Every month, Target launches a beauty box, and it sells out very quickly. This month, they released two boxes, a $5 and $10 box. This is the review of the SOLD OUT $5 Box.

(The $10 box is still available - check out my review of the $10 Target January 2017 Beauty Box to see everything included!)

Now, onto the items!

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0008

Colgate Enamel Health Whitening Toothpaste - FULL SIZE! Value $3

I love getting toothpaste in subscription boxes (and thus, never having to buy it), and I'm impressed that we got a full-size toothpaste in this box! It's a super minty gel/paste formula designed to help with enamel and replenishing calcium while also making your teeth whiter. After trying it out a few times, I can say that I like the flavor and my teeth felt super clean after using it - so far so good!

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0012

Mane ’n Tail Shampoo - 2 oz Value $.40

I feel like this is one of those beauty products that has been around forever and has a big following! I keep going back and forth on whether or not to use products with sulfates on my color treated hair, so I'm donating this one (it is made with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), but if you've sampled this and recommend it, let us know!

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0011

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner - 2 oz Value $3

This might be my favorite item in the box! I LOVE the vanilla scent, and it's a light conditioner, so it didn't weigh down my hair - but it definitely made it softer. (And you can use it on wet or dry hair!)

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0009

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Body Lotion - 50 ml Value $.90

Admittedly, this is one of those products I've seen in drugstores but never bothered to look at closely. I had no idea that this lotion is free of parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, gluten, sulfates, and dyes! It has a sweet, coconut scent, and the lotion absorbs somewhat quickly (it feels a little oily at first), and definitely leaves your skin moisturized!

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0013

Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls - 1 oz Value $2.75

I've sampled this product before and it works pretty well for my hair. (I have naturally wavy hair with some curl.) It gave me slightly more defined curls, but I think I probably need to try it with scrunching my hair more and maybe drying it with a diffuser. Let me know if you have any curly hair tips!

(FYI - this product contain parabens.)

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0014

Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes - 7 wipes Value $1.40

Another staple I'm ALWAYS happy to receive in a subscription box! I've sampled these wipes many times before, and they are great! No fragrance added, gentle on my skin, and works on waterproof eye makeup - all good things!

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0016

Vaseline Intensive Cocoa Radiant Lotion - 1 oz Value $.30

This lotion is much lighter than I was expecting! And it absorbed almost instantly! It gave my skin a bit of a health sheen, too.

(FYI - this product contain parabens.)

target-beauty-box-v2-january-2017-0015

SheaMoisture Peace Rose Oil Complex Shampoo - 15 ml Value $.40

SheaMoisture Peace Rose Oil Complex Conditioner - 30 ml Value $.90

While I normally don't love getting foil packet samples, these are good for one full use, and I love the SheaMoisture brand, so this sample is a welcome addition to the box! (Plus I still keep reminding myself, this is a 5 DOLLAR BOX!)

If you aren't familiar with SheaMoisture, they are one of my favorite inexpensive ingredient-conscious brands. This shampoo and conditioner set isn't overly rosy, and the conditioner is double the size of the shampoo sample (both things I appreciate!).

Verdict: This box has a value of about $13. I think that's a good value for a $5 beauty box, especially considering that it also came with a $3 beauty coupon! (I really hope Target does more $5 boxes in the future - it's such a great value!)

I wish you’d bring back the product specific email reminder, specifically for the Target Beauty Box. The daily emails are a little much to wade through and I missed getting the box for February! 🙁
I love your site! Thanks for keeping us informed.

Hi Kelly! We still send out emails for specific boxes (and you can specify if you only want emails about coupons/spoilers/news, etc.)

At the bottom of this review, there’s a section to set up email alerts for Target Beauty Box. Hope that helps!

Thank you!

Unfortunately when I opened my box, I found that the Shea Moisture shampoo had a little tear in it and leaked into the box. I’ll have to contact customer service about that. I liked all the other things in the box, though!

I got the 12 Days of Beauty calendar and the $5.00 box and I am really happy with 90% of all I got. I love the Shea shampoo & conditioner and it was my 1st time trying this line. I even have enough left for one more hair wash but may have to add just a bit of another product and I have long hair. (In fairness I did wash my hair 1st w/another product because I hadn’t washed my hair for a week when I was sick & then used the Shea) When I saw the $5.00 box considering the box itself is reusable to store things in I was really surprised at the quality of that to begin with. Carol’s Daughter has such high quality products and I have used the Mane and Tame before and love that shampoo also. I can use everything and the 12 Days of Beauty blew me away also. Really happy.

Is the Target box a subscription box or do you have to buy it every month?

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

You buy them every month. They tend to sell out quickly. Prices vary, too. If you sign up for MSA’s updates you will get an email when they launch.

Christy

Did anyone else notice that the coupon expires the day before the February box will be released? I think after the December coupon fiasco, this will be the norm now.

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

Yeah they seem to be doing that lately.

I have been using Miss Jessie’a Quick Curls for about a year. I use it when I’m not pulling my hair back or blow drying it straight, so probably 75% of the time. I have shoulder length fine but wavy hair. I love Quick Curls because it doesn’t weigh my hair down, and it doesn’t make it crunchy.

I use it on towel-dried hair. I flip my head over and apply, then flip upright and get the places I likely missed on the first pass. It doesn’t really have hold but keeps it from getting frizzy during the day or in humidity. If I use a little too much, I just flip my head and tousle it a bit. If I use too little, I can tell where I missed because it frizzes.

All in all a good product that lasts a decent amount of time. I like that you can get it at Target now that I’m done shopping at Birchbox (due to points), so I can use my $3 coupons or any gift cards.

Was excited to try the Shea Moisture and Miss Jessie but I’m having an allergic reaction and those are the only 2 things I’ve done differently lately. As the Shea Moisture seems to have more esoteric ingredients I’m thinking that is the more likely culprit. Anyone ever had a reaction to either?

So happy I bought this box! I will use everything. Now for the Walmart box… I’m very disappointed in their beauty box this month. So much, that I’m thinking about canceling…

I just got my box today and had been trying to track it and the whole time it said it was still in IL even as of this morning. Great box, I use Mane & Tail shampoo. I have for years and I’m a hairdresser. The lotion will be great for work at my desk and my nephew took my toothpaste. He’s 18 and was excited to go through the box, next time they have a men’s I will get him one.

I got the $10.00 box on Monday – love it. The 12 Days of Beauty calendar Tuesday- love it also and the $5.00 box yesterday. Love the Palmer’s coco oil lotion. They make it in a stick form that I use on my elbows all the time. After all these years first time using mane n tail. Gotta say I like it too.

Patiently waiting for Feb. to roll around.

I loved this box as well, For $5 you can’t beat it. I agree on all of your reviews. I have not tried the shampoos as yet. Used the curl stuff today and well it work OK, no frizz like some, but didn’t really hold my hair. Loved the leave in conditioner. Having body lotions is great, and the toothpaste a big plus. Target is running a sale on beauty items spend $15 and get a $5 gift card, so if you use your $3 coupon with that – nice 🙂

Wondering why I still haven’t received my boxes. I ordered both the $5 and $10 and used my Red Card. Said delivery next week over 2 weeks after it was ordered. Come on Target…..likely going to skip this one from here on out.

Sammiejo

My boxes haven’t arrived yet either. (I bought both boxes.) My tracking number had a delivery date set for the 9th.

Reply ButtonReply

Jazz

I ordered 2 weeks ago as well and received my box today…4 days before the anticipated arrival date. So, you may want to check your account for the actual arrival date. Expedited shipping means higher sample box costs and no one wants that! It takes even longer to get an Ipsy or Sephora box. This is still a win for most of us.

I’m very pleased with this box. I’m most excited about Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner and the lotions. I was interested in the Quick Curls until I found out it has silicone in it. I try to avoid using silicone in my curly hair as much as possible.

Wish I got this one before it sold one. I LOVE foils for traveling! Great way to get a bunch of products into my carry one!! And I take mini binder clips with me in case I have multiple destinations or any leftover product to take home 🙂 The Palmers Body Butter is my holy grail lotion, esp in the winter!! Just as good (maybe better) than the Body Shop ones but at a fraction of the cost!

I’m still waiting for mine. On Monday it was at the post office an hour away from me. Then, as of this morning it’s 700 miles away in another state. Go figure!

Reply ButtonReply

Traci

I did Chat with customer service this morning because I haven’t gotten my boxes either. It should be here “soon” whatever that means but they did give me a $5 eCard so you might want to go on site, Chat with your complaint and maybe get $5

Reply ButtonReply

Dinah

Thank you, I will do that today. I just checked again right now and the taking still says it’s in that other state. That’s just crazy!!!

Nan

I STILL don’t have mine either. I emailed them and they said they would issue a refund, however they took away my $3 coupon value and my $.75 discount ($.25 for this box and $.50 for my $10 box I ordered at the same time!) for using a gift card to pay, so they sent me an egift card for $1.87! All-in-all, now I have no $5 box, I’m out an extra $.50 and I don’t even have my $3 coupon to use at my local Target. Grrrrr… I’m getting pretty annoyed lol.

shakira

This is a great box and I was so surprised to get full sized tooth paste! I love the Target boxes because I can get a ton of travel sized stuff for cheap. This was a great box. Kept everything!

Danielle

I absolutely loved this box ! As soon as I opened it I went on target to see if I could get another ! Sold out though . This is one of my favorite target boxes for the last three or four months

Svetlana

Great box. Will use every single product.

Great box, worth the $5. The lotions are perfect for travel or carrying in a purse. The toothpaste will be used. The shampoos and conditioner too. The Simple wipes are a great product, the smaller pack is also good for travel.

Reply ButtonReply

Constance

Argh, I wish they would re-stock this again. Why is there an abundant supply of the $10 box but not the $5?!

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

$5 is cheaper, so more people are buying?

Reply ButtonReply

Steph M

Compared to the Walmart $5 box, this was so much better!

Reply ButtonReply

Beth L

So worth 5 dollars for sure. I swear though for at least the last 5 to 6 boxes I stopped getting excited about Target Boxes. I use to stock Target and MSA to make sure I got one but that feeling has long passed. Its probably because I have a boat load of beauty samples and the other reason being alot of the same brand every box or just not super new and fun brands and products to TRY before I DIE samples…😊. Anyway these boxes are always worth every penny and most sample are used but not exciting to me. I hope everyone that did buy are loving your boxes… Woohoo

Reply ButtonReply

KathyB

LOVED THIS BOX! So glad I got 2. I have naturally curly hair and so many hair products that come in these boxes don’t work for me. Happy to have some that do! It’s nice to try samples of Miss Jessie’s and Carol’s Daughter before committing to full size, since they are a little pricey. I’ll have to gift the Mane & Tail, but so happy with the rest of the box for $5!

Reply ButtonReply

Christen

In your summary, you note that it’s a good value for a $15 box 🙂

I liked this box better than the $10 box to be honest, even though my hair is stick straight. I’ll donate/swap the items for curly hair, but overall, I’m happy with it!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Whoops! Thanks for letting me know – I’ll fix that 🙂 And I agree, I think I liked this one more than the $10 box, too!
