, you produce less melatonin, so supplementing it can help you maintain normal circadian rhythms. Melatonin is safe to take for a few weeks or months, although the long-term effects of these supplements are not well-studied.
Anyway, here’s the thing about melatonin. It causes you to have more (and better) REM sleep. Which, for some people, means DREAMS. In my case, really weird, vivid dreams. So weird that my sleep was not necessarily restful, although I understand from poking around online that non-restful sleep is not typical.
As for the vitamins, they have a pleasant, fruity flavor, though they are not calorie-free. You can see the full nutrition information, including ingredients, in the brochure that comes with the pack. And, they are vegan/vegetarian, which is great, since most gummies are not.
Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the September Vitafive box because you can only buy these gummies directly from VitaFive. The sleep pack (what I reviewed here) is $24 per month, which works out to a little less than $1 per packet. I definitely appreciate that the vitamins are vegetarian, too.
Although I did not see added minerals in any of the packs I checked, you may not want to take a regular multivitamin with the sleep pack. There is already a multivitamin included here, and it has 80% of your daily vitamin A in retinyl palmitate form. You *can* overdose on this form of vitamin A (food and many other multis contain the beta carotene form instead, which your body converts as needed) since it is fat soluble. But, overall, Vitafive is a fun way to supplement your dietary intake of certain vitamins and may be useful in addressing or preventing some common health conditions, especially if you are willing to do some research on your own.
