Every month has a different theme, and January's theme was Origins. It featured s0me classic franchises - TMNT, Mario, Superman, and Captain America!

Loot-crate-january-2017-0005

Loot Crate's boxes typically invert into something fun and/or usable. This month's box turns into something extremely usable!

Personally, I really love this reuse of the box for your comic collection, and I'd like to see this more often!

Each month comes with a mini magazine that describes and details all of the items in your crate.

Each month always includes an exclusive pin as well. This month featured a personal favorite - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Loot-crate-january-2017-0015

Loot Crate's pin always unlocks digital bonus content as well, and this month might be the best yet. You'll get issues #1-5 of the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics on Comixology. This is one of my favorite current comic runs - so treat yourself and enjoy!

Original "Jumpman" Shirt - Value $15?

This month's exclusive shirt features Mario in his initial form - Jumpman from Donkey Kong. As someone who grew up in the Nintendo and Sega gaming evolution - this is a great shirt.

Captain America Golden Age Shield Replica - Value $15?

This month included a metal replica Captain America shield.

Loot-crate-january-2017-0024

It comes with a clear stand for display - it's also totally removable from the stand if you wish to display it another way.

This prop replica was taken from Captain America: The first Avenger - with the certificate to boot.

It fit perfectly with my Cap statue!

TMNT Tiki Mini Mug - Value $5-10?

You'd receive 1 of 5 possible mini tiki mugs - Raf, Leo, Mikey, Donny, or The Shredder!

Loot-crate-january-2017-0018

Here's a look at all 5 variants!

Loot-crate-january-2017-0020

As you can tell, I got Raf. They're not lying when they call this a mini mug. It's tiny. I think it's about the size of an espresso shot, if that. I'm not really sure how to re-purpose this - any ideas?

Action Comics #1 Reprint - Value $5?

You don't get much more of an 'Origin' than Action Comis #1 from DC Comics.

Loot-crate-january-2017-0032

Loot-crate-january-2017-0033

This is a reprint of that issue, and it's stayed pretty true to that era - from the feel of the pages to the ads.

Loot-crate-january-2017-0035

It also comes with a certificate of authenticity for this exclusive comic.

Verdict: My values come to around $45 without the digital loot included. Even with the increased cost, that is still a good value for the box from a pure numbers perspective. Personally, I'm really loving adding the shield to my collection and sporting this new Mario shirt - so the value is there before I even got to the other items. Like most geek boxes, the value is going to be up to you - whether you love the included franchises and type of items or not.

Valuing that Action Comics #1 reprint at $5 is a pretty big lowball, seeing as how they’re reselling from $35-$55 dollars now

a tiny air plant might make his hair look amazing.

I loved this box!! One of my favorites! I especially loved the shirt and shield! I might use the mug as a toothpick or cotton swab holder as well.

as fun as the little mug is, i’m at a loss with it, too. i got michelangelo and he’s a little bigger than a shot glass, but i have enough of those. too small to hold more than a couple pens. even q-tips i have a bigger cup that i use. for now, he’s just my little desk buddy, watching me work. maybe some day i’ll run short on shot glasses and grab him.

We got a mini mug in another box in the past and we use it for a pencil/pen holder. You could also use it for a tiny bud vase. 🙂

As someone who just started growing plants at her desk, you could put a little dirt in there and grow something! Or do a succulent (I kill those, so good luck lol).

Laura

I was thinking the same thing. Tiny circular green cactus!

Eric

This might work – it’d have to be a tiny succulent, but they do have small ones – good idea!

The mini mug is too cute! Would it work as a toothpick holder?

Eric

I think son and that was my initial thought also – but, it might be a bit to tall for toothpicks, though. I’ll have to look and see if we have any around.

I was thinking a toothpick holder as well… or depending on what your bathroom looks like, it could also hold q-tips
