This month's project is making slippers! The skill focus is felt design. My nine-year-old does the projects. He's on the young side for this subscription, but he does just fine with it. He was so excited about the project because he wanted to make a really nice thank-you present for his teacher this year! This is the booklet that came in our box this month.
Here's a peek inside the booklet at the instructions. They were clear and well illustrated, so they were easy for my son to follow. The booklet also always contains good tips and suggestions for practicing.
These are all the supplies that were included for this month's project. Everything we needed was included except tape.
His first step was to cut out all the felt shapes for the soles and uppers.
He had to follow a dot pattern and make the pattern around all the shapes as a guide for sewing later.
Using the same guide, he had to poke holes through the foam soles to make it easier to sew through them.
His next step was to decorate the uppers with sticky felt shapes. He made monsters! So fun!
Then he had to align all the pieces and clip them together.
His last step was to sew through all the dots on the pieces he made and voila! Monster felt slippers! I think they turned out really cute, and I know his super awesome third-grade teacher is going to just love them! I had to help him a bit with the sewing, but as I've said before, he is on the young side for this subscription.
Verdict: Doodle Crate is SO awesome! What a fun project this month, and I just know the slippers are going to be a big hit! My only very small issue this month was that the instructions had him put dots on both sides of everything, but when it came down to the sewing, he really only needed one set of dots on the tops of the uppers and visible part of the insoles. Otherwise, it was really fun! I still can't believe what Doodle Crate can provide for $20. When you consider the materials, the curation, the project selection, and instructions, that's really a bargain! Most importantly, it always sets the stage for some fun times crafting with my son.
