This month's box is all about gathering together for the holidays. The rustic vibe of this card really sets the scene for the homespun feel of the items in the box.
The back of the card lists out the items inside the box, plus some information about each piece or brand.
Roost Crate can be given as a gift, too. This would definitely be an unexpected, but a very thoughtful gift for foodies or fans of unique, local fare.
They do corporate gifts, too!
They encourage social sharing, too!
Collar City Candle in Cranberry Apple - Value $16.00
Collar City Candle is committed to creating small-batch candles made with natural materials, which I love. Of course, the first thing that drew me to this candle was its amazingly rich red and purple colors.
The fragrance isn't half bad, either! The cranberry apple scent is deliciously autumnal. It's rich and jammy and sweet.
This sizable candle will go great on my mantle. The fragrance is rich enough that it'd add a nice aroma to the air without my even having to light it for awhile.
The Hudson Standard Shrub in Apple Coriander Maple - Value $19.99
Have you ever had a shrub before? It's a syrup made from fruit, spices, and notably, vinegar.
The vinegar aspect adds a bit of tang to the fall flavors of this syrup. It might sound weird, but it's kind of delightful—it hits such disparate parts of your taste buds at once that it makes for a very unique, flavorful experience.
Best of all, you can do a lot with shrubs. Roost Crate includes this recipe booklet to help you on your discoveries.
I ended up trying a smidge in some tea, and I really liked the result. It added an extra kick of savory flavor.
Check out some of the neat treats you can make with this unique ingredient.
Udderly Smooth Hand Cream with Shea Butter - Value $1.53
Oh wow, do I love this hand cream! It's delightfully thick and deeply hydrating.
This cream was originally created for dairy cows—isn't that interesting? Now, it's become a popular formula with humans. This lotion made my hands feel super moisturized and left them feeling that way for longer than most lotions do. My typically dry winter hands are very grateful!
Apple Pie Spreadable Fruit by Healthy Gourmet Kitchen - Value $9.00
I'm not a huge pie person, but when I do have pie, I'm all in for apple. This concoction is kind of like a chunkier jam—it really is like the inside of an apple pie!
I put this fruit on a bit of whole grain bread. It was a great little breakfast treat. Sweet with a pinch of cinnamon spice.
I bet this would also be great on ice cream. Sort of an apple pie a la mode without the crust!
Lodgical Homestead Creations Autumn Turkey & Dumplings Soup Mix - Listed Value $7.00
I've seen little mixes like this at country stores along road trip routes, but I've never tried one myself. This bag was easy to turn into a hearty meal that I might start picking up more of these kinds of kits!
The only downside is that the recipe takes a long time to cook. I think, all told, I spent about 2 hours making this batch. Most of the work is just dumping the separate packets of ingredients into a giant pot, though, so in terms of skill needed, this recipe is easy peasy.
The most unexpectedly easy part was making the dumplings using the bottom flour packet in the bag. Maybe it's because I'm a pretty inexperienced chef, but I was delighted by how simple this process was and by how tasty the dumplings ended up being. The mix made a sizable batch of soup, too—enough to feed a family or last a few days in the fridge.
Saratoga Crackers in Everything - Listed Value $6.25
These crackers reminded me of crispy pita chips doused in tasty everything seasoning. They were easy to munch on by themselves, though I'm sure they'd be great with a dip or some cheese.
I also like how cute the packaging is. A few of the crackers came crumbled, but that imperfection made them feel a bit more authentic and homemade.
I'm a big fan of salty snacks, so I was happy to see these savory chips in the box! The list price is about a dollar more than where Saratoga Crackers typically price their products, though, which is curious.
Set of 4 Oh Sew Urban Coasters - Listed Value $12.00
These coasters aren't quite my style, but they remind me of the kind of seasonal decor my family would have out, so they were a welcome, heartwarming sight.
They're thick and sturdy, too! I might not have them around all year, but I think they'll add a bit of fall fun to my coffee table.
Here's another look at their quality stitching. I appreciate how nicely these are made!
There's a little card from the creators, too, in case you want to find some more decor to dress up your holiday table.
Verdict: I thought Roost Crate was really fun! I would've assumed this box would be a bit too rustic for my tastes, but actually, the items inside were a nice assortment of unique and traditionally charming. The value of the box was about $72.00, which is well above the $39.95 price. This box isn't just a good value—it's also just a very fun box full of plenty of useful goodies!
