Thanks, Jennifer, for letting us know that Powell’s Indiespensable book subscriptions are increasing their pricing. This subscription was $39.95 and ships every 6 weeks.

Dear valued Indiespensable subscriber,

As the curators of Indiespensable, we place the highest importance on offering unique, collectible books along with additional value that exceeds the amount we charge per installment.

Since we launched the program in 2008, we have maintained our commitment to these high standards. Unfortunately, the cost of books, slipcases, and shipping has climbed significantly. We must regrettably recover some of those cost increases in order to continue providing the same value and quality you expect from the Indiespensable program.

Effective with Volume 66, Borne by Jeff VanderMeer, our new volume price will be $44.95.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Indiespensable. We hope to bring you many more wonderful volumes in the future.

Sincerely,

The Indiespensable team

I just went on the Powells website to see when the book would be shipped out and the subscription is currently OPEN if anybody wants to snag a box!

Seems fair for sure, costs just keep going up for all items and services. Makes sense that their price would have to reflect that

Better to be honest and upfront instead of going under due to lack of funds!

Totally agree! It is so much better for companies to just be upfront and direct. Subscribers are understanding and sympathetic, as long as they don’t try to make excuses or talk down to people regarding changes. That was why we had the Birchbox fiasco and such. I totally understand things getting more expensive and changes have to be made for them to stay afloat. A $5 increase is reasonable but I can understand it still might be the tipping point for some subscribers to cancel.

I’m game. I really REALLY want that book regardless but since it’s going to be in the box I’m paying the increase. Though I do hope they start adding some more stuff to the box. One book for that price…I’ll have to really want to read their picks to keep the sub! I mean, some Powell’s swag would be perfectly fine by me, if they want to save costs.
