Comic Block has themes now, this month's theme was 'Comic Cache' - we also knew it included 7 comics, a trade paperback, a print and wearable!
Like all Nerd Block deliveries, you'll receive a booklet. Inside you'll find stories, interviews, and all the details about the items in the box.
Deadpool Shirt - Value $15?
This month's exclusive shirt features Deadpool display Maximum Effort! Perfect.
Jean & Scott #1 - Value $3.99?
Max Wittert started a web comic about the mundane daily romantic struggles of Jean Grey and Scott Summers - Nerd Block brings us an exclusive paperback edition!
I like this little sideways look at superhero life - it's short, but an interesting read.
North #1 - Value $3.99?
North was created by Scott Swayer and brought to life via Kickstarter.
It follows a group of Canadian superheros that awaken a dormant monster! I love the exclusive cover art of this issue!
The Sovereigns #0 - Value $3.99
This opening issue of a new storyline brings together 4 lines - Turok, Magnus, Solar, and Doctor Spektor.
These are 4 quick read mini-issues that surface around a bigger story. Dynamite comics typically aren't my favorite, but I like the major plot line here.
From Amazon:
The beginning of an epic tale that will change everything you know about some of comicdom’s greatest and longest-tenured heroes! Solar, Magnus, Dr. Spektor & Turok! Apart, they’ve saved countless lives a hundred times over. Together, they form a team that has protected the world in the past, present and future. Now, they will be reunited one last time to face a threat that will forever change their legacy and bring them face to face with their final destiny!
Knight Guardians of Relativity #1 - Value $3.99 + Exclusive Variant Cover
This story revolves around The Fourth Great War and follows The Knight Guardians.
More about this story:
Recovering from the ravages of the Fourth Great War, a mysterious band of men and women called the Knight Guardians are dispatched to humanity's six remaining City States to investigate the murder of their revered brother knight, and to protect the last remaining Relativity Machine from those seeking to harness the power of temporal travel and achieve immortality.
Riverdale #1 - Value $3.99 + Exclusive Variant Cover
This comic follows the Archie Comics, but meshes it with the CW tv series Riverdale.
More about this comic:
From Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and the writers of the new CW series Riverdale comes the first issue of the MUST-READ, brand new, ongoing comic series. Set in the universe of the TV series, the Riverdale comic offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, Josie & the Pussycats and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade.
LARP! Trade Paperback - Value $8 on Amazon
You'll get volume one of LARP!
This almost feels like a teen highschool drama movie, but in a good way - hiding his LARPing identity because he's part of the cool crowd.
Here's more about it:
Lifelong nerd Pete Ford's been living two lives since starting at his new school--in one, he's a member of the cool crowd and the tennis team, and in the other he is Lord Blackmane, scourge of the Southern moors. It's probably best if the cool kids don't find out about that, but hiding Pete's live action roleplaying gets harder when he falls for a teammate. Can Pete have it all, or will his separate lives collide, threatening all his friendships? And what of the shady other club trying to horn in on the LARPers' game space?
You'd receive 2 of 4 possible comics from the next group - here are the two comics I pulled:
Neverland #1 - Value $3.99
This is like the show Once Upon A Time which takes fairytale characters and brings them into real-life settings. The story revolves around Peter Pan.
It's really dark and gritty, unlike the show mentioned above - definite parental advisory here!
Here's a bit more about it:
NVRLND is a dark and magical retelling of Peter Pan set in the present-day landscape of Hollywood. Wallflower turned wild-child Wendy Darling befriends the fierce Tiger Lily and falls into the music rave scene of the underground club NVRLND. Intoxicated by the music, Wendy falls for the enigmatic Peter, lead singer of the band The Lost Boys. Peter is everything a girl could desire: handsome, daring, and reckless. Wendy discoveres Peter is mixed up with the mysterious tattoo artist James Hook, who preys upon the young who flock to Peter, 'hooking' them on the new designer drug, Pixie Dust. You think you may know the truth about NVRLND, but the truth is, you know nothing. NVRLND is a story for anyone who never wants to give up, but may not live long enough to have a chance.
Red Dog #1 - Value $3.99
I actually reviewed this issue and cover in the December 2016 Blindbox Comics shipment.
If you're a fna of the novel Red Rising, I think this is going to be your favorite of the month!
Here's more about it:
(W) Rob Cohen, Andi Ewington (A) Robert Atkins (CA) W. Scott Forbes Some say there’s no greater love in the universe than the love a boy has for his dog. For Kyle, the only kid living amongst 200 grownups on a distant mining colony light-years away from Earth, that saying is a given. Welcome to Kirawan, a planet that Kyle calls, ‘the worst place you could ever imagine.’ Kyle stumbles through his days doing his chores hoping to live up to the steep demands of his father, the head of the planet’s mining operation. Still, it’s not all bad, there’s Q, Kyle’s robotic K-9, basically the greatest pet in the known universe. However, during an upload of resources bound for earth, the alien natives of Kirawan launch a full scale attack on the human miners. Welcome to the world of Red Dog, the new groundbreaking adventure series from the screenwriter of Fast and the Furious and XXX.
Jean Print - Value $10?
Finally, you'll receive a print from Max Wittert to go along with the issue of Jean and Scott!
The Verdict
They weren't kidding - what a comic cache this month to go along with Free Comic Book Day! It's fun to read lesser known comics, so I enjoyed it - but I was hoping for at least one bigger title - seeing as that's more typical, I'm not too down that they were all small batch comics. Overall, I had a blast with this month's Comic Block!
