This month's theme is... STUDIO GHIBLI!!! I am SO thrilled about this. I love the gorgeous films this studio creates, and I can't wait to explore the ways I can wear my fandom on my sleeve!
This two-sided card lists all the items in the box, as well as a few details about each piece.
Howl & Sophie Postcard by Mayu Matsumoto - Listed value $5.00
This postcard is so pretty! I love Howl's Moving Castle and the beautiful romance between Sophie and Howl. I like this minimalist design and the beautiful pastel colors Matsumoto used.
The back of the card has the typical postcard layout. The card comes in a plastic sleeve, too, which makes it feel a bit more special than something just thrown in the box. If you didn't use it as a postcard, you could definitely use it as a print in your home. $5.00 feels like a lot for a postcard, though! Maybe if it was presented as a print, with slightly more sophisticated paper, that'd seem fair. But I don't know if I've ever spent $5.00 on a postcard (even one as cute as this!).
Kiki & Jiji Cotton Tote Bag - Listed value $15.00
Tote bags are kind of my thing. I have oodles of them hanging off both door knobs of my bedroom—tote bags are probably the one thing I truly "collect". So I was SO happy to find this tote in the box, and wow, is it ever cute! I love that the print is metallic gold, too. It's just so cool!
Totoro Jewelry Pouch - Listed value $6.50
Now, let's check out the jewelry! All the pieces are delivered inside this little Totoro pouch. $6.50 feels like a lot for a drawstring canvas bag, but I do love the simple design. I'll have to find a handy way to put this pouch to use. Maybe for holding quarters for the laundromat, or toting small snacks like almonds to the office.
Jiji Pendant Necklace - Listed value $15.00
How cute is this little wooden pendant? This Kiki's Delivery Service-inspired item was handmade by Sekushi Box for this package. According to the info card, the wood is maple and hangs from a 20" nickel-free chain.
Not only is the design really unique, it's very comfortable to wear. The chain and the pendant are lightweight but make a big statement. And that statement is "I have great taste in movies. Also, I love cute cats."
No Face Bracelet - Listed value $8.50
Spirited Away is one of my favorite Miyazaki films. I love this teensy clay version of No Face, and I love the simple, almost bohemian style of this braided cord bracelet. You pull at the gold-beaded ends of the bracelet to tighten the accessory around your wrist.
The paint on No Face's face isn't perfectly crisp, but I don't mind. Again, this piece has sort of a boho charm to it, and the slight imperfections are a reminder that it's truly handmade.
Kodama Earrings - Value $9.00
These tree spirits, or Kodama, are one of my favorite characters from Princess Mononoke. In the movie, these little white spirits fade in and out of sight, so this ghostly translucent plastic is perfect. These earrings by FoxyFunk are about an inch long but very light. Adorable!
Chuu-Totoro & Chibi-Totoro Stud Earrings - Listed value $8.00
These glass dome earrings have a picture of Totoro's sidekicks in each copper setting.
This style of stud earring isn't my favorite, but I am a big My Neighbor Totoro fan, so I'm sure they will make their way into one of my ensembles!
Howl's Moving Castle Necklace - Listed value $12.00
This pendant has a similar glass dome style, which again, I'm like, meh... about. But I could see giving this bronze-plated necklace to a fellow Howl's Moving Castle fan!
Calcifer Lapel Pin - Listed Value $12.00
Enamel pins are super trendy right now, and I'm going to love adding this one to my backpack!
This Howl's Moving Castle character pin is one of just 150 that were made, so it doesn't just look unique—it is literally unique!
The pin didn't seem super secure on thicker fabric or layers (like the lapel of my faux leather moto jacket), but it holds nicely on thinner or single layers, like a shirt, a lighter jacket, or the pocket of a bag.
Sterling Silver Adjustable Totoro Ring - Listed Value $35.00
I love this Totoro ring, and how high quality it is. I didn't find it incredibly adjustable, but that's probably a good thing—it isn't flimsy or overly bendy like some adjustable rings can be. Did you see the tiny Totoro paw marks on the inside of the ring?
Arrietty Candle - Listed value $4.50
This exclusive from the Leaky Candle smells fresh and fruity, like a sugary sweet melon. Each box gets one of 4 versions of this candle—I'd love to hear what the other candles are like if you got a different one!
Verdict: I LOVED this Fangirl Monthly box! I'm such a fan of Studio Ghibli, and I'm really excited to start wearing these looks around—especially the ones by indie designers. Based on the prices the box listed, this month's package contains over $130.00 worth of value. I noted where I think those prices are a little high. And while $100.00 might be way higher than I'd have expected, there's no doubt that this box is well worth the $45.00 price tag.
