Unique Vintage 1950s Style Black Rita Halter Flare Dress – Value $78
This is 59% cotton/35% polyamide/6% spandex and is listed as “dry clean only.” I’m OK with that because this will be a special occasion dress for me! I am sure this is meant to be worn with a petticoat but I don’t own one at the moment. (A quick Google search shows that they are not expensive so I will probably pick one up.)
I am guessing that not everyone receives the same dress since this one is only available in sizes XS through XL. There is a size chart on the membership sign-up page and it caused me a bit of consternation since my body type can best be described as “stick figure,” whereas the measurements on the site are for someone with more of an hourglass shape. I opted for an S so that the bust and hip areas were not too big and crossed my fingers about the waist, but it was actually pretty comfortable and the fit was great! I am not wearing any special vintage-era undergarments (I don’t believe in squeezing my internal organs!) and this worked pretty well with an average strapless bra. For this particular dress, due to the flare skirt style, the fit in the hip area is pretty forgiving. (S is my size from JustFab and Kohl’s and Stitch Fix in dresses, so I guess the sizing for this brand is fairly consistent, at least in my size range.)
Here’s a shot of the back:
And here it is with a shrug in case you’re not into the whole “bare arms” look:
Verdict: The dress I received from Unique Vintage Dress of the Month Club this month had a value of $78, which is definitely above the cost of the subscription. Plus, it was actual regularly-priced merchandise and not something from the clearance page. I might not have picked it for myself because I didn’t really think I would want to wear something backless (or black, which I tend to avoid so I don’t look like a Goth), but I’m glad I tried it, because it took me outside my comfort zone and I actually think it is pretty flattering! Plus since I lost 40 pounds this year, I have absolutely no nice clothes that fit, so this will fill a niche in my wardrobe and I know I won’t be wearing the same thing as everyone else at holiday parties.
What do you think of Unique Vintage Dress of the Month Club? Did you receive the same dress or a different one?
