Now onto the items!

Benefit Double the Lip in Lusty Rose - .75 g Value $6.67

This is a great sized sample! (1/3 the size of the full-size version.) And unlike the Benefit liner sample that was tricky to use (you had to squeeze it), this one actually clicks to push up the lipstick just like the full-size product.

Birchbox-April-2017-0007

This product is designed to give you a lipstick + liner in one. It's an interesting concept, and I was excited to try it. (I was also worried the different shades would contrast too much.)

But, I lucked out, the two shades look excellent together, and aren't that different either. Here is the lipstick/lipliner swatched:

Birchbox-April-2017-0016

The formula is super creamy, and it has a satin-matte finish. I love this shade, too!

Birchbox-April-2017-0009

Tocca Emelia - 1.5 ml Value $2.85

Birchbox-April-2017-0008

This perfume is a spray applicator vial. It has notes of clementine, loquat fruit, geranium coeur, magnolia tree leaf, and kadota fig.

I'm not a big fan of the scent, but I'm not much of a perfume wearer at all.

Birchbox-April-2017-0010

Vasanti BrightenUp! Amplifying Moisturizer - .2 oz Value $3.35

Birchbox-April-2017-0011

I love Vasanti's Brighten Up exfoliator, so I was excited to try this! It's hydrating, absorbs quickly, and left a smooth, matte finish. I really like this as my pre-makeup moisturizer! (I just wish it wasn't fragranced!)

Birchbox-April-2017-0012

Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It - .5 oz Value $3.10

Birchbox-April-2017-0013

This hair styling cream is made for fine to medium hair. My hair falls into the medium category and I liked this product. It added softness and helped tame frizz without adding any weight. And it made my hair smell fab, too!

Birchbox-April-2017-0014

Derma e Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask - .5 oz Value $5.75

(Good to know for swaps - this product has an inner foil seal.)

Birchbox-April-2017-0015

I love a double duty mask! This creamy charcoal clay mask takes only 5 minutes to help detoxify your skin and clean pores, and it has a built-in exfoliant of apricot seed powder, too. (No discernable scent, either!)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $22 - that's good for a $10 beauty box. In most cases, the curated box has a good value, so I recommend always picking it if that's a priority for you. (This month the value seems lower because there was a perfume sample in the curated box.) I really wanted to try the new Benefit lip product, and the Vasanti moisturizer, though, so I'm ok with the lower value. And the Derma E mask was a great surprise discovery!

I’m a Beta. Very disappointed in my plan box that was sent. The April box ( actual box it self) is lovely and those of us that pay more get a plan box, I don’t get that. I love BB, but I gotta tell ya, being a Beta seems to be a down grade NOT an upgrade. Beta box #1 for me was a total bust! 👎👎

I’m beta too but my box wasn’t plain it was the same box everybody got. Except for I got travel size products and full size critiqued exactly to my profile. I did the pick a category you want and one you don’t want. I’m very impressed with the beta they should have done this along time ago I would have done it! I loved my box way better than normal that’s for sure. Maybe try that pick one leave one out. I thought it was for sure worth it.

I’m finally done with Birchbox after 2.5 years, yay! After they gutted their points system last july, I stuck it out for the remainder of my annual sub, thinking I’d re-up if and only if their boxes got better. They didn’t. Boring, repetitive and uninspired. I don’t know how this box can have a 3.9 overall rating from the MSA community? Y’all are being generous! It used to be a very good box, but not anymore.

Goodbye, Birchbox! Thanks for having great customer service, at least. 🙂

Mary,
I couldn’t agree with you more.
My profile sounds like yours yet I received the same box as yours.
So many times other boxes do the same. Believe me I’m not asking that every product be as matched but when they add up it’s not good.
The problem I have with these boxes is why do I make a profile yet receive products that don’t match what’s asked of me.
Yes, I rate the products to help these companies make better choices for me but I think it’s crazy that I’m asked to do more work to receive what’s on my profile.
I love the idea of this and it’s such a great way to try new products and have discovered products I absolutely love.
I don’t think I’m asking to much from these companies considering how much money they make.

I missed the window to pick the curated box as well, so my box was a surprise this month, but in a bad way. I have fine, thin, color treated hair…and 3 of the 4 samples in my box were hair products for coarse hair!!! And one perfume sample which also never fails to be an overly floral scent which I can’t stand. I called and asked how can I receive such a miss given my profile selections??? The Birchbox rep asked whether I reviewed the products I receive because that is factored into the samples we receive. I have honestly not reviewed anything from them since the point system for monthly boxes stopped. Just thought I would share as it might be worth it to review the items you don’t like to see if that helps!

@ChristineD—-
What number did you call? I emailed about my missing item but no response yet, other than the canned one saying they are backlogged on responding.

@Stephanie…you know what, I am having a brain fart. I actually did online chat this afternoon under the contact section of their website. They responded immediately and sent me the curated box as a bonus for their being such a miss from my profile. Give that a try!! Good Luck!

Bonnie

I’m actually really happy with this month’s BB. I liked all the sample choices, but I selected one that I think I liked the best. But I’m getting all three in my box! It’s like they knew these were all winners for me. (I think everyone is getting that Benefit lipstick).

I am interested in getting this but very hesitant..

I forgot to choose the curated box and therefore got a mystery box. Which was awful. It seemed super skimpy to me with 4 products. Today I realized they left out one of the products, but even if they’d sent it, I won’t use any of the products in this box. What a letdown after last month’s. But I guess it is my fault for forgetting to choose the curated box. 🙁

My box was AMAZING!💕 Best box I have gotten and heaviest… 🙂

Kimberly

Guys if you have the option to upgrade it is so worth it. I have two accts and both are upgraded and I got deluxe size/travel size products and they both where critiqued exactly to my profile and what I opted my want category and don’t want category.

Dena

Are you a Beta. I’m a Beta and opted for the oily skin box. I’m pretty excited to get my box.

Reply ButtonReply

Kimberly

Yes beta! I did the want this and leave this out. The curated boxes was far better than normal sub too. All my samples was travel size and some full. It is def better and completely worth the upgrade.

Natalie

What do you mean upgrade??

Jess

I too have fine oily hair but I’m ok with having some sample travel sizes of things for after I dye my hair. I was happy to receive 2 bonus items this month and I will end up using everything. The last 2 months I had gifted items to coworker and friends.

My perfume was in a vial and not a spray. I really like everything in this box so far. One of my favs!

I went with mystery box this month, and of course Birchbox stuck in the box product that I cannot stand – dry shampoo.

Reply ButtonReply

Bonnie

Too funny. I get a lot of different subs, and if all of them did a dry shampoo twice a year, which I think they do more than that, I would have over 50 dry shampoos every year! I DO use it, but not enough to go through 50 a year! I use it once or twice a week, to get that one last day before I have to wash my thick, heavy dry hair.

Reply ButtonReply

Geena

Could be worse – I have fine hair and got shampoo, conditioner and a smoothing balm for thick course hair this month as samples. Also a fragrance sample.

Reply ButtonReply

Brandi

This keeps happening to me too. They justified it by listing the ingredients and I told them yet again that I’m still allergic to olive oil, just as I have the last three months when I got products for coarse hair containing it. My fine hair and allergies hate Birchbox.

Rachel

Me too! and I emailed them about it and they said that I had to choose more options regarding my hair in order so they could find tune it. I had listed that I had fine hair.

Aaron

Me too! So sad 🙁

AAC

I love dry shampoo! If you schedule a call with their consultant, they can tell you what to select/not select on your “concerns” profile to not get as many dry shampoos.

Svetlana7e

I updated my profile and clearly stated no dry shampoos. Fortunately, I know very generous MSA member from Florida who would appreciate this product. She is my dry shampoo lady, all my dry shampoo samples goes to her.
