BOXO boxes contain two different coffees from two different roasters that are based in the same city.
This month’s box features coffee from Columbus, Ohio!
This month’s box contained a holiday card from BOXO. How sweet!
Boston Stoker La Minita Del Sol (8 oz.) - Value $10.67
Boston Stoker has been in partnership with Hacienda La Minita, a producer based in the Terrazu region of Costa Rica, since 1981. They’ve been roasting the farm’s beans for over 30 years!
The Terrazu region is famous for the quality of its coffee, and these are some good looking beans! They were grown at an altitude of 4,200-5,900 ft. and fully washed.
Due to the above average acidity of this coffee, BOXO recommended brewing with paper filters, so I decided to use my Chemex. I found the coffee to be bright, sweet, and full of chocolatey, citrusy flavor. I gave my husband a cup (without telling him what it was), and he immediately perked up and said, “yum! What is this?” I really enjoyed it, too.
CrimsonCup Ethiopia Kossa Kebena (8 oz.) - Value $11
The second coffee featured this month is a coffee from Western Ethiopia that’s been roasted by Columbus’ CrimsonCup. CrimsonCup is a roaster with a mission— they created their own Friend2Farmer program to help support farmers, encourage long-term economic stability, and protect local endangered habitats.
This coffee received a 90+ rating from Coffee Review, and it’s currently a finalist in the 2017 Good Food Awards! (This is one decorated coffee!)
I brewed some of this coffee, and I’m pleased to report that I definitely think it’s worth the hype! The flavor is really complex, and BOXO picks out notes of peach, lime zest, almond, and cocoa nibs. After brewing this in my Chemex (and really enjoying it), I noticed that BOXO actually recommends using a metal filter, so I think I’ll try that next.
Verdict: I really like BOXO, and I think it’s a lot of fun to sample two coffees every month that have been roasted in the same city. Both of this month’s coffees were great! The total retail value of the items I received this month totals almost $22. Given that both coffees were delicious and shipping was included, I’m happy with that!
What do you think of this month’s BOXO? Are you familiar with either of the roasters featured in this month’s box?
